Subject: Stereotypes about "nerds"/geeks?
Written By: Marty McFly on 12/27/07 at 8:40 pm
While I think it's less true these days, there does seem to be a longtime stereotype perpetuated by certain people, that if you get really deep into something, or like to analyze details...that you must be "a loser with no life", or don't have good social skills. Stuff to that regard.
In certain respects, it's hard for me not to be offended or at least slightly annoyed by it, since I've always been something of a geek or a nerd myself. Although the irony is that my basic personality when I'm comfortable doesn't fit this at all. I tend to be pretty outgoing in something of a "surfer dude" way (from what people have told me, lol).
See, I'm very analytical of things like...song lyrics, plots in movies, geography, people's attitudes/behavior or personalities, pop culture/decades and time, playing certain video games...and just tons of stuff like this. I've always been that way too, and there've been times people have sorta thought it was weird or didn't really understand that about me. This is always something that I've wondered about since it's not fun having to defend being myself.
For the record, I don't mind being a nerd. Hey, Weird Al has been called that too, and he's one of my biggest heroes. ;) I'm more of a nerd like him (in a funny, creative way) as opposed to a pocket protector way....although any kind isn't bad at all.

I've always been more of a geek type... Since my interest have always been in the area of hobbies. I was a lone wolf(I did talk to people, but didn't have the desire to try and fit in) in high school, but that was due to being an outsider.
I know I'm not A+ student nerd material, most nerds have a IQ higher than mine(well, what the online test said).
I don't fit the mold of what a standard nerd/geek is appearance wise. My hair was short at first, but I started growing it out... I hated(and still do) hate how I look with short hair. I look more like an alternative/grunge person.

Just thought I'd give this a BUMP
Does anyone think technology being in our daily lives more has reduced the negative image of nerds that used to exist? Like, around 1999 that stereotype of "going on a computer makes you a dork" seemed to really fade away. By then, pretty much everyone had the Internet. I think that's partially why it's become alot cooler and more normal, even accepted to be a nerd. This includes having deep interests in certain things.
I guess I was always just a little ahead of my time and didn't know it. :)

I am a geek/nerd to the core.
If you use a word I have never heard, I ask you to define or I go look it up.
If you start to talk about something I know nothing about - I research it until I can find no further information.
I fix/build computers and programming. ie. software issues, install cards and hard drives, upgrades, html, javascript etc. (Even learned the old school C+++ and for my own knowledge, tore apart the old DBase program to find out how it worked) lol
In college I started to read the dictionary for the fun of it - but got bored lol
I don't have a pen pocket protector, but I do have about 5-8 pens in my purse. My vista gadget has a calc, dictionary.com, wiki link and DIY hub.
Now, looking at me, you would never guess. I love knowledge and have a passion to learn even more.
And to me........... Geeks/Nerds DO IT BEST!!!!!! ;D 8)

Not to beat a dead horse, but I was thinking about one reason there might be a negative reaction against like if you have more indepth knowledge on something than most people, and tend to get really into it. Do you think it's maybe because it makes you sound like a cocky "know it all" (even if that's not the intent)?
Like Trekkies or people who play Dungeons and Dragons are still looked at as geeky (in a bad way lol). Or even like how I am with analyzing music or just my interest in history and pop culture from the 20th century.
That's just the way I am with lots of things. I just kinda talk informationally or get into storytelling mode without even trying. My mind just always worked that way even as a kid, I don't do it on purpose. It just seems like most people think it's cooler to be like "This rocks" (which I do too, but more in a casual setting) as opposed to getting all detailed. I kinda always made an effort to be both, almost so it would MAKE that seem cooler. Like geeky, but not so much that I come off like this robot with no personality, so maybe they'd have more acceptance of it. ;D
I can see both sides of it though. I think it's cool to go a little deeper on things, but like I could care less about football (so I can't contribute much to a discussion). I know lots of people do which I'm cool with, but it would get annoying to me to have to hear much about it. So I guess it's the same deal with everyone, you just lose interest after so much, depending on what you like.

I think there's a difference between between telling someone something, in terms of educating them/correcting them and telling someone something because you're totally AR.
Sometimes in the board games some one will make a boo boo and the AR people will call them on it like it's a big deal...
I work with a girl who's a science nerd (she calls herself that) so all of her references relate to her field. She also does some real world renissance battle thingy with swords and garments and stuff. We don't find a lot of common ground and frankly her little asides bore me but then again all my references are TV related so I probably bore her too.

^ Yeah lol I can see that. I guess it just depends on the person. and what we each individually like. There's lots of things I enjoy on a basic level, but if someone tried to explain details to me I'd glaze over too lol, so I can't blame someone else if they don't like to nitpick movies or music trends, etc.
BTW, if you think that's bad, you should see some stuff I noticed as a kid. Like I was really into song fades (like when they get quieter at the end) for awhile, or like I used to like to go to a certain point upstairs in our house and try to see where downstairs was right below it. Yeah, I know I was weird. ;D

I think I have pretty diverse interests: I don't know if it's considered nerdy, but when I really get into something I get really stuck into it - that's how I become knowledgeable about subjects I'm interested in. I'm really into anything from geography, history, science, philosophy and music but I also enjoy watching and talking about sport. I guess the interest in sports stats is a bit nerdy, but while I've always liked numbers I'm pretty intuitive and creative...at heart part of me is a nerd and I'm not ashamed of it, but I'm far from a stereotypical one.
