But see, I did this alphabetically and mostly from memory ;)
Listing them in the order they were admitted to the Union is a tad harder :P

California Northern...4
Southern...3
Florida Northern...3.5
Southern...2.5
Hawaii 4
Idaho 4.5
Nevada Northern...3.5
New York 3.5
Oregon 4.5
Subject: Re: Rate the states
The ones I've been in:
Arizona: 5. From what I saw, I would love it.
California: 4. It's a nice state, but I wouldn't be opposed to moving.
Nevada: 3. Didn't really appeal to me.
North Carolina: 5. I ADORED North Carolina. I would so love to live there.
Virginia: 5. So green and pretty. Loved it.
Subject: Re: Rate the states
Forgot about DC...you can include it in Maryland since Maryland donated the bulk of the land that the capital is now in :)

DC: 4.5. Minus .5 because of the massive traffic congestion. ;D
There. I finally answered it, Rice. :D
Subject: Re: Rate the states
California 4.5
Florida 4.5
Hawaii 5
Maryland (and Washington DC) 4.5
Oregon 5, cooler than Washington
Virginia 5
Washington 4, it's boring here, and when you go other places and say you're from washington, people think you're talking about washington DC, i'm surprised it doesn't say "washington state" on here just so nobody gets confused.

Florida East Coast...3.5, West Coast...4.5
North Carolina 4 - It all depends on where in the state. Chapel Hill and the surrounding area is nice (which is why I plan on attending UNC-Chapel Hill :)). Charlotte is crowded and polluted, but the surrounding areas have plenty to offer for entertainment (Concord Mills, Carowind's).
South Carolina 4 - Carowind's! Myrtle Beach is nice but crowded. Surfside, Garden City, and surrounding areas are good though.
Tennessee 4 - Nice and green and stuff. Not all redneck and country like percieved. Seems like it would be a nice place to live (although I prefer the ocean).

UNC-CH is a heck of a lot cheaper than Duke for sure ;D (I was a Dukie) I love NC :)

I thought Carowinds was in Charlotte...or is it on the border?

Tennessee is probably the prettiest part of I-40 in the country...which doesn't say much ;D
Subject: Re: Rate the states
Alabama 3...I was there for a brief period in the late 80s, it wasn't spectacular but it wasn't horrible either...I wouldn't mind seeing it again :)
Alaska I just kinda flew over it and it looked pretty...4
Arizona 5...Grand Canyon baby :)
Arkansas 4...I drove through it a few times, people are friendly and it's pretty :)
California 4...I live here...taxes are too high and the people are too crazy but otherwise it's nice :)
Colorado 5...snow!
Connecticut 3...it just doesn't capture me the same way as the other New England States
Delaware 2...woohoo, I'm in Delaware...though the beaches are nice :)
Florida 4...too many mosquitos
Georgia 5...what can I say? I like the South...Atlanta and Augusta were really nice :)
Hawaii I was at the airport once, does that count?
Idaho I've only been in the Yellowstone part of Idaho...I give that a 5
Illinois 5...Chicago is awesome ;D
Maryland (and Washington DC) 4...kinda ghetto...it's where some of my friends live and it's kinda urban/rural schizo
Massachusetts 4...the roads! they are wacky!
Missouri 4...too humid
Montana 5...absolutely gorgeous...I need to make my way to Glacier National Park someday
Nevada 3...I just go here to gamble
New Jersey 4...the garden part of this state is actually quite nice, and Atlantic City is a lot of fun
New Mexico 3...too much bland open space
New York 5...all of it is smashed into NYC or Buffalo, but in between it's a very nice landscape
North Carolina 5...I'd like to live here, for sure...low cost of living, friendly folks, TONS to do
North Dakota 1...godforsaken hellhole
Ohio 3...not too bad :)
Oklahoma 2...okay...I'm in Oklahoma
Oregon 4...the only parts I like are Crater Lake and Klamath Falls...the rest of the state kinda irked me for some reason
Pennsylvania 4...I've only been to Philly, really
Rhode Island 4...it's like Mass Jr.
South Carolina 4...it's pleasant, but it's no NC
South Dakota 3...Mount Rushmore is the only redeeming quality...Tom Daschle drags down the state's value
Tennessee 5...I think this would be a nice place to live as long as you stay away from Knoxville (my friend is a Vandy grad)
Texas 4...it's so huge! I guess it really depends where you go...
Utah 4...pretty mountains and the capitol building is nice too...but it is also a lot of open space
Vermont 3...good skiing
Virginia 5...green! :)
Washington 5...very pretty, rains a bit much, but it's right next to Canada
Wisconsin 4...it's like a poor man's version of Illinois, hehehe
Wyoming 5...naturally beautiful, I like it
Subject: Re: Rate the states
I'm Canadian so I haven't visited many states but here's my rating:
Alabama---2 Haven't been there. Seems hill-billy but there are
those plantation homes and part of it border the
Gulf of Mexico
Alaska---2.75 Haven't been there either. Heard everything's
$$$ and tons of mosquitos, but it does border the
Pacific, which I'm more partial to than the Atlantic.
Arizona--2.75 I had grandparents who use to visit there in the
winter so I went there a couple of times as a kid.
A bit too much dessert but beautiful sunsets/rises.
Arkansas---1.25 Sounds like a state of nothing.
California---4.75 Went to LA for two nights when I was 10 to
see DisneyLand & its airport a couple of times.
Didn't care much 'bout it, but liked Palm Desert.
Only drawbacks are quakes and urban sprawl in
some cities.
Colorado---3.5 Flew over it & have been to Denver airport.
Looks like a beautiful state, but heard there's a
drug problem.
Connecticut---3.5 Doesn't sound as nice as the other NE
states. Heard parts of it as bleak & polluted,
and sounds like suburbian NYC.
Delaware---2 Drove through part of it. Didn't see much.
Sounds congested and could be nicknamed South
New Jersey.
Florida---4.25 I love it, and its a nice break from the snow!
Don't really care for Orlando though & those gators.
Seems like theres too many shark attacks also.
Georgia---3.75 Haven't been there, but seems so quaint. Only
drawback I can think of, is that there seems to be
no public coastal beaches except on the islands.
Hawaii---4.5 Looks lush and lovely. Don't know if there's a lot
to do there other than relaxation and surfing.
Idaho---3.5 Looks like a place for outdoor fun.
Illinois---2.25 I've been to Chicago's airport, and I would like
to see more of the city, but other than that, Illinois
doesn't look very interesting.
Indiana---1.5 Sounds like a wasteland.
Iowa---3.25 Looks fresh and green /w friendly people.
Kansas---3.25 Looks nice but probably too many twisters.
Kentucky---2.5 Looks hickish, but sounds like the state for
horse lovers.
Louisiana---3.5 Sounds like a state filled /w vitality & a hint of
French flare.
Maine---4.25 Went there a couple of times. Last time I was
14, and too ignorant to really enjoy the surroundings.
Sounds quiant /w the coast, woods, and lakes.
Maryland (and Washington DC)---3.75. A little too much of an
an urban sprawl for me, but I lived in the DC area for
four yrs so it's almost like my second home.
Massachusetts---4. Would love to visit. Seems quaint and
holds a lot of history not to mention that
coast! But it might be a bit too conservative.
Michigan---1.75 Sounds like a factory state, and I don't care
if I never visit Detroit.
Minnesota---3 Seems like a laid-back cottage state, but at
the same time, a little too swampish for me.
Mississippi---1.75 Seems a bit dismal.
Missouri---3.25 Doesn't seem too bad
Montana---3.25 Seems a bit like Idaho
Nebraska---3 A bit too plain for me
Nevada---2.75 I went to Las Vegas and would like to visit it
again, but definitely not to live there. Nevada
seems too liberal /w drugs, alcohol, & prostitution.
New Hampshire---4. Went there when I was 14 but, again, I
was too ignorant to enjoy my surroundings.
Seems beautiful, but is it joining /w Boston?
New Jersey---1.75 Haven't been there, but sounds like the
Garbage State with the exception of the
southern tip I guess.
New Mexico---2.75 Seems to have too much dessert, but the
architect there looks beautiful.
New York---3.5 I know this is weird, but I haven't been to
NYC, yet I've been to several parts of upper New
York state. Some places are run-down, but other
places are quite charming like Lake Placid. I must
visit NYC before the end of my time since it looks
so exciting, but I don't want to live there.
North Carolina---3.5 Drove through part of it. Saw lots of
part. Looks like a nice state. I'm partial to
the coastal south.
North Dakota---3 Sounds like it has a nice mixture of flat land
and plateau.
Ohio---1.75 Looks like another midwestern wasteland state.
BTW, I don't consider states bordering the Great Lakes
as being in the midwest /w the exception of MN&WI
Oklahoma---2.5 Too close to Texas
Oregon---3.75 Looks lovely /w the gigantic trees, mountains,
and coast.
Subject: Re: Rate the states
I think you could do a "Rate the Provinces" thread, O Canadian One :)
Subject: Re: Rate the states
Pennsylvania---3.5 I've been to several places in the eastern
part of the state. Beautiful landscape /w the
green rolling hills and Poconos (must drive the
95!). Many places I stayed were charming, but
I saw a few dismal mining towns, and I'm sure
it gets worse the further out west. Pittsburgh
also looks like the pits. And as for Filthy-
Delphia (that's how I seriously pronounced it
when I was little), I drove through it and it
looked ok, but I have heard that it really
should be called that!
Rhode Island---3.75 Looks cute, but I bet it's overcrowded
South Carolina---4.25 I would like to go back. I really loved
Myrtle Beach, but I would also like to see
Charleston again.
South Dakota---3 Would like to see Mount Rushmore
Tennessee----1.25 All those floods and everything. No
thanks.
Texas---2.25 There seem to be a few nice cities like San
Antonio, but being very pro-gun, infested /w
snakes, having too many stupid laws, Texas does
sound a little too "waco" for me even though I've
never been there.
Utah---1 Sounds like there's nothing to do there.
Vermont---4 I've got to visit this state. I love to down-hill
ski so I bet it's a haven for me.
Virginia---3.75 I lived in the DC area (on the Virginia side) for
four years so Virginia is like my second home. I not
only like the DC area, but there's also Williamsburg
(a bit of history), the coastal area (need to visit
it), and the beautiful Shenandoah. So much
diversity, it's beautiful! The only place I didn't care
for was Richmond, which was a bit run-down. I also
wouldn't want to see the south-western tip of the
state because that's getting a bit too blue-grass
for me.
Washington---3.5 Haven't been there. Looks nice, but a bit
too rainy for me.
West Virginia---1.75 Drove through part of it. Wasn't
impressed. Seems too hill-billy. (hearing banjo
music just thinking about it)
Wisconsin---3.25 Never seen it, but looks like a decent slow-
paced state /w beautiful scenery.
Wyoming---3 Looks like a beauiful state, but a bit too lonely.

Charleston is much better in my opinion :)

That's an idea, but not many of you southern neighbors like to travel north (lol) so I probably won't get too many responses!

Speaking as a lifelong resident of Southwest Va., just keep on thinking that way. More clean air and southern hospitality for me to soak up!
Subject: Re: Rate the states
I'll rate the places I've been:
California......3.5 water is too cold and looks dirty
Florida 5.0...waters clear, white sands, the keys are the best
Tennesee....3.0 I didn't like the mountain lions near the river
Texas......5.0 My home state!
Mississipi....2.0 slept through the whole state (twice)
Louisianna...4.5 Love Mardi Gras, hate the dirty streets
Alabama......3.0 went for a wedding didn't see much
Washington...1.0 rains too much...to depressing weather
Subject: Re: Rate the states
It's hard to give states numerical ratings, so I'll just comment on the states I've visited.
Arkansas It was nighttime, I was on a bus, so I don't know much about Arkansas.
Colorado I loooved CO when I was there in the summer time; great temperatures, great scenery. However, I hate snow, so I don't know how I'd handle CO in the winter.
Georgia I spent five days in downtown Atlanta and that was pretty cool. They have pretty good public transportation there.
Illinois Pretty much like Iowa, I guess. I've been to Illinois a lot, but mainly to go to the other two Quad Cities.
Iowa I was born and raised in Iowa, and have no intentions of leaving! I love it here.
Kentucky I spent hardly any time in Kentucky, but I do remember seeing tobacco fields, which was cool.
Louisiana New Orleans is a great city. I got my picture taken by a Bourbon St. street sign while I was there so that was cool. :)
Minnesota I think if I couldn't live in Iowa anymore, I would live in Minnesota. I've been on vacation there four times, and have had great experiences every time I've visited.
Mississippi I don't remember much of MS, but what I saw of it was pretty!
Missouri Conan O'Brien called Missouri "Arkansas' dunce cap," but I would have to disagree. I enjoyed visiting St. Louis and would love to go back someday.
Nebraska And people think Iowa is boring...
Tennessee I was in TN the first time I saw mountains, so I'll always remember that. The people there were friendly, as far as I can remember.
Wisconsin WI has good scenery, and it's the home of the Packers! If you every visit Wisconsin, you have to go to the Grotto in Dickeyville. It's certainly a site to see!
Wyoming I felt like I was in a western movie when I was in WY. I even saw tumbleweed! :)
