Subject: Everybody Dance Now! - Dance Quiz 1987-2000 Volume 3 [ANSWERS REVEALED]
Written By: Henk on 02/23/13 at 7:54 am
So there it is - the final batch! Took me long enough...
Another 45 tracks from 1987-2000 era that got people going on the dancefloor.
You know what to do next...
Limit = OFF to start with (as usual). Have fun, and behave... ;)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2LSgZyTKnk
Alrighty...Have some hints!
06. This guy is basically a OHW. The song hints to a place or state where those who believe will live eternally (and I don't mean Heaven). For Jews it's Israel.
08. They Called It Acieed, and That's The Way Of The World... so let's dance.
09. (Hard to find hints for this one!)
10. This was the follow-up to the band's successful medley of a Peter Frampton and a Lynyrd Skynyrd song.
14. Dutch/Belgian co-production (Eddy de Clercq and Gert van Veen). The track contains heavy sampling from Ellis-D's My Loleatta (Dish Apella).
15. Another Dutch dance act, who also scored hits with "Dreams (Will Come Alive)", "Never Alone" and "Come Take My Hand".
16. Belgian duo Patrick De Meyer and Oliver Abeloos, with the tune that brought them fame. The follow-up "Nocturne" fared better in US dance charts, however.
18. The author Herman Melville is supposedly the artists' great-great-great-granduncle, hence his stage name. This was his first successful release, with many to follow.
19. This Nigerian born Swedish dentist had other hits (in Europe) with songs like "Hello Africa", "No Coke" and "Sing Hallelujah".
23. The artist may be better known for "Loops & Things".
24. Both Pointer Sisters and Van Halen had hits with the same title, but this one's different. Warm it up, boys!
28. A Swedish singer, who also collaborated with Rob'n'Raz (on "Got To Get") and Dr. Alban (on "Hello Africa"). She needs some abracadabra and hocus pocus.
33. A cascade of music, from the depths of the water that divides Europe from America.
36. This was a Dutch #1 hit, the week one half of the duo died. The guys that appeared in the video later became known as the Party Animals.
37. A cover of a Fugees song by a Dutch/UK dance act. They also did a cover of "Ain't Nobody".
38. It's José David Peñín Montilla, better known under the anglicized form David Penn, in collaboration with Enrique P. and Juan Carlos Molina. It's a mode of transport that doesn't ride during daytime.
40. Don't forget this guy! It is Scottish DJ Alexis 'Lex' Blackmore, with a track built around a sample from the live version of Marlena Shaw's "Woman Of The Ghetto".
41. A bad dream that's been haunting your mind, from the hands of Italian producer Alberto Bertapelle.
43. Dutch producer Erik de Hey, using an alias (also the name of a discotheque in The Hague). The song title is a word play on merry-go-round.

02. The Only Way Is Up - Yazz & The Plastic Population

okay, I've figured out maybe half a dozen of them, but I know, I'm only allowed to answer 4 of them for now, so here goes...
#4 is "Blue Monday" by New Order.
#20 is "Please Don't Go" by KWS.
#26 is "What Is Love" by Haddaway.
And #29 is "Don't Turn Around" by Ace of Base.
Great quiz, once again, Henk. O0

Okay then, "Blue Monday '88" for #4?
And about #20, I do not know who else could have done it around that time. (Also, I remember from listening to the clip that the singer sounds different than that of KWS.) Hopefully someone else knows.

Interestingly, there were two almost identical cover versions released around the same time. The KWS version never was a hit in mainland Europe, but the other version was.

Thanks. ;) I had remembered that there was a version released in 1988 (which I hear most often on the radio anyways) which had the year listed in the title; some sources show the whole year, others the last two digits only, so I didn't know for sure which designation was officially correct.

2. Yazz and the Plastic Population, The Only Way Is Up, and it's probably the original, not the marginally-NSFW-if-your-workplace-is-full-of-tightasses Phoenix Nights Vs Yazz version found on Mastermix 198, but hey, who's counting?)
22. Shamen, Ebeneezer Goode, a thinly-veiled guide as to how early-90s clubbers might consume MDMA somewhat more safely.
39. Chemical Brothers, Setting Sun
42. Run DMC vs. Jason Nevins, It's Like That
And with the limit at four, that's the way it is.

Hi Henk...phew, just got in before the limit is lifted!
This was the era in which my wife and I were bringing up babies and small children, rather than going out dancing, so I didn't recognise too many of those left...
#27 Out Of Space - The Prodigy
#35 Push The Feeling On - Nightcrawlers
#45 Zombie Nation - Kernkraft 400
Finally, I think the title for #3 is just "Theme from S Express" - do I get half a point for that?

Here's some early hints:
The artists for #24 recently reunited for a one-time performance, after a 15 year hiatus, to honor Jermaine Dupri.
Herman Melville was supposedly #18's great-great-great-granduncle.
#37 is a cover of a Fugees song.
#36 hit the #1 spot in The Netherlands, the week one half of the duo died.
#19 is actually a Nigerian born Swedish dentist.

13. A Homeboy, A Hippie, and a Funki Dredd, Total Confusion, sampling Public Enemy's Bring the Noise (Funki or Funky? I've seen both used.)
17. Human Resource, Dominator, one of the mixes where the voice is sped up a bit?
There are others that I know I've heard before, but can't quite place right now. Carry on mixing!

I should have gotten at least one of those.
18. Moby, Go
24. Kriss Kross, Jump
I can only get half-credit for those two, because warped gift-wrapped 'em for me :)
11. MC Sar / Real McCoy, It's On You (only because I recognized that it sampled Raze's Break for Love)
19. Dr. Alban - It's My Life (only because of the hint!)
33. Atlantic Ocean - Waterfall (only because of the hint, but thanks! Sweet video!)
And with a pod of dolphins on the screen, I say "so long, and thanks for all the fish..." until the next time.
I know I've heard some of the earlier ones, especially 8, 9, and 14. I think I'm stumped on everything from the high-30s on up, with the exception of #41. I want to say that #41's the Tamperer - If you buy this record - but the more I listen to the track, the wronger I think I am with that guess. I know I've heard those strings somewhere, though.

40 - The BlueBoy, Nightmare (sinister strings mix) (for which I concede half a point to warped for the title, and I owe him karma the next time I show up, because I also found this awesome MLK remix that I'd never heard before, while in the process of confirming it. #6 is the only gospel(ish) track in this quiz, by a guy who's basically a OHW. It reached #56 in UK, but did nothing (much) in US. The title hints to a place or state where those who believe will eventually end up living in eternity - and I don't mean Heaven. For Jews it's Israel.

From the hints, I can get ...
15 | 2 Brothers on the 4th Floor
28 | Leila K
I can't think of any 2 Brothers songs apart from Dreams, but I know I should know others. My CD is buried somewhere

I don't see much point in keeping this open any longer. Here's the remaining answers:
06. Promised Land - Joe Smooth
08. It Is Time To Get Funky - D-Mob
09. Just As Long As I Got You - 101
14. Dish And Tell - House of Venus
15. Can't Help Myself - 2 Brothers on the 4th Floor
16. Anasthasia - T.99
23. Psycho Strings - Jens
28. Open Sesame - Leila K
37. Ready Or Not - The Course
38. Nighttrain - Kadoc
43. Mary Go Wild - Grooveyard

Good quiz Henk. I would not have gotten any of those remaining ones, but I liked what I heard. Must add some of those to my collection 8)

Kicking myself for not getting T.99 / Anasthasia, might have gotten Open Sesame with the hint from you and whistledog, but that's probably all I could have gotten out of what was left. Good game all!
