Subject: 1970 Lyrics Quiz [REMAINING ANSWERS REVEALED]
Written By: Henk on 11/25/15 at 1:38 pm
Yeah, well, so I thought it would be fun to do a quiz again.
I know it's been quite a while, but I hope there's still people left to play...
Most of the 50 songs in this quiz charted in 1970 in one or more of the following countries:
USA, UK, Canada, Australia, The Netherlands.
Title and artist, please! One point for a complete answer, half a point for title or artist only.
Limit = OFF now.
Please no cheating... Hope you enjoy! :)
Scores so far:
10.0 loki 13
6.5 GypsyRoad
4.0 bookmistress4ever / CatwomanofV / gibbo
3.5 nally
3.0 maddog
2.5 Mitch Kramer
1.0 annimal / badfinger-fan / Foo Bar
0.5 karen

26. The song is titled One Night Stand. The band (3, 5, 8 ) were English. Members included Jimmy Bilsbury (who went on to co-found the Les Humphries Singers), Albert Hammond , Kevin Godley and Lol Creme at some point in time.
28. The band was named after an American utility company (7, 3, 3, 8 ). The song (Are You Ready) hit #14 in US charts.
30. This song (5, 5, 2) by Irish band Taste, which questions current affairs, did not make a dent in charts.
32. Famous rock band (3, 8 ) that included Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. The song (9, 4) with a highly topical subject, hit #16 in US and Australia, and #4 in Canada.

40. Band (6), named after its founder and front man, formerly a member of The Zombies. They recorded the original version of God Gave Rock And Roll To You. The song (10) is considered controversial for its choice of subject (an underage woman).
41. The singer (3, 6) died about a year ago. He rose to fame with his performance at the famous Woodstock festival. The song is Cry Me A River.
43. Lead singer of probably the oldest rock’n’roll band in the world (4, 6). The song (4, 4, 6) is part of the score to the movie Performance, in which the singer plays the part of the sung character.

Is 7. also Cecila - Simon & Garfunkel?
Errm... No. "Cecilia" is in there (#44), but Cat already got that. And #7 is already answered by Peter.

I figured a lyrics quiz (especially a 1970 lyrics quiz) would be tougher than an audio quiz (of any year), but I hadn't realized it would be this tough. Maybe I'd better make my next quiz a 1980 lyrics quiz. ;)
BTW: you're spot-on for #47. :) Not a big hit anywhere, but a great song anyway!

Welcome to my quizzes, Mitch! :) I don't think we've met before.
Your answers were "caught in the quote box", as we like to say, but let me see...
You're right on #4 and #27, but unfortunately Jeff (nally) beat you to it, so I can't give you any points on those.
#8 and #37 are also right, and that earns you two points.
As for #13: Cat Stevens is not the artist I'm looking for. I know he wrote the song, but he wasn't the first to record/release it as a single.

I can give you #23, because it's completely correct.
As for #17: right song, but not the artist I had in mind. I'm looking for the 1970 (original) artist.
I feel I should give you #01, even though it's not the artist I had in mind (I was thinking of Arrival). The two versions were released less than a year apart, and Terry Reid is the original artist, so yeah... no need for me to be nitpicking.
This also made me reconsider my initial rejection of Cat Stevens as the singer for #13. I was in fact looking for Jimmy Cliff (who was the first to release a single of this song), but for similar reasons I've decided to accept Cat Stevens and award both Cat and Mitch half a point.

I *should* have remembered the Jaggerz, because they are from (and still popular on the radio) from my (adopted) home town of Pittsburgh. They still play that song on the classic rock radio station here quite frequently. The lead singer, Donnie Iris, had some success as a solo artist in the 80s, and yes, they play those songs too. lol ;D

That's the one
The funny thing is that even with the answer right in front of me and having heard it hundreds of time, I still thought the only lyrics to "Immigrant Song" were "AaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAa-AH!" and maybe something about ice and snow.
I don't know if that means I'm just lame or if Led Zep was so awesome that the guitar riff/drum beat/chorus just competely obliterated the rest of the song in my mind. Probably just means I'm lame. But thanks to you and congratulations to the quiz winner!

based on the clue
#16 is by Barry Ryan and might be called Science
It is Barry Ryan, but the song title is not correct. According to the Oxford Dictionaries, I'm looking for "Art, objects, or design considered to be in poor taste because of excessive garishness or sentimentality, but sometimes appreciated in an ironic or knowing way."
But thanks to you and congratulations to the quiz winner!
lol Same here.
Well, I only found out after googling for the lytics, so I'm in the same boat. ;)

Just guessing because I seem to be drawn to the garish arts. ;D ::) I'll say either crafty or kitsch or garish or something along those lines.

And we have a winner! :D "Kitsch" it is, and kitsch it shall be.

It doesn't look like this one's going to get finished any time soon (where's Paul when you need him?), so I'll give you the remaining ones:
17. I wear a suit of sadness made by experience
19. I'm gettin' black looks from the big white man
20. It's a buck dancer's choice my friend
26. One thing I will never be is the second in line
28. People say that He won't come
30. Should I be standing on a chair?
33. So you moved out up to Europe
34. Staff in his hand, and a dog that could see
38. The oak tree where you carved my name a year ago now
40. Those holidays when I showed you what I had
41. Told me love was too plebeian
49. You'll be a hero overnight
50. You're the most expensive perfume with the scent of morning air

It was a wonderful quiz, as usual. I didn't know any of the rest of the groups or songs, I am quite lucky to have gotten what I did after the clues (only because I like crossword puzzles. ;) )
Thank you for your efforts, it is always a good time.
