Subject: The age thing
Written By: violet_shy on 08/03/16 at 3:20 pm
Everyone here knows that I am 35 going on 36 this year. When I tell people my age, people give me such a hard time! I have to show all kinds of documents(esp. my birth certificate) and things to prove I am almost 36. ::)
Whenever I meet someone for the first time they think I'm 19 or 20 years old. And then I have to prove them wrong and it makes me feel bad, lol. Has this happened to any of you? It's a nice compliment, but it can be annoying when I have to show all of my personal documents..

Why do you have to show people your personal documents? The only time you HAVE to is if you are trying to buy something and they ask for your ID. Otherwise, it really is no one's business.
If they don't believe you when you tell them how old you are, that is their problem-not yours. By showing them your documents, that is making it your problem and you shouldn't have to do that.

I never show random people anything, only when I go places. I know what you meant though and will keep that in mind. Thanks

People think I'm in my late 20's but when I tell them I'm 42, they're stunned. That's because I shave every day to keep my babyface look.

People think I'm in my teens, even though I'm 23. Not as egregious as it is for you (35 and 19 is much bigger difference, take it as a compliment! ;D), but it's annoying being carded for video games (you have to be 17 ???) or at the bar (legal age here is 19).

I still get carded for cigarettes and alcohol even tho my tattoos that I got when I was 18 are old enough to buy alcohol. Will be 41 in two weeks. It's annoying because no 21 year old has a few gray hairs in his goatee. It's gone from complimentary to "are you fudgeing stupid?". On a good day, fresh and shaved I do still look late 20s tho.

I've gotten the same thing and it's been happening for several years. When I was younger, some folks thought I was older because of my height and now some people think I'm younger as my beard my shaved.

I'll be 50 years old later this year, but I still look plausibly in my 20s. Several years ago at my college reunion one of my former classmates thought that I was a current undergraduate. Also, one of the security guards wanted to ticket me because I was parked in the guest parking lot. He told me I looked like a student, too. I told him I was an alum and that I remembered him from my college days from, ummm, a certain incident. He laughed and said he believed me (guess he remembered, too? ;)). So, in my early 40s, evidently I still looked <= 22. Back when I actually was 22 (ca 1988), I was in a Las Vegas casino playing the slot machines when one of the security guards thought I was a high school kid. Even after I showed him my driver's license, he didn't believe me; he thought my ID was fake. Fortunately, my parents were there to vouch for me. Anyway, showing IDs is normally not an issue for me because I don't smoke and I don't drink and rarely go to bars.
Basically, I'm happy and grateful for looking much younger than my age. Sure, it can be slightly annoying when people think you're "one of those Millennial kids", but I'm philosophical about it. I figure that if I looked my age, or older than my age, I'd be unhappy about that. I'd be spending lots of money trying to look younger, and the young people would think I'm one of those old fart Gen-Xers or Baby Boomers instead. I know of people my age and younger who get upset when a store clerk gives them a Senior Discount or when people think that their similarly-aged friend/coworker/spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend must be their son/daughter. Grass is always greener on the other side. Actually, it's definitely greener on the young side. It's much harder to make yourself look younger than it is to make yourself look older.
People will always make assumptions or judgements based on your apparent age, race, gender, etc. I actually get much more upset when people make assumptions based on my apparent gender and race. Yes, I speak English. Yes, I'm in the correct bathroom. No, I did not "steal" your job. No, that person is not related to me.

Several years ago, Carlos went into the grocery store and bought some orange juice and paid for it in cash. The person asked to see his ID. ???
He still gets carded when he buys tobacco. I think it is the store policy that EVERYONE gets carded no matter how old/young they look.
I don't think I look my age but I am really not the person to judge that.

Some stores do that. Not only alcohol & tobacco, but also certain over-the-counter medications and other products that could be used to manufacture drugs. One store will actually scan your ID, using that same device they use to scan the UPC bar codes. I know this because the other night I was stuck behind someone when his ID wouldn't scan properly. The clerk had to call the manager and she had to enter the information into the computer manually.
The government also supposedly sends out undercover enforcers -- people dressed in casual clothes buying alcohol & whatnot -- to test compliance. The store probably doesn't want to get into an argument about "well, in MY opinion, she didn't look under 35...". Particularly in the case of alcohol, they're also worried about lawsuits, e.g. if someone underage buys something from them and drives off and kills somebody. It's just safer for the store to simply instruct its employees to card everyone. It's also easier on the clerks. You don't have to constantly try to guess what every customer's age is, you don't risk lawsuits, and you don't risk offending people by implying you think they're younger/older than they actually are. You can just say, "store policy: everybody gets carded".

I'm in my early 30's and have had people say I look early 20's to mid 20's. I still get carded half the time I go to restaurants. I know places are supposed to do that. Still, sometimes I wonder if it's only because they have to. You can't help getting older. I always say it's all up to how you feel. Some people are too old for their age in their 20's, others are young at heart into middle age. Personally I can't relate to many people my age. You're not too old to be youthful if that's how you feel. I still like playing video games, I prefer fantasy to romance themes marketed at grown women, and would rather spend a day at a carnival, a night at a concert, and planning a new piercing or tattoo than being expected to settle down and be dull and not live life. I'm no party animal, but what fun is it to miss out on everything because society supposedly thinks you're too old? I don't get time to go out and have fun too often, so when I can hang out I want to make the most of it.

LOL a funny thing just happened to me. My 11 year old sister's new nurse called me down yesterday. It was late at night, and she told me to look after my sister because she had to go. She was giving extremely detailed pointers on how to take care of her, to do this to do that, put her to bed etc. And I nodded along. I thought she was just being nice.
Today she got home the same time I did, and my parents and sister went out so they aren't here yet. So we were having a chat. She asked me how old I was, and I said 24, and her jaw almost hit the floor. She thought I was "under 18" and "around my sister's age" (11!!) so she was extremely worried about leaving my sister with another minor. Lol, I used to change my sister's diapers, slap the powder on, give her a bath and rock her to sleep when I was 13/14 and she was just a baby. Usually I get offended at these comments, but for some reason I couldn't help but laugh ;D ;D ;D

I'm 5'5 and I've never been mistaken for looking older or younger. I would say I look about my age.
Being 5 ft 5 and also be a 15 year old girl is normal. As a matter of fact, being a 5 ft 5 female period (at any age above 11) is normal.
Try being a 5 ft 5 tall 15 year old male :\'(.

So I shouldn't feel bad myself, being 37 and being mistaken as a 20-something.
the reason I make myself young is that I shave everyday.

Why is that? Is it becasue of the way you look or do you act a little childish?
It's because I shave everyday or every other day if I wind up forgetting.

That's funny odd because I'm only 5 ft 7 and since I reached my late 30s and now early 40s people mistake me for being in my late 20s. It's very flattering but frustrating at the same time.

The best way to stay looking young is to wear sunscreen/avoid the sun. I've been wearing sunscreen since I was 15, and people still seem to confuse me for being 15, so it checks out.

Yeah, I don't see it as bad.
I can see being short affecting it (being short isn't bad either btw :)), I'm 6 ft. 2 in., so I don't think it has to do with my height, it could be that I'm usually clean shaven. I'm starting to look like a wolf boy right now though, so I probably need to shave soon. :P

I think that my face looks about my age. So in this case I think that my height (or lack thereof) is a big reason for the slight under guessing of my age by some people.
If I was your height (6'2"), I think that virtually no one would think that I'm 16-17 :P ;D.

That's true. I know when I'm 40 and I can still pass for being in my 20s I'll be more thankful. However, I think there's something more irksome for being confused for a teenager. I feel like people don't take me as seriously or don't see the need to be polite/respectful because they think I'm a kid.
Like a month or so ago, when I was waiting for the bus and it was really cold, the bus came but it was behind 3 or 4 cars at the intersection. I decided to walk towards the bus, so I can get in instead of freezing out there. When I got to the bus he didn't open the door. When the intersection was go and the bus came forward, and I got in, he was really rude and scolded me like a little kid "Where is the bus stop? Is it back there or is it here? Where are you supposed to wait?" etc. Anyway, I apologized, even though I didn't cause any delays. I feel like if he knew I wasn't a kid he wouldn't talk to me like that. :-X

Naw, he was 100% in the wrong. There's no rule saying you have to stop exactly at the bus stop and not literally ~10 steps away, lol. We don't need that kind of pedantic precision especially since he was holding up traffic by stopping when the light was green.

It is different for girls. Most girls hit puberty between 12 and 14 (some earlier, some later). There are drastic changes that go on during that time.

I don't care if people know how old I am-I just hate to say it out loud.

same here, Why should people know how old I am? It's none of their business.

No Howard, nooo! Age means everything! Well...it does to me anyway. I enjoy getting older. Just think of all of the moments you had to go through to get to age 44....amazing right? That means a lot to me. I'm happy that you are 44 and that you are posting on the boards. I know I'm weird, hahaha lol.

If it isn't relevant, I/they/whoever don't need to know.

But the good thing about being in my 40's is that I'm aging gracefully and the only gray hairs are on both sides of my head, What about you?

I think I'm starting to look older. I fully grew out my beard and wear fancy shmancy clothing (even bought a good watch!). I can't say for sure that people think I'm older (someone thought I was 20, but I was wearing a hoodie then), but I notice more people call me "sir" instead of "bud/buddy/sweetie" etc.

I'm 44 and just yesterday in Burger King someone thought I looked like John Travolta with my shades on so that made me feel a bit younger.

So I went to buy a shaker bottle this afternoon. The store near a university campus, and while the store owner was helping me pick out a bottle he asked me "are you in first year?", first year as in first year of university. God damn it! I was dressed business casual too. At first I was a bit peeved but now I think it's kind of funny ;D
He also asked me if I wanted a shaker bottle "for my girlfriend". So many assumptions! :P

F** age. Its all about killing loneliness. I need that warmth and its also more lethal I missed the opportunities in my teens, peak 20s. If she's into it, I'm 17, 18, etc. I'm into fitness for all the more benefits anyway.
Come at me.

I am always mistaken for being younger than my age. I was visiting my mum a few days ago and answered her door and the guy who knocked said ‘Excuse me, are your parents home?’. >:(
Worst part? The guy was 19! He was raising funds for some young person’s thing.

I'm not saying I don't want an older women or a women that's the same age as me, I really do but, a lot of them be taken tho. The next girl I approach who look like a adult, I won't even bring up the age topic anymore. I'mma just go all in. I was actually complimented that I don't even look my age, I even analyzed for my self and was blown away by it.
(If) she brings up age tho, then that's my q to dip, like it never even happened. All I really want is to hold a girl by her waist at the end of the day.

Oh, I see. Yeah, I heard the median marriage of American women is very young, around the mid-20s :o

I married for the first time at age 19-the second time age 40. The first time all the warning signs were there but I was too naive to know what they were or too stupid to see them.

Marriage is a joke. Either you love each other are you don't. I like casualness with my sh!t, our intimacy in secrecy. When its time to part, I'll watch from the distance as she go inside.
Classic.

There are benefits to marriage. Insurance, taxes, and things like that. When Carlos & I got married, we each got something. I got his insurance and he got a military dependent ID card. We filed jointly which was a savings. There were probably other benefits but I can't think of them at the moment.

I rather enjoy my single's life. It doesn't mean that I'm not weighing out the options. It just means that my standards are higher than most women's standards! There are a lot of fakes online which is why my standards are so high.

Over time, I have as well. The difference has grown considerably since I was (in truth) about 10. It does bother me because I don't like to be thought of as younger than I truly am.

I'm two years older than hubby. It's not a problem - sometimes we joke about it, but he doesn't go too far (usually). We're happy after 20 years, and a two year gap is ok. I once briefly dated a guy when I was 26 and he was just 20 - that was a little eye opening.
My Dad was 17 years older than my Mom. That's a significant age gap, and it showed in some of their cultural takes. But they made it work (for the most part; they split up later, mostly Mom's idea).
I got married older than average. Single life had its moments, but I love being married! My hubby's awesome! :-*

Which is funny, because there was a time when you were considered a washed up spinster if you weren’t married by 25. The Japanese even had a saying comparing Christmas to marriage - it’s over after the 25th. ;D
Here in the UK the average age when someone first gets married is around 31 for women and 33 for men. In 1971 it was 23 for women and 25 for men.

A 17 year age gap sounds extreme. The age gap at the most should be 10 years, it sounds badass. As long as you take care of your physique and chill about it. From my point of view, with a younger girl, something about it. I like how intriguing it is. If intriguingly warmth is the right way to word it.

Carlos is 17 years older than me. There are some things that he won't get the reference to so I have enlighten him. My Hubby is also awesome and wouldn't trade him in for a newer model.
The funny thing is, my step-dad was 18 years older than my mother.

15 years. And it is the second marriage for both of us.

My parents were born 9 years apart so they fell just under your range ;D
Similar to American Girl, I was a 25 year old dating a 20 year old (although he was 4.5 years younger than me technically). Not that I'm ultra mature or anything but the maturity/life experience gap was apparent at times. :-[
