Subject: Soccer World Cup 2006

Written By: Bobo on 06/09/06 at 1:38 pm

I've just watched the first match, one of the best opening matches to any tournament I've ever seen, in Germany vs. Costa Rica, at the Allianz Arena.

While Germany were up 2-1 at half time, the scoreline was doubled on both sides to 4-2 by full time, with Paulo Wanchope scoring both of the Costa Rican goals, and Miroslav Klose scoring goals two and three after Lahm put the Germans 1-0 up, and Thorsten Frings scoring the winning goal with three mnutes on the clock.

A great start, to hopefully what will be a great competition.

Let the debate begin.

Ecuador have just beaten Poland 2-0.........

Incidentally, it's not soccer it's football (only joking.......... :D )

COME ON ENGLAND!!!!

Of course, but football is quite ambiguous, especially around this board.

I didn't actually get to seeing the win in the end, but I'm going to watch it tomorrow on video. Did Poland really perform that badly?

Poland were absolutely dire - in fact the Ecuador goalkeeper didn't have a save to make in the entire match (although Poland did hit the post twice late in the game).

I was very impressed with Ecuador, and I think they can qualify for the next round if they play like this.

Pretty poor, Matt...I thought they were capable of much more...

They looked pretty jaded especially in that 2nd half...

Mind you, I still think Ecudaor's 2nd was a tad offside...

Hoping no upsets occur in a certain Group B game tomorrow!

If Paraguay play like Ecuador did in the first half then I might be worried - England rarely win the first game so I hope tomorrow will be different.  Will be in the pub at noon to get a good seat though................ :P

I'm pretty confident that England have got what it takes...(how that sentence could come back to haunt me!) We'll have been watching their style of play very closely...

Judging by the interest this first game is stirring up, you may want to get in there as soon as it opens!

I've recorded the whole thing while still being knowledgeable of the result, I was busy with other things at the time, but it was still on in the background. Thanks Paul.

Poland were one of my major teams to either go out in the first round, or finish a very shaky second place behind the big guns of Germany. This despite having players like Rzaza amongst their ranks, one of my favourite players in the employ of ADO Den Haag back in the Netherlands, two of the 'keepers being present in England, and a couple of players from my favourite Polish side, Legia Warszawa.

Time to look back and wonder what could have been.

Pretty poor, Matt...I thought they were capable of much more...

If we hadn't drawn such a tough first round, I'm telling you, there'd be a damn good chance the U.S. would be winning the World Cup this time.  We're ranked number 5 in the world.  We made it to the quarter finals in '02 and our team now is alot better than then IMO.

We still have a shot.. just a very slim one.

Subject: Re: Soccer World Cup 2006

The problem with the Red, White and Blue is the group they've drawn.

The Italians and the Czechs play them in the group stage, and even when they're done with that, if they were to finish second in the group, they would most likely see themselves facing Brazil (who, let's face it, will finish top of their group.)

I could easily a lot apply my comments on Poland (above) to England's performance...

And Eriksson's substitution decisions still continue to leave me baffled...

That said, a win's a win...but not a fantastically convincing performance...

With this win, and with T+T vs. Sweden underway at Westfalen, we're thanking Gamarra more and more the longer this stays 1-0 (though with only eight minutes gone, that surely looks like changing.

You guys better watch out, the U.S. just might make it.  We're ranked fifth in the world, playing the best futbol right now we've ever played.  8)

We've got some tough competition to face though, thats what lessons the chances considerably.  But its not like it can't be done.  Anyone remember the "Miracle on ice"? ;)

I just loved to watch the smug faces of the Japanese players turn to horror when Cahill kicked that stunner at the 84th minute - everyone was writing us off, but I knew we could do it - just brilliant!!!  :) And then the two others with an eight minute period - fantastic. By then the blatantly wrong earlier decision was easily forgotten. I think if we play like this we have every chance of beating Brazil.

The Japanese worked hard and played a good game of football, actually

And Cackhill is one of the most over-rated players of the competition - he's up there with Christiano Ronaldo

Yes, I'm watching! Thanks Paul. :) We probably don't have the best team in the world, and perhaps it's not even the best Dutch team ever (can anyone name more than five players ..?), but at least it's a team. ;)

Subject: Re: Soccer World Cup 2006

Yes, the French really underperformed there...

Spain look pretty tasty on that evidence...the last quarter of the Tunisia/Saudi match was a corker...

...and still no deadlock broken with Germany/Poland, despite Poland down to 10 men...

Germany snatch the game literally at the death with a goal by Neuville...

(Why am I tempted to say 'typical German luck'?!!)

With one game to play, it's not looking good for the Poles...

No sorry, that won't suffice. Ecuador already has three points, remember? So with a draw they would get a fourth point, and with Poland still at nil (and only one game left for Poland) it's bye-bye... ::)
Costa Rica has to beat Ecuador, and then in the final matches Germany has to beat Ecuador, and Poland has to beat Costa Rica (preferrably with a great goal difference). Then, and only then, Poland has a chance of progressing to the next stage. But it's a very, very slim chance of that happening...

Not necessarily...

'Predictable' we may be, but there are times when we can raise our game against the 'big boys'...

It's not quite there for us yet (we're still capable of much better), but it's qualification to phase two...

We certainly can raise our game against the 'big boys' but if we played like we did today against Trinidad, we would be the ones needing to be scraped off the pitch.

They certainly did - 88 minutes. Lundberg's goal was pretty good.

This means we have to beat Sweden to keep the top place. If the Trinidad game was anything to go by, I reckon we'll find it tough with these guys (they'll prove me wrong now and thump 15 goals in the back of their net).

If we win the group, I think we'll most likely go on to play Ecuador (who look like finishing Second in Group A), if we finish second, there's a high possibility of playing Germany. Now THAT would be a difficult game!

If we win the group, I think we'll most likely go on to play Ecuador (who look like finishing Second in Group A), if we finish second, there's a high possibility of playing Germany. Now THAT would be a difficult game!

Germany, to my mind at any rate, certainly haven't impressed...

(See? It's not just us!)

Whoever it is, I'll bet deep down they won't be relishing us as opponents...'specially if we do manage to crank things up...we shall, of course, see...

By my reckoning, Mr Philip, if both of us progressed nicely, we would meet in one of the semi-final games...

If we beat Italy then we will end up meeting the winner of Switzerland V Ukraine.

England will meet portugal or Netherlands in the QF.

There is a chance that Australia could meet england in the semis if they progress that far.

Apparently so. Still, it wasn't an unfair game. The only player to leave the field because of an injury sustained by a foul was Christiano Ronaldo (and he left the field only twenty minutes after the foul was committed).

And it's a shame to see Holland go out especially after such a brave fight  :(

They're like most teams in the competition - trying to sneak a couple of dirty tackles and fool the ref. Portugal are actually better known for their diving (Christiano Ronaldo especially)

I'm certain that 'Greavsie' got injured in the group games in that tournament...

Mind you, that was a wonderful semi-final football-wise...it'll be pushing it saying you'll see that sort of quality this Saturday, but I do hope so!

Before that semi, Portugal were rattled when North Korea thumped three past them in the opening 20 minutes, only for Eusebio to spare Portugal's blushes in their 5-3 comeback!

And, speaking of North Korea, they ceremoniously 'dumped' Italy out of the tournament that year...

...so, take some 'inspiration', Australia!

And a very dubious penalty, to boot!

Some good football on display, but a real shame that you couldn't make the breakthrough with the extra man (Kewell was missed terribly!), but it's really not for me to say as that's exactly what we failed to do against Brazil four years ago... :-\\

Extremely dubious, though I have promised myself not to harp on that... ;D  Suffice to say, don't let an Italian dribble into the area with ten secs to go when it's 0-0, and then then don't slide.  It's asking for trouble isn't it now ?  ;D

Yep, it was great, as I said in the other thread, it has done the game an incredible power of good over here.  Although everyone is disappointed at the result (maybe more the nature of it ?) we are all very proud of the Australian team for achieving something we KNEW they were capable of.  There are a lot of naysayers out there who would be silently choking on their words about now  :P

Portugal had the better of the play (without creating any real chances though). Germany on the other hand had Bastian Schweinsteiger.
...with the help of an own goal.

Well, it's all over so we can all go to bed.

Italy wins after penalty kicks.

Ahh, I'm a little disappointed. The game was very good between Italy and France, but Zidane got sent off after stupidly headbutting an Italian player... Henry had been exchanged earlier for some kind of injury or tiredness. So France ended up losing in the penalties, with two of their best scorers missing, even though they played the game better throughout. I'll admit, I'm royally pissed off at Zidane - he is one of the greatest soccer players ever, but that was a truly ignominious way to end his career. When so many people are counting on you, to let them down like that because you can't control your temper...

Anyway, at least France made it to the final - something they were not expected by anyone to do. :)

it's funny, right when it was happening i was talking about rooney's red card against portugal (it was against portugal, right?) and saying, see, that's why these younger players can be a liability cuz they're kinda hot-headed whereas an older wiser player like zidane would never do something stupid like... and right then, pretty much, he makes a liar outta me...  :-[

I want to know this so badly now.

I've sat and said to anybody that will listen that Zizzou is by far the best player of this generation.
Time and time again he's enthralled and amazed me, and for him to end things in such a fashion is a great disapointment to me.

I can't begin to imagine what would have to have been said for him to react in such a way, but I guarentee, if it was enough for Zidane to react like that.. I'd have killed Materazzi.

I think Zidane was born in Algeria but has French citizenship.  He shouldn't have shaved his head, the magic bald spot would have won France the Cup :D

Yeah, as Rice just said, Zizzou is Algerian.. and I'm gonna assume what Materazzi said could well have had something to do with that.

come to think of it, my folks were talking about how anti-algerian racism is a big problem in france. it's camus all over again! hmm, the plot thickens...

man, i wish they'd had one of those boom mics over there when it happened. i bet zidane will never say what it was, it'll look like sour grapes if he does.

Headbutting is illegal in hockey.  I believe it carries either a match penalty or a 10-minute misconduct.

I wish that he hadn't done that because I wanted France to win.... but still, I have to give the headbutt itself some credit. :P It sent the Italian guy down on his ass.
