Subject: 1973 Music Quiz - Volume 2 [Last Answers Revealed]

Written By: Henk on 08/12/12 at 9:43 am

As promised, here's Part 2 of my 1973 music quizzes.
And surprise, surprise...I've somehow managed to make it an audio quiz!
I think/hope this should make it considerably easier for you. ;)

Limit = OFF. No cheating allowed. Good luck everyone! :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEwRLGr-nKg

Hints!
03. Not a hit in US, but the song peaked at #6 in UK and at #20 in The Netherlands.
The lead singer later moved to AC/DC. It’s got nothing to do with me.

05. A hit only in The Netherlands, apparently, for this band that went through numerous changes in lineup.
One of the band members was Gerry Rafferty
. Stealers Wheel.  How time flies…

08. This lady got a Licence To Kill, although this song is about quite the opposite. It peaked at #21 in UK.
      If only eyes could speak.

10. They´re a Melting Pot, this band with lead singer Madeline Bell. The song (about the bad influence Satan has on us)
      peaked at #26 in UK.

18. This song has something in common with songs #27 and #31 in this quiz, and that’s quite OK. The band is Mungo Jerry.

19. A song about little critters (up his trousers). Pavement, yellow crazy, sugar, carpenter, fire… they come in all sorts,
and are generally considered a pest.

23. A US #83, UK #5 and NL #6 hit song for the lead singer of The Who. He’s not keeping anything.

26. You know his brothers (Randy, Tito, Michael…) and sisters (LaToya, Janet…). So I think you should know him as well.

28. I don’t think anyone remembers this song, about a defective heavenly creature. Still peaked at #9 in UK, though.

35. It will come back to you, this brightly colored Australian hunting device.

36. This song seems to be dedicated to one of our Aussie members. The singer – a 7-time winner of Opportunity Knocks
shares his name with an English chef.

37. This is a cover of Snoopy vs. The Red Baron. The cover went to #4 in UK.

39. The song is about returning to the place you live. It went to #36 in US, #4 in UK and #2 in The Netherlands.

44. Maybe you should use your telephone and give him a ring.

45. The band was named after a character from David Copperfield. The song title seems to reflect a rather laidback lifestyle
.

Australia was in a good position musically. We had our own music scene laced heavily with U.S and European/English hits.

Must get creative & build time machine and go to Australia in 1973 and live my life there so that 40 years later I can do better on this quiz.

At least I know 3 of the 4 artists.

Tough luck. :P ;)

But seriously... it happens to me all the time. Dozens of quizzes around here get finished where I didn't know 60-70% of the songs. It's almost inevitable, because plenty of songs that were hits in North America never made it big across the pond, and vice versa. I always try to make a blend (of international hits), but for North Americans I think it's harder (as they usually don't have insight in what is/was big in Europe/Australia).

No worries, there's plenty of songs there I do know.
Bands/Artists like Slade, Wizzard, Mud, did not even have a song in the top 40 in the US and unless you are somewhat of a music buff, you probably never heard of them , and Suzi Quatro's only top 40 is Stumblin' in.  We missed some good stuff in the early 70s. Then again, there's lots of really good Canadian songs I know that the rest of the world missed out on, so it goes both ways.

This quiz helps me discover some new music ( new to me) and I like the Hollies song (#6)  better than "Long cool woman", although they sound similar. I'll have to add that to my selection of songs.  I've always enjoyed British music much, much more than music coming from the USA.

Karma +1.

Just for the record: there's quite a few songs in this quiz that I had never heard / heard of before making this quiz. (I have to use songs that I don't know, because about 50% of songs that I know are in Dutch and therefore not suitable. Not sure if people always realize my handicap...)

This happens to be one of my favorite songs in this quiz too. I can tell you that it only made #39 in US, but it was a #5 hit in The Netherlands. Although the band is from UK, the song didn't chart there.

Not much chance of anybody getting the remaining ones, so...

05. The song is Late Again
08. The singer is Gladys Knight
10. I was looking for By The Devil (I Was Tempted) by Blue Mink
18. The song is Alright, Alright, Alright
36. I was looking for Amanda by Stuart Gillies
37. The band name is The Hotshots.
39. Song title is Goin' Home
44. Song title is Call Me

I might have guessed Gladys Knight I just haven't been able to get back and try....
