I have always wondered why is this country so uptight with this subject, but we enjoy violence? There seems to be so many myths about nudity, and the one that comes to mind is that some people equate it with sex. First and foremost, there is NOTHING sexual about it because they are two separate things.

I really want to have a genuine discussion, so I hope this thread doesn't get deleted.

I noticed this too. When I was about 12, I went to London, and I saw a billboard ad with a topless lady. I was shocked and thought it was obscene at first, but then I thought about it and realized there was nothing really wrong with it. I think it helped seeing everyone else being not at all phased by it. It made me feel like the weirdo. ;D

As for "why"... Puritan view of modesty. Culture/religion, basically. You'll notice the Native Americans who've been on this continent for longer than most our ancestors aren't as strict about this sort of this thing.

I don't think arousal counts as 'sex'. People can be aroused by the weirdest things. I found anyone wearing thick framed glasses arousing at one point.  If that was considered a sexual item a lot of people would be in trouble. :P

Yeah, IDK why they stigmatise nudity but not as much as violence. I bet it's all politically driven though, to keep the enemies at bay.

I'd say it's due to the strong Christian values American society has. Those values built the foundations for American culture and lifestyle, which may explain why nudity is still viewed as being somewhat taboo among the public. As for why violence isn't viewed in the same manner, I believe it's because it's something that has occurred on a regular basis all throughout history. Think of all the wars which have been fought, the battles which have been won etc. Unfortunate as it is, it is a regular aspect of human life. Take into account people's desire to see action and entertainment, it's only natural that violence isn't viewed in the same manner as nudity. People want to see violence, because it engages people and creates a point of discussion. That's why people generally aren't concerned when they see fist-fights in TV shows or in movies.

I'm 18, and my parents still don't allow to watch movies with nudity nor can I play most video games with nudity like GTA, but yeah, with violence, my parents are fine. It's interesting, I think most Americans have been conditioned that way to where nudity is more taboo than violence. I'll admit, I'm usually very uncomfortable watching nudity, but not at all with violence, that's just how my mind has been conditioned, I rarely see nudity and I see violence all the time.

My mom said the reason she doesn't let me see nudity, but lets me see violence is because seeing nudity can cause lustful thoughts, but seeing violence usually doesn't cause violent thoughts.

So why not make July 5th a holiday as well, especially one that would be just as, if not more eagerly, anticipated as the 4th?  ;)

Absolutely. I think that people being very prudish about sexuality tend to be religious in nature or oppose the sexual revolution that feminism stood for in the past. I find that opposition to the sexual revolution and hence nudity for more dogmatic purposes is antithetical to a socially liberal society, but it shouldn't be surprising that people are beginning to hate social liberalism and freedom in general these days.

I have nothing against nudity. People can go naked in public for all I care. But nakedness is a sexual thing whether you want to look at it as a “human right” “freedom” etc. That’s just how it always has been in America. We see a naked person hey it’s natural to feel “arosed” since we’re so used to only seeing it in films and with a partner. I gather some people may not get arosed. But it’s just a natural thing. I’m not against public nudity but I do know it can cause issues. For instance, if I was married I would not want my husband seeing a naked woman in public. But to each their own. Long story short, if you all want to get naked do it lol. As for me, I don’t feel comfortable showing my naked body to anyone except for the person I’m sleeping with. And it has nothing to with body image it’s just my body, my business. So if you’re not my partner you’re not going to see it. 😃

Here in VT we have nude beaches (burrr) a nude bike ride and a nude march.  I guess VT has rid itself of that bit of puritanism. Just don't scare the horses
