Subject: Re: 1984 Song Rating
Nnnnggh...song..rating...nnngh..must...keep away...!
Oh, what the hell...where are we? '84...right...
Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun 4 - happy, bouncy number...its only drawback being the extremely suspect movie that it 'inspired'...
Madonna - Holiday 3 - for overplayment...(it's also been re-issued here about half-a-dozen times!)...Madge's first big one (oo-er!) in the days when she played second fiddle to Cyndi in terms of popularity...
Police - King Of Pain 3 - not one of their stronger ones...sort of went out with a whimper rather than a bang...
Nik Kershaw - Wouldn't It Be Good 4 - 'man with the snood' wrote and performed some catchy stuff, this being one of 'em...
Nena - 99 Red Balloons 3 - bit of a clumsy effort by the 'girl with the pit hair', probably due to a suspect translation...US had the original German lyrics...
Rockwell - Somebody's Watching Me 3 - Berry Gordy's son couldn't really fail by getting some bloke called Michael Jackson to sing on this...trouble was, it was very ho-hum...
Van Halen - Jump 4 - good ol' rawker...the first big (UK) hit for the band when they featured big-haired Dave Lee Roth...
Bananarama - Robert De Niro's Waiting 3 - rather strange subject material for a song...was about the best they done...
Depeche Mode - People Are People 2 - Dep's ode to tolerance...but, oh dear...what clumsy lyrics...
Chaka Khan - Ain't Nobody 3 - loved it at the time, and a good performance to boot...but marks deducted for allowing itself to re-mixed, sampled, re-sampled, etc...
Phil Collins - Against All Odds 4 - nice, tender ballad from Phil, only spoilt by the unnecessary (and unsubtle) drum fill halfway-in...
Pointer Sisters - Automatic 4 - wobbled the leg to this at the time...couldn't understand why Ruth Pointer sounded like a man on this...
Duran Duran - The Reflex 4 - Duran back on form after a couple of extremely dodgy singles...
Kenny Loggins - Footloose 3 - his only real hit here...a bit dated...he has done better...
Wham - Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go 4 - criminally infectious 60's-sounding stuff from the boys...
Smiths - Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now 4 - marvellous stuff despite the tongue-in-cheek title...beautiful guitar riffing from Marr...
Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Two Tribes 3 - 7 inch single, 12 inch single, re-mixed 12 inch single, book, T-shirt, eternity at #1, more Trevor Horn production work...and with all those factors, no wonder it sounds ho-hum now...
Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time 4 - good effort in a completely different style from Cyndi...
Tina Turner - What's Love Got To Do With It 4 - Tina staging a remarkable comeback (complete with 'that' wig!) - supremely confident handling of a confident song...
Black Lace - Agadoo 1 - I'd rather Aga-don't...!
Laura Branigan - Self Control 4 - another continental song that Laura made her own...good performance...
Bluebells - Young At Heart 3 - dead-corny song with lots of fiddles on it...much better from them was 'I'm Falling'...
George Michael - Careless Whisper 4 - bit of an overplayed one, but a fine song nonetheless...yes Rice, he did do this whilst with Wham, but over here it was billed as a solo single (I believe it was billed as Wham in the US, which is where the confusion lies...)
Queen - I Want To Break Free 4 - another lot making something of a 'comeback'...still a very strong song...
Alphaville - Big In Japan 2 - huge Euro-pop hit which plodded along...not very memorable...
U2 - Pride (In The Name Of Love) 4 - about the best they achieved to my ears...everything after was all marked 'self-indulgent'...
Giorio Moroder/Phil Oakey - Together In Electric Dreams 4 - one of those cases where the song was bigger than the film (anyone seen it?)...catchy beyond all reason...
Cars - Drive 4 - this was its first outing - it returned the following year due to its use at Live Aid on a harrowing video - fine stuff, and quite a change of style from the lads...
Wham - Freedom 3 - more 60's-type froth...not too struck on this one...
Eurythmics - Sexcrime 3 - from yet another film! This sounded a bit too cluttered and over-produced...
Madonna - Like A Virgin 4 - global domination starts here! A landmark song in all senses...
Nik Kershaw - The Riddle 3 - not his best...he started to rapidly run out of ideas soon afterwards...
Foreigner - I Want To Know What Love Is 4 - good song by them (although I didn't care much for it at the time...), quiet build-up leads into a full-blown 'gospel chorus' ending...
Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas 4 - a fine concept, and a fine record...that aside, has anything been learned from it all...

I like the majority of that! Paul, I've seen the film 'Electric Dreams' - it's so laughable but the song was incredible.
I am one of the few people who loves 'Agadoo' by Black Lace. I think I'm going to get myself certified.

To verify for those who have questioned...
Careless Whisper was a solo effort by George, though technically he was still with Wham (well, just Andrew really) at the time.
