Subject: 2023 Major League Baseball Season
Written By: nally on 03/29/23 at 11:14 pm
The 2023 MLB regular season starts on Thursday March 30th...and for the first time ever, will feature every team playing every team! That's right, each team will have 29 opponents, since interleague play was expanded to 46 games per team (each team will play a rival from its corresponding division 4 times - two at home and two away - and 3 games against each of the other 14 opposite-league teams; for example, the Dodgers and Angels will play a pair of games against each other at Dodger Stadium, and a pair of games against each other at Angel Stadium). To compensate for this, each team will face each of its division rivals for 13 games instead of 19. This will make for a "balanced" schedule.
Does anyone have any predictions for this year?

I'm surprised no one has responded to this thread yet. :-\\ What gives??
Anyways, my team (L.A. Dodgers) seemed like they were falling behind early against the Arizona d'backs, but they did take the lead in the 5th inning. But they received news today that starting pitcher Ryan Pepiot (who was supposed to replace an injured Anthony Gonsolin in the starting rotation) would be placed on the injury list today, due to hurting himself in his last spring training start. The team called up Michael Grove (who has mainly been spending time in the minors; in this year's spring training he was competing for a rotation spot) to replace Pepiot.

In last nights Dodger game, Trayce Thompson hit 3 home runs - a grand slam, a three-run shot, and a solo homer (8 total runs batted in) to give the team a 10-1 victory over the Arizonas. (One headline summed it up as “Uno Dos Trayce!”; another one spelled out “TRES Thompson!”)

Today, Noah Syndergaard pitched well in his Dodgers debut. But he couldn’t pick up a win because he didn’t get adequate run support, and one of his successors surrendered the go-ahead run to Arizona. As a result, we ended up splitting the opening 4-game set with them. :-\\ (Hey, it’s better than losing the series.)

Dodgers bounced back to beat the Cubbies 9-4. Once again, my team is back to the .500 mark. Seems like they’re on a seesaw cycle; they win, they lose. They’re hot n cold (like the title of a certain Katy Perry song lol). What they need to do is win consecutive games (preferably at least 3 in a row) to have a true winning record and have a shot at the postseason.

Tampa Rays now up to 19 wins and only 3 losses this season!! Moreover, their win today gives them 13 home wins in as many home games! (I think they're the only team that has not yet lost a home game yet this year.) This ties the 2009 L.A. Dodgers for most home game wins to begin a season in the Modern Era.

Woohoo!! Dodgers take the rubber game of the series in San Diego against the Padres! However, in the 9th they were down to their final out, but they didn't throw in the towel just yet.
In the 9th inning, LAD was trailing 2-1; Mookie Betts stepped to the plate with two out and nobody on; he hit a towering shot off of Joshua Hader, thus tying the score. And after the Pods completed a scoreless 9th, the game went to extras. Top of the 10th, LAD scored three runs. Bottom of the 10th, Evan Phillips (the Dodgers' presumed new closer) retired the Pods to close out a 5-2 victory.
Now the Dodgers can take a happy flight to Milwaukee!

Yup. After they blew a lead twice in the late innings (of regulation), I was so hoping they'd walk it off somehow. But in the top of the 10th, when reliever Philip Bickford gave up the go-ahead run with no out, I wasn't too happy; plus, I had to get to bed because the game was running late. But when I woke up this morning, I found out that they came through in the 12th (with Bickford pitching a scoreless 11th and 12th innings).
Let's hope they can continue their winning ways tonight! (And tomorrow.) (I'd like to see them extend their winning streak against the Twinkies in general. Currently it stands at 11, dating back to 2014.)

Yeah; and isn’t STL still in last place in the NL Central? I know they still have a losing record.
In the AL East, however, all five teams have winning records, including the last-place Redsox, who are in San Diego this weekend playing the Padres. I’m rooting for the Red Sox to win that game, although the Pods already have a losing record of their own.

One of the key moments in that game was a grand slam by a Venezuelan-born rookie shortstop named Tucupita Marcano. Naturally, the lead announcer called it as it happened. Today was also a good day for both Chicago teams...
Yesterday was another good day for Chicago teams :D
The Cubs turned in a fine performance behind the reliable Marcus Stroman to win 4 - 2. The White Sox got another brilliant performance from Michael Kopech, beating the Guardians 6 - 0. As he had a terrible start to the year (and an inconsistent last year), the trend of Kopech having excellent outings is a harbinger of good things to come for the Sox; as Cease has been consistently good, if Kopech can turn it on (and Giolito has been decent his last few outings), I'd say the pitching rotation is finally pulling together (don't know about Lance Lynn yet, though). With the bullpen's recent improvements, perhaps it's been too early to count the team out after all.
In other good news, the Phillies beat the Diamondbacks yesterday 6 - 5.

Dodgers are in Tampa Bay this weekend for a “2020 World Series rematch” with the Rays. Tonight’s game did not go well for my team; I was kinda expecting the Rays to have the upper hand since they entered play today with the best record in all of MLB.

Today, sadly the Cubs lost again to the Reds, big, 9 - 0. Thankfully the White Sox had a good day against the Tigers, dominating them 12 - 3. The Phillies also won today over the Braves, 6 - 4. (My one beef is today's Sox game was only available on Apple+ streaming - or the radio >:(.)

Yeah, that can be an inconvenience because many people don’t have it. And speaking of streaming services, this Sunday’s Dodgers-Rays game is gonna be on Peacock!! >:( I don’t have a subscription to that.
But I do have the MLB app on my iPhone, so I can follow the game progress on that whenever I want.

But today my team battled back, and narrowly won.
In fact, today’s game was a rematch of the starting pitchers in Games 1 and 5 of the 2020 World Series: Clayton Kershaw for the Dodgers and Tyler Glasnow for the Rays. However, neither one received a decision today.

Yup, the LAD scored a half-dozen runs in the 1st inning (they batted around), and ultimately winning 8-4. Best of all, Clayton Kershaw finally gets a win against the NYY.
The first time he faced them, in 2010, he was in line for a "W", but the bullpen effed it up. He settled for two additional no-decisions and one loss since then. But today, he finally beat 'em.

The White Sox won today, but it was utterly weird. Bottom of the 10th, the Tigers managed to load the bases for Tim Anderson to bat, with two outs. Tiger pitcher Cisneros hurled a wild pitch that scored Moncada for the win. But the festivities were subdued, as that wild pitch hit umpire Cory Blaser squarely in the mask - immediate concerns for his condition rightfully ensued. :(

Regarding the time difference, the first pitch (start of play) on Saturday will be just after 6pm, and 3pm on Sunday. So for those viewing in New York (5 hours difference) the start 1pm and 10am respectively, for those in California, Saturday at 10am and Sunday at 7am. Those in states in-between will be between those times. Good luck in viewing live.
If I do get to view live, I will not make any reference to the current score, happenings, or final result, in case others are view highlights later on the day, and I do not spoil it for them.
I have just remembered that my baseball viewing will be interrupted by Cat Stevens/Yusuf live at Glastonbury on Sunday.

Yes, the London Series is this weekend - Cubs vs Cardinals! (With the Cardinals as the “home” team.)
Hmmm, didn't know the Cardinals were the home team. Could be a slight Cubbies disadvantage, although the Cards aren't "home" home. Hopefully it's not a factor :-\\

Thus Saturday's game should air at noon for us, and Sunday's at 9am. Don't believe we can watch either full game. We should be able to listen to Saturday's game on the radio based on current plans; on Sunday we could watch the end of it once we get home from church around 10:30 or 11.

Well, anytime a game is played at a stadium that is home to neither team, one of the two teams must be designated as the "home" team.
Last time there was a London Series, in 2019, it was Yankees at Red Sox.
And in 2014, the Dodgers and Diamondbacks opened the season at Sidney Cricket Ground in Australia, with the D'backs as the home team. (Dodgers won both games.)
And there have been some Mexico serieses as well - most recently at the end of April this year (between the Giants and Padres; Padres were designated as the home team, which did make sense since the Padres play in San Diego, which is close to the Mexican border).
And there has also been a Field Of Dreams game in several recent years.

I'm pretty sure it's still Busch Stadium (although it did replace an old stadium with the very same name 17 years ago). And yep, they would only be playing 79 games there this year. (However, the two games of the London Series will of course count as home games for them.)
Spoiler alert: There will be a London Series next year as well, with Mets and Phillies, slated for June 8 and 9.

Well, he made it to the semifinals, but lost to Arozarena. Still, Bob did well overall.
Mookie Betts, of my team, hit the fewest longballs of all the competitors.
The final round was Arozarena vs Vladdy Guerrero Jr. Vlad went first and got 25, then Arozarena looked like he was gonna catch Vlad.. but fell short by two. So, congrats to Vladimir Guerrero Junior. As for Chicagoland teams, yesterday only the Cubs played (vs. the Nationals), and they lost. They came roaring back today, winning big! But the White Sox lost today to the Mets (though they made it close at the end).
Yeah, the Cubbies also won by a football-esque score: 17-3! :D

In today's Cubs vs. White Sox matchup (AKA the Crosstown Classic) the Cubs defeated the White Sox 7 - 3. Mixed feelings from me, as you'd expect. In a way it's probably better for the Cubs to be winning, as they have a slightly better shot. (Although TBH neither team looks postseason-bound at this point.)

I hope my team (LAD) doesn't drop another one tonight. I would hate for them to face a sweep tomorrow. (To date, the Dudgers have never been swept at home by an interleague opponent other than the Angels.)

Even so, each time they have 62 wins entering a game, even with a winning record, I am hopeful that they win it. I know it’s highly unlikely that they would end a season with a double-digit losing streak. For the record, the Dodgers have never lost 100 games in any season (not even in Brooklyn). Score was actually 13-7. I realised my mistake after I made my original post, which I just amended. I just know that the Padres scored 5 runs in the 3rd inning off of Anthony Gonsolin (but he settled down after that). I had forgotten that they scored two additional runs. I also know that the Dodgers answered the Padres' 5-run outburst with an 8-run inning (which included a grand slam by Mookie Betts!).

This weekend, the southern portion of California is being threatened by Tropical Storm Hillary (as discussed in the weather thread)... and all three MLB teams whose home stadiums are located in the southern portion of the state - the Dodgers, Angels, and Padres - each have home serieses this weekend, including Sunday games. And on Sunday, plenty of rain is expected to fall. For this reason, each team has moved its respective Sunday game up to Saturday for a day-night doubleheader: Marlins at Dodgers, Rays at Angels, and Dbacks at Padres. IOW, they're "preponing" their respective games in anticipation of bad weather conditions.
This means that the Dodgers will have a rained-out home game for the first time since April 17th 2000 - a span of 23+ years!

One game did not get played today: Reds at Angels. Even though the Hurricane/Tropical storm Hillary is done passing through, the teams already had made the decision to postpone the game, and intend to play it as part of a doubleheader on Wednesday.

In yesterday's action, Dodgers dropped the opener in Cleveland in late innings. :(
And today, they only got two innings in before inclement weather interrupted the game (leading 3-1). The game has been suspended and will resume tomorrow at noon Eastern time (which is 9am in my timezone). So tomorrow they're essentially gonna play a doubleheader (the continuation of tonight's scheduled game plus tomorrow's scheduled game in full).

So they sweep what's tantamount to a doubleheader in Cleveland (winning the series). Now it's on to Boston to play the Red Sox (who did a huge number on the Houston Asterisks today!).

So, the postseason stage is set. The final spots were clinched yesterday, on Closing Day. (Particularly in the AL West division; the Asterisks and Rangers finished in a tie (90 wins and 72 losses), but the Stros hold the tiebreaker because they won the season series against the Rangers.)
Wildcard Series begins tomorrow, in both the AL and NL.
National League:
Arizona D'backs (#6) at Milwaukee Brewers (#3); winner will face the L.A. Dodgers (#2) in the NLDS
Miami Marlins (#5) at Philadelphia Phillies (#4); winner will face the Atlanta Braves (#1) in the NLDS
American League:
Toronto Bluejays (#6) at Minnesota Twins (#3); winner will face the Houston Asterisks (#2) in the ALDS
Texas Rangers (#5) at Tampa Bay Rays (#4); winner will face the Baltimore Orioles (#1) in the ALDS

I didn’t think it would. They were in a very deep hole; it did not seem the least bit promising at all. And as much as I hate to say this, I think something must be bothering Kersh; I mean, he’s had plenty of IL stints this year; he may be approaching the end of the line after 16 seasons. (Still, he deserves to get into the Hall of Fame when he becomes eligible.)

I'm just glad to not see the Astros for the 3rd straight year, or the Phillies for the 2nd.

Agreed on the first part. Although if the Phillies had won last night (which would have made a Phillies-Rangers World Series), I would be fine with either them or the Rangers winning. But since that didn’t happen, I am definitely going to root for the Rangers. Their current manager, Bruce Bochy, has been to the World Series before (three times as manager of the Giants, winning it in all three tries; also, he got there 25 years ago as manager of the Padres, who were swept by the Yankees).

WS Game One: Rangers scored first with a pair of runs in the first, but now they’re behind 5-3 in the eighth inning. :-\\

Wow! Rangers tied it up with a 2-run home run in the 9th by Corey Seager, and in the 11th, Adolis Garcia walks it off with a solo home run!

Game Two has started; Dbacks have struck first. >:( They got two in the top of the fourth inning, and the Rangers have not yet scored. And the starting pitcher for the Rangers, Jordan Montgomery, hasn’t lost yet this postseason.

Yep, it seems like the Rangers don’t have the momentum tonight. Demonbacks lead 4-1 in the eighth inning now. :-\\ Jordan Montgomery will no longer be unbeaten if this holds up.

It’s over. Things got ugly in the last two innings. AZ takes this one 9-1. 8-P
This means there will be three games in Chase Field. But hey, the Rangers have not lost a road game yet this postseason; they’re 8-0 as the visiting team. So if they get their way, they could win the series there on Wednesday night. (But that’s not a foregone conclusion.)

Texas bounces back to win Game Three, 3-1. They retake the series lead, 2 games to 1! :)

Yep, they scored 5 in the second inning; let’s see if they can score more!
They lost their star outfielder Adolis Garcia to injury, but I’m glad the other players are stepping up.

Yes!! Only one win away from their first WS title in franchise history!
They were up 11-1 at one point in the game...but in the late innings, the Arizonas started chipping away at that lead...and ultimately reduced it to 11-7. (And it would've been a cryin' shame if the lead had ultimately evaporated.) But the important thing is that the Rangers hung on to win and get one step closer to the championship.

So far there is no score in the third inning (as I'm typing this post). However, Texas starter Nathan Eovaldi hasn't been all that great, even in Game One.

Rangers broke through in the sixth inning with one run, and they still lead 1-0 in the eighth.

Corey Seager received MVP honors for the second time in his career, becoming the fourth player ever to win more than one World Series MVP award (and the second to do so with more than one team, joining Reggie Jackson). Koufax did it twice in the 1960s (both times with the Dodgers); Bob Gibson twice in the 1960s (both times with the Cardinals); Jackson twice in the 1970s (with the Athletics in 73 and the Yankees in 77); and now Seager twice in the 2020s (Dodgers in 2020; Rangers in 2023).

O0 Good for Corey Seager!
It should also be duly noted that he’s the first player to win World Series MVP in both the NL and AL!
