Subject: 2024 Major League Baseball season

On Thursday of this week, all 30 MLB teams are scheduled to play! The Dodgers and Padres have already played two games against each other, in Korea, with the teams splitting that series.
Does anyone have any predictions/expectations for this season?

Well, both my Chicagoland teams lost today with mixed news.
For the White Sox (vs. Detroit), the good news is our starting pitcher Garrett Crochet (he's new at starting; when healthy in the past he was a bullpen guy) pitched really well. But the offense was silent and the Sox lost 1 - 0.
For the Cubs (vs. Texas), the really bad news is that ace Justin Steele went down with an apparent hamstring injury fielding a bunt. :( Will get an update after an MRI tomorrow. The Cubs battled but lost in extra innings, 4 - 3.
Incidentally the Phillies didn't play today (postponed).

Today, neither the Cubs nor White Sox played. Cubs fans are still nervously awaiting an update on our All Star ace Justin Steele, after his hamstring MRI, to learn the extent of his injury from yesterday.
The Phillies played today. They lost (vs. Atlanta). Of the three teams I root for, every one of them lost. :-\\

Dodgers won their first game at Dodger Stadium yesterday, 7-1 over the Cardinals!
And last night they won again!
Today’s game might not be played due to the threat of rain. We’ll see how the weather is come game time.

Justin Steele has a grade 1 hamstring strain and expected to miss all of April, minimum :( that will hurt the Cubbies for sure

My team had a chance to walk it off in the 9th, didn’t come through.
They had a chance to walk it off in the 10th (with the tying and goahead runs in scoring position), didn’t come through. :(
On the bright side, Yamamoto pitched well; he just had to settle for a no-decision.
Needless to say, the game was interrupted by rain in the 5th inning, but it eventually resumed. I had a feeling that would happen, due to the rain that has been forecasted in the greater Los Angeles area this weekend.

The White Sox, on the other hand, got swept. Expectations for them aren't high this year, but their starting pitching, in spite of their newness, has been decent so far. A good sign.

The one saving grace today was the Cubbies, with a solid win over the Rockies atop a stellar performance by newcomer on the mound Shota Imanaga in his memorable MLB debut. :D

Today the Cubbies squeaked out a 9-8 win over the Rockies (after blowing a big lead). The Phillies lost to the Reds, though.

So, there are no more undefeated teams in MLB as of today. Tigers (the last team with no losses entering today) split a doubleheader with the Mets (who had no wins entering today). However, there is one team remaining without any wins: the Marlins, who are goose-egg and 8. :o

Yeah, my parents had a good time at the game on Wednesday night with their guests; they decided to buy tickets for an upcoming Friday night game. So I’ll be going with them to the game right after I end my work for the day. (Therefore my posting activity will likely be very limited over the course of that day, unless I can get Wifi at the stadium.)

On the "my other teams" front, my poor hapless White Sox couldn't hang on to their lead yesterday (vs Royals) - they still only have 1 win. Whats worse is superstar Luis Robert Jr. is now on the IL, looks to be lengthy. And the Phillies lost again (vs Nationals); they're below .500 again. :-\\

Again the Dodgers scored twice as many runs as the Twins! (6-3 this time.) Tyler Glasnow pitched very well over 6 innings - he struck out 14, walked nobody, and allowed no runs - but two relievers gave up half the lead. Still, James Outman and Will Smith each hit a 3-run home run, giving Glasnow ample run support.
Can we complete the sweep tomorrow?

UGH! Rough outing for the Cubbies today. I admit I was worried upon hearing the pitching matchup of Hendricks (Cubs, not their ace) vs. Cease (Padres newly acquired ex-White Sox ace). :-\\ The White Sox also lost again (vs Guardians) but in inning 10.
The one good outcome is the Phillies - they won today vs. Cardinals.

All my fave teams lost yesterday: the Cubs (vs Mariners), the Phillies (vs Pirates) and White Sox (vs Reds). UGH! Bad baseball day for me! :(

It was bad for the Dudgers too! They took a 7-3 lead; Yamamoto pitched well over 5 innings, but the pitchers who replaced him did not hold the lead! >:( I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: the bullpen’s job is NOT to relinquish the lead, especially when the starter pitches well! What’s worse, we lost the game in the 10th.
On the plus side, Shohei Ohtani hit his 175th MLB home run to tie him with Hideki Matsui for most home runs by a Japanese-born MLB player.
Also, the Angels blanked the Redsox in Boston, 7-0.

And I just found out that starting pitcher Bobby Miller is gonna be on the I.L. for a while after not doing so well in his last start. :-\\ This might mean more bullpen games. :(

But my team won last night, in a game that started two hours late due to a rain delay. Starter Gavin Stone was perfect through 5 innings; we ultimately came out on top 5-2.

My Cubbies hung on today to squeak past the Mariners, 3 - 2. The ending was bizarre; a manager's challenge on a first base pickoff play ended up in a "safe" call being overturned to "out", which ended the game. Weird - but I'll take it! :)

Between toxic dysfunction (upper management) and a bad injury bug, they're just not currently equipped to win. :-\\ I think we fans knew from the start. The one silver lining is discovering we have some pitching, in the post-Dylan Cease era (I'm quite happy with Garrett Crochet, a pleasant surprise this year). But nobody is hitting the ball right now.

I'm happy to report my other two fave teams, the Cubs and Phillies, each won today in extra innings! :D
The good news is the Phillies won yesterday - they didn't need extra innings. Yay! The bad news is, the Cubs lost in extra innings. Ugh!

Unfortunately that did not happen. :-[
But I did have a good time at the stadium.
After the game, fans were treated to a special light show, with drones illustrating a history of the Dodgers franchise. That part was actually more interesting than the overall game. However, the game did have some good moments (such as the Dodgers tying the score to get Yamamoto off the hook).

The Phillies vs White Sox gsme was pretty interesting. The Phillies no-hit the Sox into the 8th inning, while themselves pounding out a big crooked number. Once the Philly bullpen came in, they mostly maintained their commanding lead. Until the top of the 9th. For whatever reason the Phillies wouldn't change pitchers, and the Sox found their offense, proceeding to pile on 5 runs and loading the bases. Finally, the Phillies went to the bullpen one more time, and finally got the last out. For such a big lead, that was nutso to Philly fans :o On the other hand that was probably a big deal to the Sox players.

Today was more conventional for both teams. The no-hit bid was nixed early. The Sox weren't exactly embarrassed, but the Phillies still prevailed. TBH that's just how I wanted it to go...
On the other hand, the Cubbies lost to the lowly Marlins - they split the series. :( I don't know if Hendricks can still handle his starter role, but I don't know what else to do, pitching-wise.

My team is idle today as they travel east for their first road trip involving teams in the Eastern Time Zone: first they go to Washington to play the Nationals, then to Toronto to play the Blue Jays. (Incidentally, the Nats used to be based in Canada, namely in Montreal, as the Expos, until 20 years ago. So the Dodgers are essentially going to play two franchises that have had ties to Canada.)

Today, my Chicago teams "flipped the script". The angry Red Sox slapped around and embarrassed my Cubbies by the unthinkable score of 17-0! :o
But my White Sox (vs Rays) astonished everyone, pulling a 10th inning walk-off home run to win 8 - 7! Two wins in a row! :D The hero was Andrew Benintendi, two home runs including the game winner, 6 RBIs. Major kudos, Benny!

So this is the first time ever that the Phillies have won consecutive games at Angel Stadium!
Also, even though the Angels are a semi-local team to me, I don’t follow them as much as the Dodgers. The Dodgers are my all-time favorite team. (Also, in 2002 when the Angels made their first ever World Series appearance, I rooted for them to win it.)

Good baseball day! Cubs (vs Brewers) and White Sox (vs Cardinals) both won 6 - 5! 8) For the Cubs, once again the bullpen almost blew it, but today they hung on. Even more odd was the Sox game - they had to endure a 3 hour rain delay - in order to get one last out in the 10th (tricky, as Cards had bases loaded).
Plus the Phillies handily took care of the Giants, 14 to 3! :D

Wouldn’t surprise me. That sorta thing tends to happen in runaway games.
Btw, later this month it’ll be 45 years since a game in which 45 total runs were scored (between the Phillies and Cubs). I once saw a showing of that game on MLB Network in 2011, and I don’t think any position players pitched in it. (I could look up the box score to find out.)

My beloved Boys In Blue just completed a sweep of the Miami Marlins - and a perfect homestand - this afternoon!! They won 3-1, in a game that took just under two hours to play! :) They are now 26 and 13 on the season. (That’s two wins for each loss, which puts them on pace for 108-54 lol.)

Today was a "flip the script" day for my teams.
The Phillies received payback for yesterday from a bunch of angry Blue Jays. Meanwhile the Cubbies were 1-hit by former White Sox ace Dylan Cease of the Padres, falling 3 - 0. * SIGH * :(
On the other hand, the White Sox salvaged an impressive road win from the Rays, which wins them the season series! :)

And this afternoon they made up the game, which the Dodgers won 5-2 in 10 innings!! Losing streak is over!

Corey Seager, in his first game at Dodger Stadium as a visiting player, has just hit a home run to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead. >:( But that was only the 4th inning.
And did I happen to mention, the Dodgers acquired Calvin Biggio from the Blue Jays today. He’s in tonight’s game at third base; he made a fielding error that eventually led to the aforementioned runs scoring. :-\\

My team lost the rubber game to the Rangers last night. :(
But tonight, in the series opener against the Royals (who are playing at Dodger Stadium for the first time since 2017), the Dodgers overcame a 3-0 deficit and won 4-3, in a game that took just over two hours to play! :)

On a positive note, my team won! The good news is that the Dodgers took the rubber game against the Royals, blanking them 3-zip. The bad news is that Mookie Betts suffered a fracture as he was hit by pitch, and it was pretty serious, so he’s gonna be out for a long while.

Kudos to SP Jonathan Cannon of the White Sox who threw an (almost) complete game shutout of the Astros! :D
The Cubbies went on to beat the Giants, and the Phillies edged the Padres! It's been a while since I could cheer all 3 teams.

Yes, after Heyward’s grand slam, Teoscar Hernandez hit a 3-run blast to put us ahead; we went on to win 11-9. I didn’t watch it in real time, because I thought they were gonna lose. I’m glad I was wrong about that! (However, I could not see any of the highlights on Quick Pitch because most of the show was taken up by the passing of Willie Mays.)

My team came out on top. The game was interrupted by rain in the top of the 7th (after LAD scored a pair of runs to break a scoreless tie) and it eventually resumed.

My team won again (sorry AG). This was game #81 for the Dodgers, which means they’ve played half their schedule already. Their record is 50-31, which puts them on pace for 100 wins; that’s exactly how they finished last season.

Plus the White Sox defeated the Bravos 1-0 in a makeup game that was originally scheduled for early April but rained out.

It was a seesaw affair during regulation, but my team really got busy in the extra innings. This game will be a memorable one in the Dodgers-Giants rivalry.

I can understand.
I only have one true favorite team: the Dodgers; and I always root in their favor. However, they got creamed in last nights game. :( (The Angels are semi-local to me, but they aren’t a contending team this year. In fact, they are tied with the Tigers for the longest postseason drought (that is, longest span without reaching the playoffs) at 10 years this year.)

I was essentially raised to be a Cubs/White Sox fan (some Chicagolanders find this wishy-washy; tough) due to my Dad's and other close relatives' cheering patterns (I think more other close relatives preferred the White Sox but Dad preferred the Cubs, watching and taking us to Cubs games; he cheered the White Sox too, though). Incidentally Mom didn't follow baseball (but then I was a "Daddy's girl").
I started rooting for the Phillies after I married an avid Phillies fan (who grew up around Philly). He eventually began to root for local teams too, first the White Sox then the Cubs, to my delight.
So now both of us root for all three. Simple, huh?

I started rooting for the Phillies after I married an avid Phillies fan (who grew up around Philly). He eventually began to root for local teams too, first the White Sox then the Cubs, to my delight.
So now both of us root for all three. Simple, huh?
Yup!
On this subject, I rooted for the White Sox to win the 2005 World Series so that they could break their curse (even though they defeated the Angels in the ALCS to get there). More importantly, I also cheered for the Cubbies to win the 2016 World Series (even though they defeated my team in the NLCS).

This is the Angels’ first visit to Wrigley Field since 2019; and in recent meetings between the Angels and Cubbies, the Cubs have dominated (except last year at Angel Stadium). (Including in 2016, their championship year.)

Watched the White Sox fall to the Pirates, 4 - 1. Garrett Crochet pitched superbly in his abbreviated start, but as usual the bullpen forked over the lead late.
In the "games we couldn't watch" category, the Phillies sadly fell to the lowly A's today 6 - 2. But the Cubbies (on Apple+) blanked the hated Cardinals 5 - 0!

I am disappointed with the Dudgers today. They were on track to win today's game, with a 9-4 lead heading into the bottom of the 9th, but manager Dave Roberts puts in this reliever they've called up from the minors - last name Vanasco - and he gives up three runs without recording an out! And the Tigers tied it up, thereby denying newcomer Wrobleski a win. (What the (blank) was Dave thinking?!) In the top of the 10th, they couldn't push the go-ahead run across; instead, they surrendered the winning run in the bottom of the 10th. >:( >:( >:(

And I just found out that next year’s schedule is hot off the press.. with opening day slated for March 27th. However, there will be an opening series in Japan on March 18 and 19, with the Dodgers and Cubs to face off. (Cubs will be the home team for both games; however, the teams will also play a pair of games at Wrigley Field in April.)

Tonight’s game (shown nationally on FOX) was a seesaw affair - there were several lead changes. But we came out on top in the 11th inning, 7-6! :)

Yeah. Dylan Cease is a good pitcher. The Dud-gers aren’t doing anything against him. On the flipside, veteran pitcher Clayton Kershaw was chased early (this is his second start this year, after missing the first half due to recovery from shoulder surgery).

Dodgers finally win another game!! They hand the Athletics a goose-egg in Oakland, 10-0! Six of those runs came in the 9th inning; and to close out the game, they had Kike Hernandez, a position player, pitch the bottom of the 9th.

The Cubbies took today's game against the Twinkies, wonderful! But the White Sox seemed determined to embark on their next losing streak. For the A's, it was "come from behind". UGH!

The bad news is that LAD starting pitcher River Ryan had to exit the game in the fifth inning with a 3-1 count to a Pirates batter; he apparently got hurt. :o On the flipside, the team outdueled Pittsburgh starter Paul Skenes (also a rookie pitcher), handing him only his second loss.

And they have done it!! The Dodgers complete a sweep of the Pirates!
…but not without the bullpen relinquishing the lead in the 8th inning after Tyler Glasnow pitched well. For the Pirates, Andrew McCutcheon hit two 2-run home runs, including one to tie the game at 4. It remained that way through the 9th inning. Finally, in the 10th, Pirates scored a run in the top of the frame, but the Dodgers scored a pair to walk it off!! Now they are going to have a happy flight to Milwaukee. :)

And my team can’t seem to play well tonight. They scored three runs in the 1st inning at Milwaukee, but the Brew Crew tied it up and eventually ahead on a fielding error. Now we’re running out of opportunities to do something good.
What’s worse, the Padres and D’backs won their respective games earlier today. If the Dudgers don’t win tonight, then the two aforementioned teams gain a game on the NL West lead. I don’t want either of those teams taking over.

Dbacks lose in Tampa (walkoff style; hence the Rays complete the sweep), and the Rockies edge the Padres! So the Dodgers increase their lead over both teams by a full game!!
I must also add: this was win #73 for the Dodgers, which means they will not lose 90 games this year.

They were down 3-0, but they overcame that deficit and ultimately went ahead 6-3 on a three-run pinch hit home run by Jason Heyward! The Dodgers went on to win by that score, thus giving them 9 straight home wins against the Mariners dating back to early 2015! :) :D (The Mariners have not won a game at Dodger Stadium since 2009.)

Yeah, he’s with the Pirates. I heard about that! This seems to be a thing for “runaway” or “landslide” games. A team that is far behind will send in a position player to pitch. Sometimes he’ll do fine!

But the Dodgers eventually took a 10-5 lead.. and it almost evaporated in the 9th inning. Fortunately they won 10-9.
So my team has a 5-game lead on both the Padres and Dbacks.

I also found out that the Cardinals’ win at Yankee Stadium today was the first time ever that the Cardinals defeated the Yankees in the Bronx since the 1964 World Series! IOW, it is the first-ever win for the Cardinals at any place named Yankee Stadium in the history of interleague play. (That is, regular season.)

The Cubbies just manhandled the Nationals, 14 - 1! A sweep! :D Half the runs came in the 9th. One commentary I must make - I seldom make a point of disparaging our opponents, but the way their defense played today, all the errors and miscues, I've seen better defense played in little league.

Ohtani tripled to knock in the first Dodger run, then scored on another hit, but the game went into extra innings, with the Dodgers prevailing in the 10th. In that inning, Ohtani was intentionally walked, but the next batter Mookie Bette hit a three-run home run to give the Dodgers a four-run cushion. And that proved to be enough for a 6-2 win. O0

My team is off today. Tomorrow they begin a new homestand, starting with the Cleveland Guardians (who currently lead the AL Central division).
The Arizona Diamondbacks lost to the San Francisco Giants this afternoon, so that increases the Dodgers lead by a half-game over them; the Padres are just getting started with their final game against the Tigers (and I sure hope the Tigers win).

The Dodgers scored half a dozen runs in the first inning of tonight’s game, chasing the Cleveland starter. They went on to win 7-2. By doing so, they regained a full game on the Padres, who lost at home to the Giants! (I have to root for the Giants this weekend because they are playing the Padres, who are currently chasing the Dodgers in the division race.)

Dodgers won the rubber game against the Guardians, 4-zip!! :D :) Jack Flaherty threw 7 1/3 shutout innings and the two relievers who succeeded him kept the shutout intact. Offensively, Shohei Ohtani hit his 46th home run of the year; he is now 4 home runs and 4 stolen bases away from 50/50!

I should also note that the Giants narrowly beat the Padres, 7-6, to push them 6 games back of the division lead. Plus the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Houston Astros 12-6, so they remain 6 1/2 back.
The Dodgers still hold the top seed in the National League, as the Phillies got pummeled by the Marlins.

Dodgers hit 4 home runs in the first inning to take an early lead, but it was kinda up and down from there. I got a little nervous in the 9th when Mike Kopech allowed the first three Cub batters to reach. But he wiggled his way out of it!

I heard about it too, after it happened. I was at work while the game was going on, so obviously I couldn’t watch it live. However, as I drove home, I wanted to see if I could catch it on the radio (something I don’t usually like to do, because I prefer to see a game)… and I heard the announcer mention the fact that Ohtani became the first member of the “51/51” club in MLB history!

Phillies were handed their 63rd loss today (courtesy of the Mets), which means they will not win 100 games this year. The Dodgers are the only team left with fewer than 63 losses, so if they lose again, then no team will have triple-digit wins this year.

Tonight’s home plate umpire is making some very bad calls, including some borderline pitches against the Dodgers. This may be preventing them from winning the game. I don’t want them to lose first place in the NL West.

They are still battling the Dodgers (who are idle today) for the top NL seeds. Those two teams are likely to finish at #1 and #2 in some order, and hence have first-round byes. But the NL West crown is still up for grabs because the Padres are still alive in that race.

Ooh yes. Maybe it will. If they lose two of three, they will equal the 1962 Mets win total, but have two more losses (for a total of 40 and 122; the 62 Mets musta had two rained-out games). I remember in 2003 the Detroit Tigers were close to the 120-loss mark but finished 43 and 119.

Dodgers finish the regular season with 98 wins, the most of any team, with a 2–1 victory over the Colorado Rockies. (For the Rockies, it was the final game for longtime outfielder Charlie Blackmon.) LAD will have home field advantage throughout the postseason. Hopefully they won’t fizzle out too soon.

Now all the games are in the books, and the postseason stage is set. The Mets and Braves made up their two games that were rained out last week due to hurricane. Mets won the first game (which was a seesaw affair in late innings); the Braves won the second game. So this means that the Braves get the middle wildcard (and will face the Padres); the Mets get the bottom wildcard spot (and will face the Brewers); Dbacks are out. (Had one team swept the doubleheader, that team would have taken the middle wildcard, the other team would’ve been eliminated, and the Dbacks would have won the bottom wildcard; this is because both the Mets and Braves hold tiebreakers over the Arizonas.)

Overall it was a seesaw affair; and while I’m not really rooting for either of those teams, I think they played a great game. I even watched the last part of it.
The other NLDS game, however, was one-sided from the getgo. The worst part - at least from the Dodgers fans point of view, was in the first inning, when Jurikson Profar robbed Mookie Betts of a solo home run. Things went south from there. (And the teams are traveling southwards to San Diego, where the series will resume on Tuesday.)

But Cleveland got themselves back into the contest with a 10th inning walk-off home run! And that after the Yankees led 5 - 3 into the bottom 9th, even after 2 outs (another late HR). Exciting to watch!

But Cleveland got themselves back into the contest with a 10th inning walk-off home run! And that after the Yankees led 5 - 3 into the bottom 9th, even after 2 outs (another late HR). Exciting to watch!

And I didn’t really miss anything.. the Mets scored a whole buncha runs to beat the Dudgers 12-6, so the series is gonna return to Dodger Stadium on Sunday. Hopefully we can get it done then and there.

So, for the first time since 1981, the Dodgers and Yankees will face off in the World Series. (And the 12th time overall.)

Dodgers narrowly win Game Two!!
They took a 4-1 lead into the ninth, but things got a little shaky when Treinen gave up a run and loaded the bases, but Vesia was brought in to get the final out…on one pitch. So, Yamomoto gets the win! O0
They are now halfway to the title.

Yes, Ohtani was caught stealing to end the seventh inning; in the process, he got hurt, injuring his left shoulder. The question remains as to whether he’ll be able to play in Game Three on Monday night in NY. (If he can’t, then someone else will have to fill the DH spot. And if he can’t play in the remaining games, he might have to go on the IL and be replaced on the roster by Kiermaier. It’s uncertain at this point, although the updates I saw on the postgame indicate optimism.)

I just read where the preliminary tests they did sounded optimistic, but he's having an MRI today. If Ohtani can't go Monday they might DH Freddie Freeman, according to what I read. Hoping for the best.

I’m hoping for the best too. His left shoulder got dislocated while he was sliding.
If Freeman goes into the DH role, then Muncy could play first base, Kiki Hernandez could play third base, and maybe Andy Pages could be in center field. Of course, the batting order would have to be changed accordingly as well, with Betts in the leadoff spot.

They were one strike away from shutting out the Yankees, but Alex Verdugo (an ex-Dodger) hit a two run homer to cut the Dodgers’ 4-0 lead in half. But the next batter grounded out.
If we win tomorrow, then we sweep!

One thing I noticed about this series is that the Dodgers have scored twice as many runs as the Yankees in each game thus far: 6-3, 4-2, and 4-2.
Can they finish off a sweep tonight?

The floodgates opened up in the 8th inning. >:( I wonder if the bad bullpen pitching gave the EE the upper hand.
During the game, a graphic was shown indicating that in World Series history, there have been 24 instances of a team going up 3-games-to-none (not counting this year). Of those, 21 have ended in sweeps, while the other 3 were finished in five games. So, hopefully this year will be the 4th instance of win-win-win-loss-win.
I would hate to see the EE do to the Dodgers what the Redsox did to the EE in the ALCS 20 years ago. IOW, it would be a cryin shame if the Dodgers squandered a golden opportunity.

Rookie Of The Year awards were announced today; both winners were starting pitchers: Paul Skenes of the Pirates (NL) and Luis Heel of the Yankees (AL).
This is the first time since 1981 in which both Rookies Of The Year were starting pitchers (the winners that year were Dave Righetti of the NYY (although he later found success in the bullpen) and Fernando Valenzuela of the LAD).
