Subject: NBA Playoffs~2004

Written By: RockandRollFan on 04/21/04 at 9:26 am

First off...LeBron James won the Rookie Of The Year Award but right away he talked about his best friend...Denvers Carmello Anthony and how he wished they could've won "CO-Rookie Of The Year"...he then went on to say he'd rather be in the playoffs and then wished Carmello good luck.  It's very nice to see that in a league full af Lakers...I mean EGO's, there is also kindness ;)

Unfortunately I don't know anything about NHL and NBA. Apart from the fact that NHL is hockey and NBA is basketball. I watched some basketball on Channel 4 and . . . it was alright. I like the bit in hockey when the players charge into each other and go through the glass barriers - pretty spectacular.

Apart from that. I know very little about it.  :-\

I think if the Lakers don't win the Championship then it will mean the end of their run.  Because like some of the sports analyst have said if they don't win it all then Phil Jackson will be gone.  I also think that Kobe will leave and I wouldnt be surprised if Malone retires (though he might come back if they don't win) and some of the other players whose contracts are up will also leave.  So basically you will be left with Shaq and thats about it.

As for this years Playoffs I am rooting for Minnesota and New Orleans but it doesn't look like New Orleans is going to make it out of the first round unforunitly to many players injured or playing hurt.

The Pacers play tonight up 2-0 on the dreadful Celtics, and Milwaukee and Detroit are tied at one apiece. The "experts" are saying the Pistons are better than the Pacers with Rasheed Wallace, but we Pacer fans know better, since we've beaten them 3 out of four times in the regular season. (And we can forgive the last defeat in Detroit, just to give Piston fans a false sense of superiority.) On the other hand, the Bucks won 3 of 4 from Indiana but lost the last game. So there really isn't a reason that the Pacers can't win it all this year, even with the latecoming Lakers (Team Tragedy) allegedly being favorites again.

I have always been a Laker hater, and I was very happy to seem them get pounded by the Houston Rockets on Friday night.  The Lakers are a very overrated team, they just barely won Game 1 by one point because of that lucky Hail Mary air ball-dunk by Kobe and Shaq.  They still lead their series 2-1, though it is more out of luck.  They are a bunch of whiny soap opera stars.

Looks like the Pacers are on the right track to possibly becoming the 3rd of the 4 original ABA teams to get into the finals (Spursa have won twice & the Nets lost twice)....now if my Nuggets could dig out of the hole thier in, tonight could be a step in that direction as well.....

If they go down, ill root for the lakers, because Kobe can be the best player in the league when he wants to be. After that, i just dont want the Spurs or Detroit to win the Championship; neither of those teams are good for the NBA's ratings anyways.

Yeah, wouldn't be something if the T-Wolves blow another first round game. Maybe another quick exit for KG, Flip Saunders and company. I'm sure Laker fans would like it. But I'm not a Laker fan, so I actually hope Minnesota pulls this one out, and the Nuggets can regroup for another playoff sereis in 2005.

The following is an article from my local paper....I like the positive sound of it....I hope it rings true :)

Optimism is running rampant with the Denver Nuggets.

They jumped from 17 victories and residence in the NBA’s basement to 43 wins and a berth in the NBA playoffs.

They boast a youthful core of talent that includes Carmelo Anthony, runner-up for NBA rookie of the year.

Anthony, who expects a bright future, believes Denver is destined to become a force in the NBA.

Soon. Next year, he said, the Nuggets could win the new Northwest Division, which includes Minnesota. Wait. There’s more. “And after that, it’s time to go for the ring,’’ Anthony said. In other words, Anthony believes that the Nuggets could rule the NBA by 2005-2006.

Bear with him. He’s 19 and has already won an NCAA title and transformed an NBA franchise.

Still, reality has this habit of obliterating optimism.

Reality: Denver lost four of five games to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference quarterfinals.

Reality: Denver lost its three games in Minnesota by a total of 39 points and never seriously threatened in the fourth quarter.

Reality: The Nuggets face more construction if they want to close the gap between No. 8, their seed in this season’s playoffs, and No. 1.

Anthony envisions rings in the future, but Denver has never played in the NBA Finals. The Nuggets have not been in the Western Conference finals in 20 years.

General manager Kiki Vandeweghe knows Nuggets history. He knows the team lost more than 50 games six times from 1991 to 2003.

He knows enough to be thrilled by his team’s transformation.

Yet he wants more.

“We’re a work in progress,’’ he said. “I would never be satisfied with just making the playoffs.’’

The playoff series with Minnesota offered Denver a glimpse at what it needs to climb to the top of the West.

Vandeweghe and coach Jeff Bzdelik left the series coveting two crucial pieces the Nuggets need to compete for a title.

First, Denver needs a big man — a Kevin Garnett-type — who can score, rebound and defend.

Nuggets power forward Nenê might fit this role someday, but Friday he had the alarming line of four fouls, two rebounds and two points.

“Elite’’ teams, Bzdelik said, can look to a big man in the middle to score in the game’s final minutes. The Lakers boast Shaquille O’Neal, the Spurs Tim Duncan and the Kings Chris Webber.

Rasheed Wallace, who played at Portland, Atlanta and finally Detroit this season, will be available as a free agent. He’s versatile and 6-foot-11. He will be popular and expensive.

The Nuggets, Vandeweghe reports with a smile, have money to spend.

“We’ve got a lot more money,’’ Vandeweghe said. He has approximately $20 million to spend on free agents.

The second need, Vandeweghe and Bzdelik agree, requires a less glamorous, less expensive player. The Nuggets need a defender similar to Trenton Hassell, who locked down Anthony during the series.

“We could use one key, marquee defensive guy,’’ Bzdelik said.

Vandeweghe said he will seek a player similar to T.R. Dunn, now a Nuggets assistant coach, who served as Denver’s defensive stopper from 1980-91.

Many questions about the Nuggets’ future remain hazy. Vandeweghe again declined to say if he plans to offer Bzdelik an extension on his contract that runs through 2004-05. He also has refused to clearly state Bzdelik will return as coach.

“That’s not the big question right now,’’ Vandeweghe said.

Vandeweghe said he’s busy considering which Nuggets will return and which free agents he will pursue.

Denver has six free agents: Jon Barry, Rodney White, Chris Andersen, Michael Doleac, Mark Pope and Jeff Trepagnier.

Center Marcus Camby can opt out of his contract during the offseason. He said Friday that the Nuggets are his “first, second and third choice’’ for next season.

I used to like the Lakers...from Jerry West, Gail Goodrich and Wilt...up through "Showtime"....BUT The problem that I have with these Lakers are 1. Kobe and the teams genral smugness, and O'Neal. Way back in 1970 a guy named Spencer Haywood was trying to get into the Pros....he took the NBA to court and won a landmark case allowing kids to get into the league by way of a "Hradship".  So anyway, a couple years ago I hear that he went up to shaq and introduced himself, telling shaq what he had done. shaq basically said "I don't care who you are or what you did, get outta here"  >:( If it weren't for Heywood maybe shaq would've had to finish college before he could make his millions....he is a jerk, IMO :P

Well, considering that the Pacers went scoreless for nearly 4 minutes in the 3rd (Which you can attribute to the Piston "D")...Indiana may have locked this up earlier. I would like to comment on the Detroit D and 'Never say die' attitude of you Piston fans, but the Pacers will prove to be the better team-win or lose.  ;D

Don't worry about domination, Rock, because it won't happen in this series. The real domination will come in the finals, where the Lakers will finally show their true colors and get whipped by the Eastern cConference Champs. Sorry, Wolveroses, the Western Conference, by all means, had been sealed long before the San Antonio series. There really isn't a way that the T-Wolves match with the four All Stars other than KG, and Derek Fisher has done a fair job in stopping him, too. But may the best team in the East pound those has-beens in L.A. ;D

Great points made, Wolveroses....make take is to just add:
Shaq can only dunk....AND he was totally disrespectful to Spencer Haywood when Haywood introduced himself a few years back.  It was Haywood who made it possible for under-grads to get into the pro's.
Kobe is a self-centered jerk with talent, who may or may not have raped someone....I say maybe he did because during the police interrogation he was asked if the sex was cosentual...he took THIRTY seconds to reply....saying that is was ???
The Jerry West/Gail Goodrich/Happy Hairston/Pat Riley/Wilt era that won 33 straight games at one point...AND "Showtime" will never be topped by this unit of thugs as far as I'm concerned. They are nothing more than the Yankees of basketball...trying to get marquee players and thus "Buying" a title...and we ALL no what happened to them....they were fried by the fish :)

Of course these are probably some of the same people who take there kid to a rock concert and protest because there was dirty language....if you don't want your kids to hear it then don't take them ::)

Well, that's it for me. Congratulations on the Detroit Pistons on winning the Eastern Conference, and also the Pacers for getting to the game. I believe thay they never did play up to the level they were capable of since the Miami series, but I don't believe it was due to the long wait between Boston and the Heat. The Pistons were the best team in the second part of the regular season and deserve to be in the championship. However, I also want to believe the Pacers will win it all with or without Reggie Miller, who proved he was no Gary Payton (anymore). And now I pray that Detiot will finally win a title for Larry Brown. He is the one that deserves to go out in style, not Payton or Karl Malone. Go Pistons! ;) (Reluctantly :()

I think one of the things that Detroit has going for them is they are just younger and alot more athletic than the Lakers are. I think if any team can come back from 3 game to 1 down its the Lakers because they have Kobe and Shaq. Even if the Laker do come back and win this series I think Gary Payton will be heading off to another team. One thing I don't understand is the Lakers are not playing any defense(Phil Jackson coached teams pride themselves on their defense.) Another thing Phil Jackson is getting outcoached almost never happens. The Lakers shouldn't have even shown up on the floor in Game 3. Not to show up for an NBA Finals game is unexplainable. They should have just stayed home. At least last nights game was closer.

Subject: Re: NBA Playoffs

If that was the case, the Pacers should have won because they were younger than the Pistons on average age. Then again, they weren't that athletic. at least in the playoffs.
