Subject: Is there any danger in showing your home movies?

Written By: 90s Guy on 07/14/18 at 8:50 am

I look at Youtube and I see many families have digitized and uploaded their home movies from the 80s, 90s and 00s, to be freely viewed by anyone. I am in the process of having my own tapes converted for preservation to MP4. I am considering uploading my own in chronological order, which would span in core from June of 1990 through January of 2007, both to save them for posterity and to give the world a little glimpse into another family's life as the world changed. 17 tapes, most film are 2 hours long and most directly follow the other; I have cataloged them:

0) Sister Karoake to True Blue, 1986
0A) Dad on TV Show, 1987
0B) Sister Ring Ceremony, 1988 (20 minutes)
OC) Sister music video with friend, 10-9-1989

1) June 10th through June 19th 1990 (40 minutes)
2) November 24th 1990 through March 24th 1991 (2 hours)
3) April 14th 1991 through July 18th 1991 (2 hours)
4) August 9th 1991 - December 24th 1991 (2 hours)
5) November 23rd 1991 - May 30th 1992 (2 Hours)
6) September 17th 1992 - July 18th 1993 (2 Hours)
7) September 14th 1993 - December 25th 1993; April 24th 1994 (2 hours)
8) April 26th 1994 - December 25th 1994; January 6th 1995; November 23rd 1995 (2 hours)
9) May 6th 1995 (7 minutes)
10) June 8th 1995 (20 minutes)
11) March 15th 1996 (2 1/2 hours) *Sister Sweet 16 professionally shot tape*
12) June 3rd 1996; June 21st-December 25th 1997; March-August 13th 1998; October-Dec 2000 (2 hours)
13) May 1st 1999 (1 hour) *professionally shot confirmation video*
14) December 25th 2000 - September 26th 2001 (2 hours)
15) May 2003 - January 1st 2004 (2 hours)
16) March 2004 - December 2005 (2 hours)
17) September 2006 - January 1st 2007 (2 hours)

Is this a bad idea? Is there any danger in this?

You should only ever give out information you are comfortable with giving out. If you are uncomfortable with anyone using it any malicious way, like, IDK, making a mean-spirited meme out of it, then it's probably best to keep it private.  :-X

It's not like they're sex tapes or anything.  :D

Digitizing the old movies is a good thing. It preserves them. We have old 16mm film that were first put on VHS and now they are digitized.  But showing them to the entire world may not be the best thing. In this day & age, putting EVERYTHING up on the internet makes it easy for identity thief.

You may be comfortable showing the world your old home movies but how does your family members feel? My sisters would have my head if I ever put any of our home movies on the internet.

Also, besides family and friends, who would be interested in watching 2 hours of people they don't know?  My suggested if you want to make them available to certain people, upload them as private password protected and give those who might like them the password. That way you don't have to worry about who may be watching them-you will know.

It might take a long time trying to transfer home movies to the internet or perhaps YouTube itself.

What format did you do yours to?
Also I was thinking of making them unlisted, meaning only those with the link can see them, and sharing them here.

I didn't do ours-I think it was my brother who did ours. He put all of them on a DVD. I would have to find that DVD. I know it is right in front of me but so are a lot of DVDs  (he gave me so many of them full of pics/movies, etc.) so I can't answer your question without going through each one.  One of my sisters have been putting music to some of them-since none had sound.

Word of caution: Making it unlisted would be safer-however, anything that is on the web CAN be hacked. But even if you post the link here-this is a public forum and anyone can have access to it.

I've been thinking of doing this. I will probably transfer all of my home movies on to DVDs at Walgreens.
