Subject: What's "wrong" with modern culture and society?

Written By: wixness on 09/22/17 at 10:12 am

Taking from what I've seen on here and elsewhere online, I think that the only good points I've seen are of the "participation trophy" phenomenon and the fact that people are accepting of others who hate Western culture.

Personally, what I think is wrong with modern culture and society these days is that no one wants or is able to change anything, and if they can or want to, the sort of change that happens is propping up old ways and/or authoritarianism. I don't know if I could use these examples, but I think that the fact that no one wants to question the rulership of Iran, North Korea, China and Saudi Arabia might have had something to do with it, which have become more authoritarian closer to this millennium than I believe in the previous millennium. To be fair, people only want to play nice with these guys because Saudi Arabia has lots of oil and the other three countries are building up on their nuclear arsenals as well as oppressing their own people.

During the Cold War, various changes have been made so that there are now bigger corporate monopolies in America - I think this might have had something to do with the Powell Memorandum, and someone cited how there were 50 media conglomerates in the middle of the previous century as opposed to probably today's six. Since 9/11, the Patriot Act has meant that we have to go offline to definitely preserve our privacy. Trump won, but by the electoral college vote (technically, more people voted for Hillary), with the worst thing about Trump's administration being the elimination of net neutrality (I don't know how it's going to benefit poor conservative voices though).

I think that with this decade, people are trying to bring back certain old ways or use old ways because they think it's "better" - people are too scared to innovate or otherwise take risks. They're trying to bring back old fashion which looks gender conforming and inoffensive in many cases; music is inoffensive or uninteresting and is sold in volumes instead of high value; technology is only making incremental improvements with many independent/smaller or more unique projects failing, such as Firefox OS and Project Ara.

What annoys me are people who think that modern culture and society is awful because it's allowing people to experiment with different styles and ways of living even though they are inherently harmless. For instance, Computing Forever used an image of Conchita Wurst on one of his videos and used the word "cultural Marxism" to describe it (among with a few other pictures), and Paul Joseph Watson has made a video deriding modern architecture - the latter has a point, but I don't want the days of a campaign against "Entartete Kunst" in Nazi Germany to be brought back, which internet conservatives seem to want, in addition to propping up authoritarian movements on their own soil, while some members of the left are shilling for China and North Korea.

I genuinely think that modern culture and society is directionless. It has been like this since the turn of the millennium. It's almost as if we're stuck in a rut and we haven't entirely comprehended that we're in the 21st Century. There's a lot of things which are wrong with modern culture and society at the moment. I think it has all become disjointed and commercialised.

Whenever I watch/listen to pop culture from the 20th Century, I get the impression that there was still a sense of "unity" among society and people in general. There was still an eagerness to explore undiscovered things and take the world in new directions. For whatever reason, that mindset seemed to change around the turn of the millennium. It seemed like everything suddenly became more "corporate" and commercialised. Quality and unity went by the wayside, all for the sake of corporate greed. Now with the ongoing development of social media and smartphones, it has only become worse...

We don't know where to go next. We need a trailblazer and an innovator type, think Mozart and Beethoven!  :P

Absolutely. I blame the communism scares for the commercialisation of society. I could also blame computers and the internet for making business faster as well though.

An example of how modern society is becoming more authoritarian and backward, by further enforcing limits on use of intellectual property (which also makes fair use as well as more illicit uses harder): https://t.co/2diJTFHg97?amp=1

I only had to read the description - DRM will be standard on new content that even some independent organization supports (not typical of such to pull off such a dick move). It's a good thing for now that I don't like a lot of newer stuff though.

Right on the money. (No pun intended).
