Subject: The Birds & The Bees Talk

Written By: quirky_cat_girl on 01/15/07 at 10:32 pm

So, when did your parents have that dreaded "talk" with you....or did you learn on your own from friends, school, etc?

I was around 10 or so, I think. I didn't want any parts of it. As soon as my mom started talking...I stuck my fingers in my ears and started humming loudly. ;D :D  Talk about making it extra hard for her! ;D

They never did.  I knew more about it than they did, so they didn't bother.

Talk?  What talk?
:P

I was probably six.  I pretty much knew what it was, but my mother gave us the talk anyway.  I don't remember what prompted it.  I do remember she was a bit overboard explicit and it made me queasy.

She later explained that when her mother gave her "the talk," it was completely dry and clinical, and the old lady talked about it as though she would rather be on the moon!  Thus, my mother wanted us kids to understand that sex was wholesome and natural.  She just went to far in the OTHER direction from her mother's approach.  Eeeew!  That's pretty much the story of their generation's approach to everthing!

See, I heard dribs and drabs about it before "the talk," and got some weird notions.  Living in a farming community, I knew what "fertilizer" was.  I think my friend Joey got the same talk as my mom because he told me at recess that to make babies, "the man fertilizes the lady."
Whoah! Joey, that's disgusting!  Sorry ma, no grandchildren for you, I don't swing that way!

I don't remember if my parents ever talked to me about the Birds and the Bees.  All the sex and innuendo on TV told me more than I needed wanted to know ;D

I asked the proverbial "babies" question that every kid does when I was 5-6. First it was to my mom - who told me to "ask Dad", lol. And I did. To this day, I'm still thankful that he explained it to me in a very easygoing, casual sense.

When I say "casual", I mean that it was clear and easy enough for me to grasp it, but it also sure wasn't like *cue stern fatherly voice* "Son, do you have any questions about sex?" ;D

Sure, I was off on a couple things and didn't understand every aspect of it, but I definitely "got it enough". I wasn't freaked out by it or anything. Oh I'm not sure I would've thought of that conclusion on my own before then, lol, but it made sense to me.

Over the next few years, I'd slowly pieced together the rest on my own (i.e. from listening to people or hearing things in TV and movies). By the time I started adolescence myself (around 11 and a half, in 1993) nothing really surprised me anymore.

Not sure how old I was but my mum got this really good book out of the library aimed at explaining sex to children. She gave me that to read and then answered any questions I had afterwards.

How funny, I was just thinking about this last night.  I don't think I ever had a talk with my parents, the only time anything was said was when I got my period the first time.  I didn't even know what a period was  :o. (I had just turned 10 and I thought I was dying!!).

Before going to bed my daughter started asking a bunch of questions about horses..."How can you tell the difference between a boy horse and a girl horse?", "How do mama's make milk?",  "Exactly where does the baby come out ?" and "How does the baby get in there in the first place?".  Then she asked how her brother came out!!

My mission today is to find a good book that will help me explain things without traumatizing her.

I never had the 'talk' from my parents.  I remember that when I was about 8 or so I spent ages sitting on the stairs trying to screw up the courage to ask my mum where babies came from.  I obviously didn't do so.

Basically nothing was said until I started biology at high school.  Even then it was more 'ask us if you have any questions' (from my dad when he saw I was studying chicken reproduction).  In Health Education we did something on periods and that.  My mum gave me the chance to ask some questions then but never really volunteered the info.

My daughter asked me about it when she was 3.  I was expecting her younger brother and she was asking various things about it.  I've no idea if she recalls what I said.

Shortly after my daughter was born i went to visit a friend.  She has twin boys and she had been telling them about how babbies were made.  One of them asked if he could see where the baby had come out!

My mom also gave me a book (which I had secretly read years before) and told me to let her know if I had questions.  I thought I had a basic grasp of things, but the first time I saw a guy *ahem* ready, I was horrified.  I had no idea it...did that.  :o

I always just knew. I freaked the neighbors out one time when I was about 4-6 (can't remember exactly how old I was). We had a bunch of cats and two of them were "going at it" and I tried to seperate them, saying, "Stop that! We don't want anymore kittens."  ;D ;D ;D

Oh man, when I first got my period, I didn't want to tell anyone (being the last in a house full of girls, there was no way I couldn't have known). Unfortunely, we were out of pads when it happened so I had to tell. My WONDERFUL  ::) sister was so "conciderate". She started chanting, "Cat's on the rag. gotta love those sisters, huh? ;D  We happened to be on vacation when I got mine. I was 12 years old. I sat in the bathroom and cried and made my mom guess what was wrong with me....she guessed right away, and I was amazed that she knew. So the rest of the day, I proceeded to stock up on pads (enough for a year's supply)...my mom just laughed at me...it was like a novelty in my eyes. :D ;D

I never got "the talk" either.  We learned about it at school in 4th or 5th grade.  I remember going on a field trip to the health museum and the boys and girls going into different rooms.  They still do it the same way....my oldest did it in 5th grade.  I almost died when he said (the day before) "Mom, I sure hope they don't show any pictures tomorrow"  and I asked (stupid me ::)) "Any pictures WHERE tomorrow?"  He said "We're having 'the talk' (complete with "quote/unquote" finger gestures) tomorrow" and I (again, stupid me ::)) said "Oh!  Why don't you want to see pictures?"  And he says "Well, some kids were saying when you get pubert (no that's not a typo), you get a hairy penis" :o  So, there I am, stuck in a car with him waiting for his brother to get out of karate, having to explain pubic hair to him ;D  After which I told him "If you have any questions after school tomorrow, Daddy will be home tomorrow night" ;)

I think I got you all beat for period stories.  I was 10 when I got mine and guess who I had to tell....as they were the only person home?

My dad.  My mom was at work.  I tell him what's going on and he goes to the upstairs apartment to get my GRANDMOTHER to come and talk to me.  I was beyond mortified.  I knew what it was, as I had friends who had gotten it already.  I was the oldest girl....my dad was not prepared for this.  He spent the whole day mumbing to himself about women and bras.....I think I scarred him for life.  ;D

My first period story is similar.....but possibly worse....I was 11 and my older brother was babysitting me.  Well, I knew what was up and where my mom kept everything, BUT she was "old school" and wore the old pads that hooked on to the belt :o  Well, she's a lot bigger than me and the belt was HUGE and I had to ask my older brother if he knew how to make it smaller.  He, of course, had no clue what it was so I had to explain it to him.....to this day, he freaks out if I or anyone else mentions anything remotely "female" to him (which works to my advantage at times) ;D

Ah, period stories.

I remember like a couple of months after I started, I was at the chiropractor's office getting my adjusted. My sister (who was almost 4 at the time) and mom tagged along with me. So I'm laying there getting my back adjusted when all of a sudden my sister starts singing (at the top of her lungs), "Jessica's on the rag! Jessica's on the rag!" My mom was mortified.

My sister is the same one who decided at the age of 3 that it would be proper to sit in a Kmart cart and sing, "Me So Horny" while shopping. ;D

Luckily, I had a brother and with a brother around, you learn stuff indirectly that you may not want to know until much later, but being that boys are boys, you hear that kinda stuff referring to the birds and bees and get exposed to it. I never really had a fear of learning about it, but I thought it was much simpler than what it turned out to be. I thought "kissing" was the making baby part. Yeah, I was naive. But, when I was about 10 years old, I started watching a PBS special about teenagers and they had a discussion with teenagers and that was the moment that the "birds and bees" was revealed. I was in total shock. I had NO idea that the boy part went inside this other girl part that I never knew existed. I think they showed illustrations. I was forever shocked! I started looking at people differently, lol  ;D

Never really had 'The Talk'. Of course, since then the old man has bestowed much info.

1) Always look at the mother, that's what you're getting in 20 years.
2) Hit 'em hard, hit 'em strong.
3) Remain stoic.

This could explain my fu.cked up casual attitude to sex.

I was 6... some 6th graders on the bus asked me if I was a virgin.. I had no idea what that was at the time, so I asked my parents. Boy, that sure was a fun talk as a 1st grader. The anatomical differences and mechanics of intercourse were explained at this age.

My talk regarding the reprocussions of sex occured when I was 13, after my cousin became pregnant at 17.. we've never actually had a talk about the emotional aspects of sex or anything about purity or abstinence (mostly because my family doesn't have some strict purity code, it's just "Don't do anything stupid, and don't bring it in my house if you do." is our policy), but I was told to understand the potential outcomes.

I have however walked in on my roommate doing it, though.  Now that was fun.  Her door was wide open, but the lights were off and she had borrowed a book of mine for class and I went to get it back.  All four of us were very close and had an open-door policy with each other.  You could go in and out of each other's rooms to get something, no questions asked.  I never worried about them stealing anything and neither did they.  So, I flip the light on and there she is, naked on top of some guy and she looks over at me and goes "Oh, your book is in my backpack."

TELL ME ABOUT IT!  I got back to my room and one of my other roommates, my friend Lauren, asked me what she was doing since I walked out of her room with a strange look on my face.  I say, "Go find out for yourself" and as she's getting to the door she hears her say, "No one come by, I'm having an orgasm."  From that moment on, when we wanted to be left alone in our rooms, that's what we'd say and she'd just bust out laughing.

The four of us had so much fun that year.

LOL it's good to be here!

Luckily it wasn't too awkward at the time... since I really didn't have a clue what was going on... I knew what sex was in theory, but knew nothing about the accompanying sound effects.  I really was scared, I thought one of my parents was hurt.  If I had known, I probably would have been really embarrassed...

I actually got the talk when I was about 11... for some reason i couldn't sleep one night and so I got up and was about to go into my parents room... when I heard umm.. well what I thought was one of my parents having breathing difficulties... I thought something was wrong, so I yelled from the door "Are you guys ok??"  Maybe 1 minute later my mom opened the bedroom door in her bathrobe, assured me that she was ok, and told me to go back to bed.

Stupid me, I asked questions in the morning... :-[
When I was about 11, my parents were supposed to be "at work" and my grandmother was babysitting me.  Well, my best friend and I went for a bike ride and went by my house to get a tape to listen to.  Needless to say, both of my parents' cars were in the driveway so we walked in the house.  As we were going up the stairs, we heard my mom and thought something was wrong at first.  As we got closer and heard some "words", it hit us what was going on and we booked out of there.  We never spoke of it after that  :-X

I did get asked by my nephew when he was about 8 or 9 and I was babysitting him. I told him that that question couls only be answered by his Dad(my brother) and he'd better ask him as soon as he got home.  ;D

I do remember my Mumj saying to my brother when he started going out if he wasn't careful she'd sew a button on it!

I have also been asked by some of my Cubs a little about it.  They had started sex ed classes at school and were talking about it one meeting.  I spoke to the older boys then to ask them not to talk about it around the youngsters.  A week or so later I was with a group of the older ones and they asked me some questions.  I tried to answer them as straightforwardly as possible with going into too much detail and then told them to ask their parents or their teacher.  The main thing of concern seemed to be puzzlement over someone they knew who was pregnant but not married!

We also used to take cherry turnovers (the triangle shaped ones) and peel off layers of the pastry and pretend it was a heart (we'd even take the corners and push them towards each other to simulate "beating") and do "open heart surgery", which would make her run to the bathroom and puke.....we weren't very nice to her :-\\

This thread is hilarious.

My sex education:
From my parents: "When a man and a women love each other they get married and a stork from Paris brings them a baby" :o
From my older brothers i got:"All men are creeps who will use you for sex, always say no,and if some guy bothers you tell us and we'll take care of him!" ::)
From my older sister: "Don't forget to take the pill everyday and if so make him use a condom!" She also showed me how to put a condom on a cucumber, apparently her boyfriend was very blessed ;D
From my first boyfriend i learned that men are way more insecure than us about sex. And the more you do it,the better it gets ;)

Right after high school, I took a semester of college at the local community college-still living at home. My boyfriend at the time came to pick me up every morning (since he was going to the same school). One day when I was waiting for him in the livingroom, I heard some strange noise coming from what seemed to be the wall. I went over to investigate to try to figure out what it was-then I did. It was my parents' bed squeaking up a storm. When I got home from school that day, I told my mother that she could have at least waited until I left. She looked at me and asked (almost red faced), "You weren't gone?"  OOPS!!!

There was another time when I was about 11 or so. I was with my dad and an orginazation he used to belong to called Parents Without Partners. A whole group of us went to Assateague Beach in Maryland for about a week. I was with a bunch of kids and we were running around the beach and up on some of the sand dunes. I went up on one and I saw some guy's naked butt ontop of some chick. I did a 180 and ran in the opposite direction (toward's the water). It was low tide and there was a drop close to the water so I ducked down and hid behind it. A few minutes later the kids I was with followed me-yelling I might add. I just peered over the sand we were hiding behind and I saw some guy standing on top of a dune with his hands on hips scouring the beach. I have no idea what the kids I was with did.  The poor guy-he just wanted a good time and to have it intrupted by a bunch of kids.  :D ;D ;D

BTW, it is great to see you back.

I was 12 when I started mine, and I'd always had a tough time trying to talk to my mom, so I just decided to fashion something to use since we didn't have what I needed...

Eventually my mom caught on, and took me to the bathroom to talk about what to use for it... :-[

I was also 12. I was actually at school when it happened. We started doing the track thing, where you go for 3 months and then take a month off and then the cycle continues. I started 7th grade in July, and I remember sitting in my Science class/lab and thinking how bad my back hurt and that I needed to stretch it out as I was in terrible pain. Then later, once school ended, I finally hit the bathroom at a gas station and realised I had something bleeding down there, but I thought I was just too young to be having my period. It took me about 3 days to finally tell my mom and fortunately, it wasn't a very heavy period. By the time I told her, we decided to go to the grocery store and buy some material. I thought that period was painful, but the one in August was so painful, I remember those excrutiating 7 days til this day! (almost 13 years ago)

OK, here goes:

Never had the talk. Grew up with an older brother full of hormones, a mother with whom I shared a dressing room when performing (who was a Dolly Parton Lookalike), and a sister who was too busy raising hell to care much.

Walked in on my mom & now-ex-stepfather twice- both times it was to bring them coffee prior to breakfast. *full-out body shudder*

Walked in on my older brother, when I caught him & his girlfriend in my bed!
I was HOT!!!!!!
However, he got paid back...he was performing oral sex on her, and she ...um...kinda gassed him.
Just out of the worng end.
To this day, my brother swears he doesn't do that anymore.

Ya know. Thinking back I do remember a day when mom was driving me to school. (NO I wasn't one of those spoiled kids who got driven 3 blocks to schol, I got suspended and expelled from 2 local schools so I had to go about 7 miles away) anywho, we pull up to a red light about a block from the school gates and she asks "Is there anything you need to know about Sex, you never mention it." I think my response was probably something uncomfortable like 'Guuh.. no, s'ok, err, I'll get out here, bye'.

I have a very vivid memory from 7th grade as well.  I'd been out on the field for P.E., playing soccer, when my period got very heavy and caused me to leak through.  I was sent to the nurse's office, and from there my dad picked me up and took me home.  I still remember him putting something down on the carseat so I wouldn't make a mess.  I was soooo embarrassed.  :-[

Ohh, that is the WORST. It brought back some memories for me when you were describing that.. The one I had in August of that year (1994), I remember I got out of school early that day and right before the last class ended, I had to run to the bathroom. Luckily, I got there just in time, as I was bleeding out already. I tried to make do with just toilet paper and then run out to my mom's car. Luckily, she had some stuff in her car for emergencies and we went somewhere and I fixed the situation. Ughh, you just feel so gross though, and want to take a shower immediately when that happens.

That happened to me in high school.  Right in the middle of a trig test.  I stood up to give my teacher the exam and my friend Cara jumped up and ran up behind me and shoved me out the door to the bathroom.  Apparently I had bled through to my uniform skirt.  I was so embarrassed.  Luckily I had an extra skirt in my locker and I gave her the combo to my locker and she got it for me.

Oh, I am glad that didn't happen to me - in front of the class. That did happen to one of my friends when she got hers. I unfortunately was out sick the day it happened, but she was wearing white pants (of all days) and one of her friends had to shoo her over to tell her she had red stuff on her butt and elsewhere. I felt SO bad when she told this story to me.   :(

;D I actually think of that often when I put those smiley faces in replies, because there's no inbetween - there's the happy face and the super smiley laughing face, but if you put the super smiley laughing face next to the really mad face, it takes on a whole different meaning and is somewhat comical, lol.

Karma right back-atcha  :)

Ok, since I can't  find the lyrics to this song, I am going to try to write them down from memory for you. Please bear with me if I make a few booboos.

Well, I woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. I could feel this thing wash over me like a giant wave. I was put off and p!ssed off and ready to kiss off the whole wide world. Sometimes it is so hard being a girl.

'Cause it's a P.M.S. kind of day. So everyone out of my way. I don't want your advice. I don't want to be nice 'cause it's a P.M.S. kind of day.

Now my hubby, my sweety he tells me that I am driving him out of his mind. Then he said, "Oh no. Don't tell me. Is it that special time? Again?  Drink plenty of water, take lots of Midol until this thing goes away." Nothing he says, is the right thing to say.

'Cause it's a P.M.S. kind of day. So everyone out of my way. I don't want your advice. I don't want to be nice 'cause it's a P.M.S. kind of day.

You guys this really is real. We ladies can't help how we feel. And we don't like it any better then you. And if you have a period you'll understand too.

Now my clothes don't fit right and my bra is too tight and I feel like a blimp. But I still run out and buy tons of cookies and pie and shovel them in. I feel frazzled and flakey and razzled and shakey and wish I was back in my bed. And if you look at me wrong I'll chew off your head.*

'Cause it's a P.M.S. kind of day. So everyone out of my way. But I'm hoping that when, my estergen, is normal again, and I'm on the mend, that you'll still be my friend, but until then, it's a P.M.S., a P.M.S., a P.M.S kind of day.

*Sung in the voice of the devil. lol

I remember the first time I decided to switch to tampons... I made the mistake of reading the directions that come in the box and following them...  it wasn't in right...  yes, I was in a lot of discomfort and yes it leaked.   Those directions are 100% useless.  I did alot better figuring it out on my own.

Did you watch that video too, that showed the live birth?  The one I saw, the woman needed forceps used, and you saw them tugging at the baby's head trying to yank it out.  I had to watch it again in college for a sociology class, and this girl in the back screamed, "they're shoving salad spoons in her cooter!"

Sooo funny.

Wouldn't surprise me.  It was equally as horrifying.  By that I mean, watching a doctor force the forceps into the woman to get around the baby's head to pull it out......my vagina hurt just watching it.

Ohhhh, yeeeeaaaaahhh!

I remember that film...we saw it in Health Class, 10th Grade.
Half the class threw up in the classroom, and the other half were making such memorable remarks as:

"Dude! They stuck salad tongs in that chick's pooder!"
"What do you mean, a baby can come out of THERE?!?!?"
"I never got MY dick to do that!" (No one would own up to saying that.)
"Is that....baby goo in there? Ewwwwwww!"

Women complain that puberty sucks for them.
But, men have it tough, too!

We don't have bleeding, unless we try something not meant to be tried on our bodies.
No, we have that awkward 1st erection, where we're not quite sure what's happening.
That's when our bodies say, "Shake hands with Mr. Happy!"

Women, on the other hand, have the quarter-operated pony at the supermarket.
Y'know, the one with the perfect action: 2 forward, 1 back, and just a tad to the side?

The bad thing about this, is just yesterday I saw a grown woman ride one of those things for about 1/2 an hour. (Waiting on a bus, I'd had some time on my hands, obviously)
Afterward, she got down, wiped the horse with a washcloth, and actually said, "I still respect you!"

I'm contemplating therapy for that, now.....

When I was five or six, I read a book called 'Where Do Babies Come From?' and I found it really fascinating. It had full colour illustrations. These days I have a book entitled 'The Complete Family Home Health Encyclopedia' and it has a couple of pages on pregnancy. At the moment, a worker at my house called Tina is pregnant.

I've always been like that.  The doc put me on B/C at age 13 because of it to try and "ease the pain".  It didn't really work then and it still doesn't work to this day ::)

My sister just so happened to be wearing white pants, and was at school, the very first time she started.  She also happened to be in class with the boy she was currently crushing on, and everyone saw.  She's still traumatized...
