I just really went of Spandau Ballet by this point in their evolution, I guess. They started out as the ultra-cool sound of the New Romantic movement, something really interesting like "To Cut A Long Story Short" and I also like the funk sound on "Chant No.1". However, by the time they started trotting out "True" and "Gold" I felt they were much more commercially oriented and turning into MoR pop which doesn't really inspire me. So I gave it a zero based on my disappointment with the direction Spandau Ballet took, maybe, rather than the song itself.

Well, there's nothing new there I suppose. I heard some American guy on the radio recently who's written a book about how to succeed with women, and his premise is that although women are initially interested by looks, they are equally impressed by humour and confidence, or at least the illusion of confidence. Plus in Billy Joel's case, undoubted talent. And wealth. Any ladies like to comment on this!?
So good luck to Billy and Christie (err, on second thoughts it's too late for that....).
What was really funny was the look on my Dad's face when we told him that Billy was married to Christie Brinkley!
Subject: Re: 1983 Song Rating
1983...when I managed to escape one rat-race (school) and land head-first in another (work...but at least they paid me for turning up!)
Men At Work - Down Under 3 - total blanket airplay, so it does tend to grind...but at least it put 'Vegemite' on the rock map...!
Eddy Grant - Electric Avenue 3 - marginally better than 'I Don't Wanna Dance'...but what someone done to it via a recent 'remix' was hilariously awful...!
Kajagoogoo - Too Shy 3 - very slick piece of dance/pop which had us all guessing what kind of wildlife Limahl had grafted on the top of his head...!
Michael Jackson - Billie Jean 4 - much better than the tiresome thing he did with Macca the previous year...the bass riff was nabbed by thousands, the album bought by millions...
Toto - Africa 4 - their best by a mile...
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams 3 - awfully dated sound with those synths...a bit dreary, but well-remembered...
Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse Of The Heart 2 - with her vocal cords freshly rubbed down with steel wool, Bonnie makes a comeback...big song, big hair, big bore really...
David Bowie - Let's Dance 4 - probably about the best thing he'd done in ages...shame it couldn't last...
Duran Duran - Is There Something I Should Know 4 - another piece of effortless pop which they could bang out with free abandon...very stylish...
Eurythmics - Love Is A Stranger 2 - more synth doodlings...this just meandered along with no real purpose...
Michael Jackson - Beat It 3 - a bit tiresome now, but suited the time perfectly...I didn't even know who Eddie Van Halen was before this!
Heaven 17 - Temptation 4 - another of those dance/pop crossover affairs...played almost everywhere, I'm automatically transported back over 20 years when I hear it!
Spandau Ballet - True 4 - same with this...what they'll eternally be remembered for...
Yazoo - Nobody's Diary 2 - their weakest effort...
Mike Oldfield - Moonlight Shadow 3 - a good pop song, but what's-her-name's voice spoils it...
Police - Every Breath You Take 4 - another one that's had more than its fair share of comments recently!
Irene Cara - Flashdance 3 - not as good as 'Fame' but okay...don't remember the film, was it any good?
Freeez - IOU 3 - terribly dated piece of 'hip-hop' from a band who started out as funksters! Hilarious to see people trying to 'body-pop' to this with all the grace and agility of a sumo wrestler...!
Paul Young - Wherever I Lay My Hat 3 - good at the time, but it outstayed its welcome...the fade-out went on and on and on...not sure whether the Tempts did this, Billy - but I know Marvin Gaye's version...
Bananarama - Cruel Summer 2 - never really been a fan of the Bananas...turgid...
Every Day I Write The Book - Elvis Costello 2 - much-loved by the critics at the time, but lacks something to me...(a tune, perhaps?!!)
Wham - Club Tropicana 4 - compared to the previous three Wham efforts, about the most half-decent tune George wrote up to that point...
New Order - Blue Monday 4 - the remnants of Joy Division + 1 emerged in '83 with this belter...with a computerised drum pattern so intense, it could cut your speakers to ribbons if played too loud...!
Spandau Ballet - Gold 3 - extremely polished stuff...was it downhill from here?
UB40 - Red Red Wine 3 - a good idea at the time, but lost its appeal very quickly...the arrangement's very basic, and they all sound as if they're about to fall asleep...!
Culture Club - Karma Chameleon 2 - just plain overplayed...you know the writing's on the wall when people from several generations previous start to like your material! My Gran adored this!! Although to her ears, the title was "Become A Comedian"! Bless...!
Eurythmics - Who's That Girl 4 - brooding, sinister thing which bettered the previous efforts...about the best they done...
Lionel Richie - All Night Long (All Night) 4 - bouncy, dance-a-long stuff from Lionel...made a change from the ballads...
Siouxsie & The Banshees - Dear Prudence 2 - never really got into this group (although 'Hong Kong Garden' was good) - below-par performance of a below-par Beatles song...
The Safety Dance - Men Without Hats 3 - slightly off-the-wall thing...rarely heard now...
Billy Joel - Uptown Girl 4 - catapulted him into the big league over here...clever Frankie Valli pastiche, spoilt slightly by Westlife sucking all the life out of it...
Cure - The Love Cats 3 - another group I couldn't get into...a more accessable style from their previous efforts...
Smiths - This Charming Man 3 - not their best, but okay...
Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax 4 - more 'production' than 'performance', but it remains one of the defining '80's records...
Howard Jones - What Is Love 4 - cool piece of synth-pop from the spiky-haired one...
The mime-artist/bondage freak that used to appear with Howard was known only as Jed - probably a product of Thatcher's Yoof Training Scheme...
...and now I offically need a life! I'm going up the pub...!

Great synth song from Annie Lennox and co - 4
