Subject: Where are your ancestors from?
Written By: violet_shy on 11/22/20 at 1:54 pm
Ok this is a bit random lol! But interesting.
We all know the most up to date and accurate DNA testing is done at Ancestry. I have recently submitted my test, and I received the results yesterday. These are all of the places where my ancestors are from in percentages. Just thought I'd share it with everyone! :)
I was searching to see who else is from Portugal. There aren't many Portugese American artists the only one that comes to mind is Glenn Medeiros, but he was from way back in the '80s.
Here are my ethnicities in percentages:

England.
My husband has been tracing our family tree and traced my dads family back to 1650. For many generations they lived in a small village in the smallest county in England

I did 23andme a few years ago. According to them, I am 100% European. Broken down:
Ashkenazi Jewish 50% (my father's side)
Northwestern European 50% (my mother's side)
-British & Irish 47.7%
-French & German 2.3%
They didn't break it down between my father or my mother's side but to me, it was obvious since my dad was Jewish. My dad's mother's family came from Russia/Poland. They lived in the last village (which is in Ukraine today) that was on the underground railroad as Jews were escaping tsarists Russia. There is a story of my great, great grandfather and his brother-in-law swam an icy river as guards and guard dogs huddled around a fire to keep warm. They were not detected and made it out of Russia.

We walked around a graveyard of one of these quaint villages, and found no gravestone to any family member.

Shawn Mendes
Mendes was born in the city of Pickering, Ontario, to Karen (née Rayment), a real estate agent, and Manuel Mendes, a businessman, who sells bar and restaurant supplies in Toronto. His father is Portuguese (from the Algarve), while his mother is from England.

Oh my god the Jews are the real Nazis!!!! I always knew it!! It's a conspiracy!!!! :o
Tasteless jokes aside I have actually never heard of Ashkenazi (and I just noticed that my spell checker doesn't know them ether).
Oh well, something to look up now. :)

It is funny because as I was making that post, I mentioned to Carlos that Nazi is at the end of the word. How ironic. Here is Wikipedia's explanation:

When I read 'Ashkenazi', my first thought was the Russian pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy, who spells his name ending with a 'y'. His father was Jewish and mother Russian Orthodox.

I read/saw The Da Vinci Code so I knew the theory. I just didn't know it stemmed from that book-which I did not read. It may be worth reading.
But I didn't say that I was a direct decedent-just that I was related to him. It could be from anyone of his sibs, his cousins, etc.

A distant cousin traced my paternal line back to the 1200s when my ancestors "came out of the Black Forest and settled in the village of Stetton where they lived for generations as crafts people. One was part of Napoleon's army in Spain and was killed by Spanish farmers

I don’t have any info from ancestry websites nor have I taken those swab tests. I know of my mom’s family. My grandpa was 100% German, his parents from Germany. My grandma is of Welsh decent from her father and Cherokee Native from her mother. As for my dad’s family I’m not sure. I’ve heard different things from him and one of my uncles. That was way back when I was a tween. I’ve never been super close to his family. Certainly not close enough to find out stuff like that. But even the two of them were not sure. They mentioned different countries but I can’t give you all an honest answer cause I’m not sure.

We hear in the news that US President Joe Biden has paid homage to his Irish heritage as thousands of people gathered to greet him on a tour of the home county of his ancestors.
Another US with an Irish heritage, the previous ones I know of are John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, who both had visited the home county of their ancestors.

Dai has been doing some more work on his family tree. He has found out he is distantly related to Richard Treat one of the early settlers of Connecticut

Richard’s son Robert was elected governor of Connecticut in 1683

I have researched a lot the last few months and come to find out, I have family from all over Western and Northern Europe. As well as a few different Native American ancestors. And this includes my Grandma’s side. She has a lot more than we knew, including quite a bit of German and there is a good amount of it on my dad’s side as well. So I’m most definitely more than the quarter I for sure knew about. By the way, it was my Grandpa’s Grandparents (all 4 of them) who came over from Northern Germany. And it wasn’t until my Grandpa’s generation when other ancestries came into the mix (such as him marrying Grandma). The family has lived in Nebraska for decades. Honestly, the German side of me is what I have always identified with the most and now even more so. It’s great finding out all of this info though.

Mostly western Europe.
I thought I might have posted in this thread before, or a similar one...guess I hadn't.
