Speculation about the fate of the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo has been rife and some athletes have called for them to be postponed but the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said they could still take place as planned. World Athletics chief Lord Sebastian Coe has told BBC Sport he believes that is the right decision, for now. "Let's not make a precipitous decision when we don't have to four months out," he said. Events were "changing by the hour" but it was "not a decision that has to be made at the moment". However, he added that "anything" was possible.

I think you are correct. There 2000 was still a leap year, for "any year that is divisible by 4 and 400 is a Leap Year. For Ex. 400 AD, 800 AD, 1200 AD, 1600 AD, 2000 AD, 2400 AD, 2800 AD and so on. ... Since 2100 is divisible by 100 it needs to be divisible by 400 as well in order to be a leap year, which it's not." Actually, this is the first time since 1944 that the Olympics Games won't be held in a proper year. The reason that they weren't held in 1944 was due to WW2 (and for that reason, they were cancelled).

Written By: Philip Eno on 02/25/21 at 4:46 am
The organisers of the Tokyo Olympics have confirmed that the Games' torch relay will begin next month as planned, but are asking spectators to restrain themselves and will keep a close eye on overcrowding.
The relay is due to start in the last week of March, after being delayed because of the pandemic.
"The infection situation will vary from area to area, so we need to take that into account and it will be very important to have a meticulous approach," the Games' newly appointed President Seiko Hashimoto told reporters.
Spectators will be required to wear masks and only attend sections of the relay taking place near their home.
"They must support with applause or by using distributed goods rather than by shouting or cheering," guidelines say, adding social distance must be maintained.
The organising committee says the event will be broadcast live to encourage people to watch at home, but has warned it could be suspended if crowds become too large.
The relay is due to start in Fukushima - scene of the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster - and is set to visit each of Japan's 47 prefectures over four months.

As the Tokyo Olympics draws closer, there continues to be a big backlash against holding the games from locals.
There are concerns that holding the Games could lead to further Covid cases.
Only a quarter of the population has had at least one Covid vaccination. On Wednesday, Tokyo reported 920 new cases.
Tokyo is currently under a state of emergency – under the restrictions, bars and restaurants have to limit the sale of alcohol and close early. The measures also cap the number of audience members at events.
On Wednesday, the Olympic torch relay in Tokyo was cancelled over fears it could cause cases to surge.
Only the leg in the remote Ogasawara islands, south of Tokyo, will go ahead as planned, officials said.
Over the weekend, a woman was arrested after she apparently attempted to kill the flame with a water gun. She was pictured aiming the water pistol at the flame while shouting “No Olympics! Stop the Games!”.
People in Japan have taken to the streets in recent months calling for the Olympics to be cancelled or postponed.
Several sources told Reuters news agency on Wednesday that Japan is considering banning all spectators from the Games. Overseas spectators are already banned and the capacity for domestic spectators was set at 50% with a maximum capacity of 10,000.
But officials told Kyodo news agency the capacity could be limited to 5,000 if Tokyo’s state of emergency continues.

Sarah Storey put in another world record-breaking performance on her way to claiming her 15th Paralympic title - Britain's first gold of Tokyo 2020.
She beat team-mate Crystal Lane-Wright in the final to retain her C5 3,000m individual pursuit crown, after beating her own world best in qualifying.
The 43-year-old is just one behind Mike Kenny's British record of 16 golds.
There was also silver for tandem pair Steve Bate and Adam Duggleby in the B 4,000m pursuit.
Bate and Duggleby were defending champions but the Dutch pair of Tristan Bangma and Patrick Bos, who set a world record in qualifying, caught the Britons in the final.
