Au Contraire Billy ! ;D
I quote :
http://www.oralcancerfoundation.org/people/arts_entertainment3.htm
"Very early, Stewart realized that soccer was a chance for him to earn a good living. He practiced hard everyday, and in his late teens he signed an apprentice contract to play with the Brenton FC Football Club. But his soccer career was not what he expected. Too much of the time he was taking care of equipment for players on the first team, and his actual time on the field was short. After only a few short weeks, Stewart hung up his cleats, and decided to pursue another profession. The other major influence in his life, music, soon came calling."
A highly unauthoritative article, as the club referred to is Brentford, not Brenton. ::)
And CLEATS ? :D Puh-lease ! They are called "Studs" if we are referring to Soccer Boots ! :D
Nonetheless, he never went anywhere near playing Soccer for Scotland, and that is a fact! He certainly is one of the proudest members of the "Tartan Army" though. ;)

Meanwhile, north of the border...
Ultravox - Scottish by default! Midge being the only true Scot of the group...groundbreaking use of synth-pop with video...a completely 80's phenomenon, still well-remembered today...
Gerry Rafferty - fine singer/songwriter...hard to beat his early flush of success...lives in the home counties, but rarely seen these days...
Al Stewart - another fine singer/songwriter...apart from the obvious, has made some criminally-ignored material...
Nazareth - superb hard-rockers from Dunfermline, who paid their dues the hard way...'Broken-Down Angel' being my favourite...
M (Robin Scott) - 'Scott' by name? My references say he comes from Croydon, just outside of London! Permanently known for 'Pop Musik' (a fun song)...
Annie Lennox - extremely successful with Eurythmics and solo, but her voice is an acquired taste...
Bay City Rollers - legendary 'pin-ups' from days gone by...although they did write some of their late stuff, it's their early efforts written outside of the group which is best-known...and, I have no shame in admitting, some of it was quite good...!
Average White Band - 'Pieces' was a fine instrumental, but also worthy of a mention is 'Cut The Cake', 'Queen Of My Soul' and the old soul-boy favourite 'Let's Go Round Again'...
Rod calls himself a 'honorary Scot' (he supports the Scottish Inernational football team...well, someone has to...!) - he was, indeed, born in London...
Subject: Re: RT: Scottish Artists
Ultravox ... 4 ... love "Vienna"
Gerry Rafferty ... 4.5
Al Stewart ... 4.5
Nazareth ... 3.5
M (Robin Scott) ... 3.5 (I assume he sung "Pop Musik" ?)
Annie Lennox ... 2 nuh
Bay City Rollers ... 2 never a fan
Average White Band ... 4 (like FB I always thought they were Yanks :))
Subject: Re: RT: Scottish Artists
And, lest I forget...a few 'others'...
Lulu - Glaswegian lass who's been around for ages, best known for her blood-curdling 'Weeee..eeee.eeeellll....' at the start of her version of 'Shout'...
The Procliamers (gulp!)
Scottish to a certain degree...(all quite good in their own way)
Simple Minds
Deacon Blue
Big Country
...and not forgetting the daddies of 'em all...
The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards with that stirring version of 'Amazing Grace' (bagpipes throughout!) - about as appealling as fingernails going down a blackboard...!
Subject: Re: RT: Scottish Artists

Ultravox
Great 80s band. Loved 'Vienna','Hymn' and 'Love's great adventure'. Midge Ure had a so-so solo career and will be forever remembered for writing, with Bob Geldof 'Do they know it's Christmas?' for Band Aid - 4
Gerry Rafferty
Only know 'Baker Street'. Good song - 3
Al Stewart
Only know 'Year of the cat', Again a good song - 3
M (Robin Scott)
Only know 'Pop Music' - 'Talk about . . .' 3
Annie Lennox
Loved 'Walking on broken glass'. Preferred her in Eurythmics though - 3
Bay City Rollers
My mother's favourite band. I did like 'Shang-a-lang','Give a little love' and 'Keep on dancing' though. Is it true that the band blindly stuck a pin in a map of America to come up with their group name? - 4
Average White Band
'Let's go round again' was alright. 'Pick up the pieces' was average . . . I'll give it a 2

I liked 'Letter from America','500 miles' and 'I'm on my way' but to call them singers would be being too generous with compliments.
Quoting:Simple Minds
Deacon Blue
Big Country
End Quote
'Simple Minds' were great (especially 'All the things she said','Don't you forget about me' and 'Belfast child'.
I didn't care for Deacon Blue's 'Wages day' but I did like the cover of 'Never fall in love again' and 'Twist and Shout'.
Only liked the rousing 'One great thing' from Big Country.
Quoting:...and not forgetting the daddies of 'em all...

Lol. Have you heard 'Scotch on the rocks' by Band of the black watch, Paul? I actually liked this song (despite it being bagpipe music).

Band Of The Black Watch...Good Lord, Bobby...what graveyeard did you dig that one up from...?!!
Remember it well...more pipes, but infinitely more bearable than 'Amazing Grace' at a pinch...
Lord Rockingham's XI (despite the song's name) were not Scottish (as such), but rather have me rattle on about 'em, try here for a lowdown...http://www.45-rpm.org.uk/dirl/lordr.htm

The graveyard was my grandad's record collection. He would play it to me (for his own pleasure mainly). It became a bit of a sentimental piece for me to remember my grandad by.

Thanks for the site, Paul. I didn't realise that there were so many musicians in the band.

My choice use of 'graveyard' there, Bobby, was not intended as any kind of slur against your Grandad whatsoever...
...my sincerest apologies for that...I'll choose my words a tad more carefully in future...(removes clodhopping foot from mouth...)

Ho ho! I was not offended. I tend to answer questions by repeating part of a question - Probably habit (and a lot of A' level English lessons).
Thank you for your concern though. It is much appreciated.
