Cats have their charms - But there's just something about coming home to a dog that's always happy to see you, misses you when you're not there, follows you around, and will protect you from the boogeyman and axe murderers! :)

I may be whistledog, but I prefer Cats.  Cats don't make much noise, whereas a Dog can bark all night

I prefer dogs;  properly trained, they won't bark at night unless there is someone DEFINITELY intruding onto their/your territory.  We have 2 dogs, a small one that sees himself as my wife's lapdog (he's only 20 lbs or so, so that's OK) and one who worships the ground a walk upon (someone must have been thinking of this one when he made the bumper sticker saying, "Lord, please make me the kind of person my dog thinks I am!"

It's pretty common in my area for people to have more than one dog, often a small dog/large dog combination (such as we have).  I think of such a combination as being, "The little one is the alarm, and the big one is the enforcer."  Both will bark at the approach of strangers, but the little one will bark several barks in rapid succession, enough to wake us up.  The big one will bark 2 or 3 times, and her bark is deeper, and it lets the potential intruder know that a large dog is there, and they trespass at their own peril.

Of course, if the intruders are idiots or psychopaths, we do have handguns and shotguns...

I don't mind small dogs, (you know, the REALLY small dogs) but not too keen on big dogs. Anything bigger than a standard sized Golden Retriever scares me.  :o :-[
