Subject: NHL Playoffs Round 2
Written By: skittlesking on 04/23/08 at 12:06 am
The field is down to 8
In the West
1) Detroit Redwings 4-2
2) San Jose Sharks 4-3
3) Minnesota Wild 2-4 (Eliminated by Colorado in Round 1)
4) Anaheim Ducks 2-4 (Eliminated by Dallas in Round 1)
5) Dallas Stars 4-2
6) Colorado Avalanche 4-2
7) Calgary Flames 3-4 (Eliminated by San Jose in Round 1)
8 ) Nashville Predators 2-4 (Eliminated by Detroit in Round 1)
In the East
1) Montreal Canadiens 4-3
2) Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0
3) Washington Capitals 3-4 (Eliminated by Philadelphia in Round 1)
4) New Jersey Devils 1-4 (Eliminated by New York R in Round 1)
5) New York Rangers 4-1
6) Philadelphia Flyers 4-3
7) Ottawa Senators 0-4 (Eliminated by Pittsburgh in Round 1)
8 ) Boston Bruins 3-4 (Eliminated by Montreal in Round 1)
NEW SERIES!!!
1) Detroit Redwings VS 6) Colorado Avalanche
Exciting matchups happening all over this year, after Montreal VS Boston in Round 1 of the east, along with New Jersey/New York, Minnestoa/Colorado, Detroit/Nashville, Anaheim/Dallas, I thought Round 2 would fail to measure up. But the recent rivalry between Detroit and Colorado makes the feisty battle between Montreal and Boston look like child's play. I think this series will go to 7 games easily, and I think that it could go either way, but having two hall of fame bound goal tenders and the strength of the Detroit line up makes the Redwings the favorites here. Joel Quennevile is a great coach, and was several times able to turn what should have been mediocre St. Louis Blues teams into true contenders, but it'd take a miracle for them to pull this one off, Redwings in 7
2) San Jose Sharks VS 5) Dallas Stars
Alright Turco, you've proven me wrong, you are a fully capable goal-tender, likewise Nabakov surprised me struggling like he did in Round 1. Dallas eliminated the defending champs in Round 1, but San Jose is a stronger and more confident team. I don't see the offense flair in Dallas that San Jose possess. . .so I have to give this one to the Sharks, this series is between two bitter rivals, so every night will be a battle. Dallas is better defensively, and matches up well, but I think the Sharks goal tending will have little trouble with Dallas' offensive powers, especially after having to battle through Calgary the way they did, Sharks in 6
1) Montreal Canadiens VS 6) Philadelphia Flyers
I think Montreal is a strong team, but I don't see them as the true team to beat in this years playoffs, same can be said about Philadelphia, yet one of these two will be in the Eastern Conference finals. Philadelphia battled Washington, who entering the playoffs were so hot and on such a streak that I honestly saw them pulling a 2004 Lighting or 05 Hurricane out, and Philadelphia stopped them dead in their tracks. Boston struggled just to make the playoffs, and Montreal barely got by them. I think Philadelphia has more grit and heart in this playoff match up, but It's not going to be easy to pull an upset of the Canadiens, not that the Caps were easy, but Philly--I'm going on a long shot here and saying you'll be the upset of Round 2, Flyers in 7, but it could go either way
2) Pittsburgh Penguins VS 5) New York Rangers
Well, Pittsburgh first took on the team that knocked them out last year, now they face their bitter division rival, and long time foe New York Rangers. Both these teams slaughtered their first round opponents. In fact, of the 8 matches, these were the only two settled in less than 6 games. They are lucky to be facing each other as they need a bigger test to move forward towards Stanley. As long as Pittsburgh doesn't underestimate New York, they should pull out a victory, but the Rangers are not Ottawa. They have real star power, and their blue line is solid, I'm going to say Pens in 6

Being a Flyers fan I have to have faith that the Orange and Black can pull
off a miracle and not only get to the finals but win it.
Being a realist I don't see the Flyers making it to the finals. Should they not make it there is no team that I would
want to see win but there are a few that I would love to see lose; they are:
Penguins: Pretty Boy Crosby is enough reason to hate this team.
Rangers: I'm from the Philadelphia area, it's a birthright to hate anything New York.
Red Wings: I'm tired of Detroit, sick to death of Hasek and Chelios time to move on from this team.

Well the anti-Crosby could also be the Philadelphia Area thing:) I'm rooting against Detroit also (they are my home team Blues arch-nemesis), Though I can't see them losing to the Avs realistically, but odder things have happened.
I wouldn't count Philly out, the East was a pretty level field, I think Ottawa was the only one in the playoffs in the East who had no shot of making the finals.
I personally think the finals will end up being Sharks VS Pens, but I could see Redwings or Sharks VS anyone from the East realistically (Sorry Dallas and Colorado, but I honestly think that the Redwings or Sharks are going to the finals) I'm not counting anyone out though.

Yeah, the Flyers do have a chance but it's kind of tough when you have to play the refs as well.
I'm adding the Canadiens to my list of teams I hope lose should the Flyers lose the series because
their fans show a lot of class by throwing a beer on on Richards in the penalty box. Especially since
Richards shouldn't have been in the box in the first place.
Chalk one up to the refs, a two goal gift to the Canadiens. >:( >:(

What is it with people and their obsession with blaming the refs every time the Habs win? How did Richards not deserve to be in the box on that play? I guess since the Flyers won tonight the check the refs got from the Canadiens hasn't cleared yet. Tonight the Canadiens ran into a hot goaltender, and that is the ONLY reason the Flyers evened the series up tonight.

Kind of funny that the only people in the hockey world who think it was a legitimate call are Canadiens fans. ::)
The penalty was kneeing but if you look at the replay you will see Richards lead with his shoulder, a legal check.
Look Refs blow calls , we've all seen it. I'm not in the habit of blaming refs for wins or losses because the calls usually
even out for all teams. When two blown calls in one game lead directly to two goals and the team wins by one, yeah,
the ref is responsible and should be held accountable. Had the situation been reversed and the Flyers were on the
receiving end of the two goal gift I would have said the same thing.

Yeah, you are right, he did lead with his shoulder. And when Kovalev made the move to avoid the hit, out came Richards' knee. If you can look at the replays from all angles and NOT see the knee on knee, then I am sorry but it is you who is the only one calling it a legitimate hit.
As for the fan throwing beer on Richards in the box. I don't believe it was beer. It had to be water because no one in their right mind in Montreal would even THINK about throwing away a beer they just spent $10 on :o

Oh well...it was only the first game. Of course, the Dallas Stars are the team that vanquished the Ducks...hopefully they won't do the same to the Sharks.

Hmm keeping with the topic of class. The Philadelphia fans prove once again that they are the classiest in all of sports by booing the canadian national anthem ::) No surpise here though. This from a fan base that booed Santa Claus.
I wonder how the canadian players on the Flyers feel about that.

Well, I won't make a generalized statement about that (as once at a Blues game against Calgary, two fans of the Flames were sitting behind us booing the American Anthem) but I will say that I think it's disgraceful to boo either anthem and that I don't think that either Canada or America should ever boo at the other countries anthem.

I actually hadn't been following the playoffs this round; I had other things on my plate. But I did happen to see last night that the Sharks avoided a sweep by beating the Dallas Stars to stay alive. If the Sharks don't survive, then I'll just pick a different team to root for.

New York Rangers 3, Pittsburgh 0
Detroit 8, Colorado 2
Well, I think it would be an understatement to say that most people saw Detroit eliminating Colorado, however I did NOT see them sweeping the Avalanche, particularly an Avalanche team that had knocked off a Minnesota team that was so strong in round 1. . .that puts me at 7 for 9 with this one correct. 8-2? Well, if the blood between these teams wasn't boiling before, I know it is now. . .ouch. Nice job on the Rangers part staving off elimination. . .
