I hope new Hampshire wins it finally. They were so close the last two Finals, but it'll take anyone but Minnesota, Michigan, BC, BU, Maine or Wisconsin. They win about all of them.

Colorado College Is No. 1 In The Nation!!

After Colorado College's overtime win over then-No. 1 Minnesota on Saturday, coach Scott Owens was thrilled. After defeating the Gophers again Sunday, he was content but concerned for the health of his players.

After realizing his team would probably be named No. 1 in national polls on Monday, Owens got sassy.

"Isn't that wonderful?" he asked cynically.

CC claimed all 34 first-place votes along with the top spot in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine men's college hockey poll.

The last time Colorado College (18-3-1) was ranked No. 1 was during the 2002-2003 season when the Tigers went on to become regular-season champions in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Before that, CC hadn't been ranked No. 1 since March 1996.

CC players and coaches say they don't regularly monitor the polls - rankings don't count in NCAA Tournament selection. They do, however, realize it's nice to be recognized for their hard work.

"We've earned it up to this point," Owens said.

Minnesota fell to No. 4 in the poll after five consecutive weeks at No. 1. The Gophers have lost their past three games - their longest losing streak this season.

Boston College and Michigan both moved up a spot to No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

Wisconsin rounds out the top five in the poll.

The Badgers moved up from No. 7 after a sweep of St. Cloud State.

The Tigers' two weekend wins also helped move them to No. 2 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. CC is within two points of conference leader Wisconsin.

North Dakota is third in the WCHA, one point behind Colorado College.

The Fighting Sioux play CC at Colorado Springs World Arena on Friday and Saturday.

In addition to the No. 1 ranking, CC also took over the top spot from Minnesota in U.S. College Hockey Online's PairWise rankings.

The PairWise mimics the NCAA selection committee's method of selecting participants for the NCAA Tournament.

"More than anything (the weekend wins) help us in the PairWise, it continues to give us cushion, and we're going to need it," Owens said, noting CC probably has the second-toughest schedule after Wisconsin among the top five teams.

"(The PairWise) ends up counting a little more (than the ranking)," he said

One day after a record comeback put Colorado College in the NCAA Frozen Four for the first time in eight years, players found they will be part of a different kind of history next week when they travel to Columbus, Ohio, to play for the national championship.

For the first time in the 58-year history of the NCAA Tournament, the final four teams are members of one conference. CC joins Western Collegiate Hockey Association rivals Denver, North Dakota and Minnesota in the Frozen Four on April 7 and 9.

CC (31-8-3) faces defending national champion Denver (30-9-2), which defeated New Hampshire on Sunday, in one semifinal. Minnesota (28-14-1) plays North Dakota (24-14-5) in the other. The winners play April 9 for the national title at Value City Arena.

“Remarkable,” said CC coach Scott Owens, who returned Sunday from Grand Rapids, Mich., to savor both Easter dinner and his team’s triumph in the NCAA Midwest Regional, where it rallied from three goals down to beat nemesis Michigan. “We’ve long said the league is strong. It’s unique. It’s a great source of pride for our league.”

CC will play Denver for the sixth time this year. Owens made it home in time to watch the Pioneers’ game.

“At first I was hoping New Hampshire would win just for a different opponent for some freshness,” he said. “But after it looked like it was going to be all WCHA teams, I got excited about that.”

Playing Denver again was almost fated.

“Playing in such big games, I guess it’s kind of fitting this year we’re playing them again,” said Owens, making his first career trip to the Frozen Four in six years as CC coach. “Who do you want to play? North Dakota is really hot right now, Denver’s playing well, we’re playing well, Minnesota is. It really doesn’t matter.”

Owens was so focused on getting to the Frozen Four he wasn’t sure what to do once he did. After CC’s dramatic win over Michigan, he had to ask someone for tournament dates. A day later, Owens was up to speed.

“It’s sinking in a little bit,” Owens said Sunday evening. “It’s nice. It’s a nice position to be in.”

CC has more than a week to get ready for Denver. But this will be a refresher course rather than a cram session. The teams split the season series and shared the regular-season conference title, but Denver edged CC 1-0 in the WCHA Final Five championship game in St. Paul, Minn., after which the teams shared an awkward flight home.

That won’t happen this time. Owens is considering a charter to Columbus.

“I don’t want to go through that again,” Owens said. “The NCAA Frozen Four shouldn’t be like that. That was fine for a weekend, but not for this.”

Tickets for Frozen Four

Tickets for the Frozen Four have been sold out since last summer, but CC is expected to get an allotment of about 600 tickets. For information, call CC at 719-389-6100.
