Following an ECB Board meeting, the following points system and rule changes have been approved for the LV= County Championship and are effective from 2010.

Teams will receive 16 points for a win and 3 for a draw (14 points for a win and 4 for a draw in recent years).
Bonus points remain unchanged (a maximum of 5 batting points and 3 bowling points available during each side's first innings) but the threshold for achieving them has reduced to 110 overs (from 120 overs in 2009).
The use of the heavy roller will be banned after the commencement of the match.

The changes have been approved in an effort to encourage and incentivise positive cricket throughout the season as well as maintaining and promoting the preparation of good cricket pitches.

A full list of regulations for 2010 will be available in due course.

I must admit I never knew this. In an attempt to remove the (very unusual) dismissal-type of "timed out" in Twenty20 cricket (which has never actually come to pass), if the batsman is not on the field within 90 seconds, the bowler is actually allowed to bowl the ball to the stumps with nobody there to defend them...

An intriguing twist on an oft-unthought-of rule.

Essex cricket players Danish Kaneria and Mervyn Westfield have been arrested following an investigation into betting irregularities.

An Essex Police spokesman said the men had been arrested on Friday, but released on bail.

The allegations relate to spot-fixing, a practice in which money is placed on individual details of a match.

It is believed that the match in question was a Pro40 win against Durham in September 2009.

Essex Cricket Club confirmed that the arrested men were Pakistan leg-spinner Kaneria, 29, and 22-year-old pace bowler Westfield.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "Two men from Chelmsford have been arrested in connection with a police investigation into first class domestic cricket match irregularities.

"The investigation began in March 2010 following allegations received about two Essex county cricket players.

"On Friday 14 May, two men aged 22 and 29 were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit fraud and both were released on police bail until Wednesday 15 September pending further inquiries."

Both men will be able to continue playing cricket until 15 September, meaning Kaneria will be available for Pakistan's Test series against England.

Kaneria has competed in more than 50 Test series for Pakistan during his career.

Broad needs five more wickets to complete his 1000-100 double. He could yet be the fourth man to do so in the same Test, after Kapil Dev, John Bracewell and Shaun Pollock. It's fair to say that Bracewell, with 1001 runs and 102 wickets, rather dribbled over the line.

OUT, 53.3 mph, bowled him first ball after tea! Or has it? Butt is standing his ground here... He thinks the ball rebounded onto the stumps off Prior's gloves, and they've asked the third umpire to have another look at this. Clean bowled, and he's got to go! What a ball to start with, Swann delivered from round the wicket, landing it on middle and leg and ripping it past the edge of Butt's bat as he stood rooted to the crease
