Classic Rock well, this mor eor less is an umbrella term for a bunch of the other things on here....the counterpart to this is 'modern rock" (you know, INXS, Depeche Mode, Erasure..all the stuff theyre playing on classic rock stations now lol)...it is my favorite genre, but its too broad a genre for me to truely comment on......
Acid Rock ok, heres a better breakdown....but even this can be broken down into 'psychodelic'....acid rock has its good stuff, and it has a few bad things too (thats when the band was taking too much drugs)....overrall there are alot of good stuff from this genre...
Heavy Metal another umbrella term...what era Heavy Metal? you really have to break this down better, because a genre that would include both Black Sabbath AND Limp Bizket has problems.......there is some very good heavy metal, and some very crappy heavy metal.....
Speed Metal beleive it or not, these bands are speed metal: Van Halen, Antrax, Megadeth, and Metallica ./..and since I love all three, it is a good genre...for the most part...there is also alot of crap in it, like Slayer, and sepultora
Pop ok, this is a bigger umbrella term than classic rock..this is like saying "rate this: Music".......
Punk Rock Ill assume this is 1977 punk and its proto punk and post punk and new wave derivitives.....if so, then for the most part it is a good genre.....there is also some crap here, like The Sex pistols.....
Blues Im listening to it right now lol.....some Keb' Mo'.....anyway, an awesome genre, but also an umbrella term, but its all good....whether its Southern Delta Blues, or Chicago blues or blues rock.....
Techno while its not one of my "Awful 4", its still pretty bad...for the most part....
House this is the same thing....just pure garbage
Club garbage
Jazz well, umbrella term again......a great genre none the less
Adult Contemporary like what? theres some good stuff and some crap.....
Eclectic what?
Rap again not part of my "Awful 4" but close....it really depends on the artist
Hip-Hop its the same thing....
R&B what era? another umbrella term
Country everyone badmouths country...i refuse to do so....there is some really great stuff in the genre.....
Oldies well, this is just a wrong term...what goes in this genre? Doo-wop? Motown? 60s pop? they have their own genres
what about:
Motown
Doo-wop
60s pop
New Wave
new Romantic
Grunge
Proto Punk
Garage rock
Modern Rock
the "awful 4" :
Bubble gum pop
Pop Punk
Emo (or Scremo)
and Nu Metal
also:
disco
Blues rock
Southern Rock
Country rock
Synth pop
rockabilly
Soul
Glam rock
Hair Metal
Death metal
Thrash
Oi!
Ska
Blue grass
Big Band

Well Billy I wasn't trying to go into this to deep, all I was intending to find out from this is what the average person thinks of these types of music.
And I didn't want to put all those types of music on here, because that's a lot.

Classic Rock- Various types of Metal, Acid, or Soft rock from the 60's and 70's era.
(ie. Led Zeppelin, Santana, Queen, Jimi Hendrix)
Acid Rock- A type of music with hardcore distortion, and lightning fast riffs. Also when the band members do LSD "Acid".
(ie. Jimi Hendrix)
Heavy Metal- Screaming, guitars, and drums. ;)
Speed Metal- Basically heavy metal except faster.
(ie. Slayer)
Punk Rock- A type of music to define the generation of "punks". Maybe someone else could describe this one better for you. :-/
Subject: Re: Rate these types of music
To tell you the truth I am really confused on what fits into these classifications but the ones that I am fairly sure of and do like are these.
Classic Rock
Heavy Metal
Adult Contemporary
Techno (80's techno)
Oldies
Speed Metel - From Billy_Florio's definition of Speed Metal I give it a thumbs up
How about Grunge...I know many here do not care for grunge but I do take a liking to that type of music.
And Folk Rock? Or does that fit into Adult Contemporary/Oldies?

There are many little subcategories for music, such as folk-rock and anything else you can tack 'rock' to the back of. But to me Folk stands out as a category of its own, with such artists as The Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul & Mary, and Joan Baez.
My rating for Folk would be Very good. :D

Classic Rock
While I respect and even enjoy it, I just get kinda tired of it getting all the glory even to this day. I do however like to consider classic rock as its own genre, so you could say that it still exists with bands like The White Stripes.
Acid Rock
I don't know. Madonna mentioned it once(Music), but I don't think that's acid rock?
Heavy Metal
It's pretty cool. But just not my thing.
Speed Metal
not very familiar with it.
Pop
This is a tough one. If by 'pop' you mean Britney Spears, then that would get a 2 by me. 1 view of pop is music with a great fun hook that you can bop along to, and can include bits of any genre, or no genre; Love Shack is a great example of this kinda pop. In some parts of Europe, pop is more like electronic dance music, sometimes called Europop. Sometimes, all popular music can be called pop. I guess it depends on what people think.
Punk Rock
The music that's out today that's called punk rock just seems so commercial. Most of it gets a 2. The older punk rock, I'm actually not too familiar with either. But my personal favorite is Green Day. Then it all degraded itself into the punk rock of today. WHERE'S THE PUNK?? I guess it's otherwise ok, if done right.
Blues
It's OK from what I heard, but I haven't heard much to remember it.
Techno
This is actually a sub-genre to electronica. Many people get confused about all the sub-genres, and as a fan, it does upset me. Amber isn't techno, DJ Sammy isn't techno; Crystal Method is. They can, however, be remixed as techno. Anyway, techno is darker than most club-dance music and relies more on synths than soundfonts of something like actual guitars, but it's dancier than electronica itself. It's sort of the alternative rock version of dance music.
House
This has more popular elements, such as a guitar riff, or vocals. Try listening for Kreo's "Burn For You"; that's a good example, cuz I don't really know how else to explain it.
Club
I think this could be the same as house. I'm not sure.
Jazz
It's smooth, sounds nice. But I don't know much else about it, except for a few songs & covers I heard on the radio during work experience in high school.
Adult Contemporary
Eclectic
...what?
Rap
I view rap as something darker, while hip-hop as something lighter and more fun. The older stuff from the 80s-1998 was OK, but modern rap/hip-hop is just so... BLAH!
R&B
R&B is the same way, with a few exceptions. It's basically all sex and no soul now IMHO, but I really like Alicia Keyes' new one, "You Don't Know My Name".
Country
Very simplistic, rustic, most anyone can relate to it if they sit through it. I respect it because it's been around since the 1900's(decade, not just century), but I don't really care for the yokelly sound of most of it anyway. Pop-country is OK though; it's good to have so the pop audience can enjoy country better than they'd thought.
Oldies
I have sort of the same view as classic rock, except groups like Huey Lewis or even Hanson would be a continuation of it as a genre.
A few genres I'd like to add are:
*Trance - another sub-genre of electronica. How to explain it... Just think of rock, then think of Duran Duran's "Ordinary World"(its dreamy feeling). Then replace 'rock' with electronica, and that's trance.
*New Wave - It's funny how I expected to see this on here but I didn't. This is SO the site for it:P But that's oK.
*Classical - It's actually really good to listen to. I listen to some of it, but mostly motion picture scores. I hear it helps babies' minds grow.
Subject: Re: Rate these types of music
I became too overwhelmed with the many different categories and possible sub-categories. There could be many more of those untapped as of yet, "Classical", "Opera" and "Gangsta Rap" being three examples.
It would be accurate if I just said that I like a little of almost everything, except "Death Metal", "Thrash Metal", "Speed Metal" and "Gangsta Rap".
Subject: Re: Rate these types of music
Now That I look at this months after I posted this, I kinda made it confusing with all the sub genres. sorry...
