Subject: Re: Rate The Beach Boys Songs
Just presume they're all fives, okay?! >grin<
1. Shut Down
A great song, written by Brian and King of the Rods, ex DJ Roger Christian. Great verse forms, and a great mid-hook. Great guitar solo, too, from Carl.
2. 409
With car sounds excerpted from the car that Beach Boys collaborator Gary Usher (personal enemy of Wilson father Murry) owned at the time, (incidentally a 348), this dabbled at 76 in the US charts 131 days after its release. Note the middle harmony voice doesn't know whether it's hitting a minor or major chord during the "Four-O" on the fadeout.
3. Sloop John B
Nearly not appearing on Pet Sounds at Brian's (well-founded) insistence, it is always believed to be the weakest track (Brian felt he was sliding all over the place on the vocal). I am probably inclined to agree, though on any other album it would have been fantastic.
4. I Get Around
Wow. Wow. Wow. As many I know have said, along with Don't Worry Baby, this may be one of the greatest singles OF ALL TIME. An incredible car song.
5. Rock and Roll Music
To misquote PaulUK (sorry, mate), it doesn't only take the Beatles' version apart, but rips it limb from limb. Charted inside the top five, and not without good reason.
6. Surfer Girl
The first song that Brian Wilson ever wrote, and influenced by Walt Disney's "When You Wish Upon A Star", this was the A-side of another incredible single including... (scans for Little Deuce Coupe on list..) it's not there... Little Deuce Coupe. Another fantastic single.
7. Kokomo
Apparently co-written by Scott McKenzie, "Be sure to wear some flowers..." and John Phillips of Mama's and Papa's fame. The single version of this song was really strange, because, though it was an A-side, if I remember correctly, the B-side was Little Richard's Tutti Frutti.
8. Wipe Out
Made number two over here. A great revival track, again taking the Surfaris track and making it their own. Apparently charted outside the top ten in America.
9. Help Me Rhonda
Okay, which version? The LP version, the Alternate version, the Live version or the illegal mix? >grin< I shall presume I know which one you mean. One of the classic songs for which Brian was sued for not including Mike's name on the writing credits. Personally I can tell when Mike writes and when Brian writes, and this is definitely a Mike lyric. (Note rhyming "eye" and "why" and other such ideas).
10. Don't Worry Baby
The flipside to I Get Around. Full of extraneous noises, if you listen to it through headphones, which sometimes can be a bit distracting. But still one of Brian's best ever written pieces. I have a feeling Roger Christian was a bit against having to collaborate on this for him.
11. Surfin' USA
AKA Sweet Little Sixteen. With help from his then-girlfriend's brother Jimmy Bowles, this, again was a high-charting single. One of the greatest songs they ever released.
12. Surfin' Safari
The first song on the first album. County Fair felt a bit lacking in comparison. In a great quote from Priscilla Cory, "They do the bomps and diddly-ips just like you do", to which the retort was "I don't mind someone taking your bomps now and then, but when they start taking your diddly-ips, that's where I draw the line".
13. Good Vibrations
The... best... song... ever.
Continued.
Subject: Re: Rate The Beach Boys Songs
Probably the most basic rating I'll ever do...(Bobo can do the heavy work on this!)
...simply because, I adore most of 'em...!
I kid ye not! Everything gets 5, bar...
#5. Rock And Roll Music 2 - horrible plodding version...
#7. Kokomo 2 - which I really didn't think was worthy of their talents...
#8. Wipe Out - presumably the version with the Fat Boys? It's the only one I know! See comments for 'Kokomo' 2...
#14. Do You Wanna Dance - 3 obviously Spector production was the idea...doesn't work to its full potential...
#17. Heroes & Villains - 4 same here! But, then again, it was born of frustration...originally a half-hour suite of music, sound effects and comedy skits before the 'Smile' project was kiboshed...
And, lest we forget...
Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)
I Just Wasn't Made For These Times (Heck! Let's just put 'Pet Sounds' up in its entirety...!)
Surf's Up
Cottonfields (no, honestly!)
Fun Fun Fun (single mix)

14. Do You Wanna Dance?
Great cover version, from one of my absolute favourite albums. Check out the extended (up to that magical top F) fade which Brian wails through on the fade. Hit #12 in America.
15. California Girls
Perhaps the greatest introduction to a Beach Boys track, nay, any song which has ever existed. Charted at number three in America with Let Him Run Wild (what a flip-side!), and covered by David Lee Roth or something.
16. Barbara Ann
September 1965. I would hazard a guess that this is the ONLY album of its kind to exist. And this was the Regents cover which made this album one of the most interesting in the catalogue. With Dean and Brian sharing lead vocals on the whole track, you either loved the spontineity of it, or were nobbut dead.
17. Heroes and Villains
"You're under arrest." The cry that Smile gives every time I flip it to this track. The fact that you're referring to the version everybody else knows, I'll have to give that some extra thought >grin<
A fantastic track, which starts the grower that is Smiley Smile. Though five of these tracks DID appear on Smile itself, the mixes of each individual track are changed slightly. The original version, when I do flip onto it, doesn't give the same depth and knowledge which I have until after listening to it.
18. When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)
Hate it. Really hate it.
Haha, had you fooled. >gets a stitch from laughing so much<
A very good track, and a single with the later-to-be-canned-from-the-Pet-Sounds-listing "She Knows Me Too Well".
Speaking of which... does anyone have any charting information for this track? Seems it was released during September at some point, and yet peaked during the same week on the 5th September 1964. That's very puzzling.
19. God Only Knows
Magical. Second greatest song in their catalogue.
20. Be True To Your School
Having listened to both versions, I must say that I prefer the album version, in B flat major, to the alternate version in A major... that little technicality out of the way...
The lyrics are great, the harmonies are great, and... >switching versions< the cheerleading is great.

Re: When I Grow Up...
I don't have the exact week-by-week charting Bobo, but it seems you may have a misprint...
It entered the Billboard chart on 5th September 1964, entered the Top 40 two weeks later, and peaked at its eventual #9 three weeks after that, which, if I've done my sums right, would've been 10th October...
Rather basic, I know...but should be of use...
Subject: Re: Rate The Beach Boys Songs
Thanks for the correction. I got my info from http://www.Cabinessence.com.
I trust your information a lot more than I trust theirs, though.

Mm...just had a look there Bobo...I think I've got to the page you were questioning about...
Yes, rather confusingly it does say the single charted on the 5th September - reached #9...but I think someone's naturally assuming you don't want to know when it reached #9...(or something like that...!)
Mind you, pretty dam' info-packed site on the lads...may use it for future reference...thanks...!

My favourite section is the Bootlegs one. Naughty naughty me.
