Subject: 1972 Audio Quiz (VOLUME 4) [Last Answers Given]

Written By: Henk on 05/14/11 at 2:40 am

This is Volume 4 of my 1972 quizzes. We're nearly done - one more to go after this  ;)

http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/2/17/785141/1972.jpg

Instead of the usual 50 songs, I've put a selection of 60 songs in this volume
and I've also tried to eliminate the really obscure ones.

As usual, some artists are represented twice, and the limit = OFF to start with.

So...once again, good luck and have fun! :)

Hints!
06. This singer had a string of hits between 1965 and 1975. Odd how he seems to have faded into complete oblivion...
He once was drowning in the sea of love, but here he seems to have lost his good fortune.
07. The only chart entry for this singer. He shares his last name with a (RC) president and his first name with a boxer,
infamous for biting. The song is a US State.
11. A vocal trio that only lasted four years. They had a #1 hit with Want Ads. This was one of their last chart entries.
17. The singer (who died in 2005) had hits with Turn Back The Hands Of Time and Can I Change My Mind.
The song is about how you don't know what you got till it's gone.
18. It's all gossip...by two men and two women. Their only other Hot 100 entry was I'll Be The Other Woman.
19. It's not Natasha, it ain't the Dixie Cups nor the Belle Stars... This guy could be a medic.
25. Her biggest Hot 100 hits were Hurts So Good and Ask Me What You Want, but this one only made #42.
28. One of the last chart entries for this legendary band that spent a record 307 straight weeks on the Billboard charts
in 1967 - 1972 period. This song is set at an airport.
31. The only chart entry for a band founded by a former member of Yes (he was replaced by Steve Howe).
Well, we all have to start somewhere...
32. Artist: see #6. This song just missed the Top 10 in US. Title is similar to a popular Huey Lewis song.
35. These guys had numerous hits, including Fight The Power, Love The One You're With and It's Your Thing.
This wasn't as successful, reaching only #24.
46. He likes to move on up. The song (that peaked at #4 in US!!) was rerecorded by the same artist in 1990,
     featuring Ice-T.
50. A circus act by a guy who also performed Lady Blue.
53. Maybe we should kiss and say goodbye, but remember that all we have is the here and now.
55. It could be after midnight, but he's just not telling the truth.
60. His sister Suzi was the more popular/successful one. This song, that missed the Hot 100, is about family
     entertainment in a travelling tent.

I think in addition to the 4 named There are maybe 7 I know that have already been named.  I may know more of the unnamed songs but only 2 or 3 sounded familiar and not familiar enough for me to come up with a concrete answer....

Been a long time Henk...to be honest I was never really a big fan of prog rock in the 1970s but many of my friends were. So I ended up listening to loads of Yes, Genesis (in their 70s era not the 80s "pop" era), Barclay James Harvest, Caravan etc. not because I'd chosen to but because it was just there in the background. Some of it was great though, Pink Floyd of course being my all time favourite.

I was gonna say I had the Canadian ones down pat, but 'So Long Dixie' was in the BS&T period where David Clayton-Thomas had left the group, so at this point, they had no ties to Canada

Okay... I relistened to what's left and can't find much ... :-\\  It seems that most of those that are left are by R&B artists and may not have reached the Aussie popular charts back then. Only the songs by the really big R7B artists made it over here (from the US). The U.S. had many charts Popular, R&B, Country etc. It is possible that some of these did better on the minor charts than the mainstream. :-\\

#37 sounds like Jerry Reed ... but no idea of the song.

Yes, it is Jerry Reed. :) The song title has a US State name in it, which also happens to be the name of a band. ;)
And #38 is also correct.

Sitting here mulling over the hints, trying to remember the 70's music and trying my damnedest not to use
a search engine, I think I've come up with another.

#6...Pool Of Bad Luck....Joe Simon?

Correctamundo!

Henk I don't know how I missed this one in my first listen through, nor how I missed it in the subsequent listen throughs,
nor how I missed it in the hints until now. Being a huge prog rock fan I should know the members of Yes past and present
and what they have done in other bands, so I give you Peter Banks and Tony Kaye in.

#31...Small Beginnings....Flash?

The important thing is: you got there in the end. ;)

Don't give up on it just yet...I'll be looking in again later!

I wonder when this 'later' is gonna be... :-\\

Look guys... I don't have much time left before I'm moving, and I don't know when I'll be online again after that. So, I'm giving you until Thursday, okay?

I am totally clueless with the tracks and the clues, so take care with you move.

Based on your hints, #60 is 'Circus (What I Am)' by Michael Quatro.  I would never have known this to hear it, but I always knew that song existed by it's title.

You got it! :) Actually, I never even knew the song until I heard it. ;D
I think it's quite catchy and should've been a bigger hit, but critics dismiss it because apparently it's too far off of his other works.

I don't see Paul or anyone else coming up with any more answers for this quiz, so let's wrap it up...

07. The only chart entry for this singer. He shares his last name with a (RC) president and his first name with a boxer,
infamous for biting. The song is a US State.
          Louisiana - Mike Kennedy

11. A vocal trio that only lasted four years. They had a #1 hit with Want Ads. This was one of their last chart entries.
The Day I Found Myself - Honey Cone

17. The singer (who died in 2005) had hits with Turn Back The Hands Of Time and Can I Change My Mind.
The song is about how you don't know what you got till it's gone.
I Had It All The Time - Tyrone Davis

18. It's all gossip...by two men and two women. Their only other Hot 100 entry was I'll Be The Other Woman.
          Hearsay - The Soul Children

19. It's not Natasha, it ain't the Dixie Cups nor the Belle Stars... This guy could be a medic.
          Iko Iko - Dr. John

25. Her biggest Hot 100 hits were Hurts So Good and Ask Me What You Want, but this one only made #42.
My Man, A Sweet Man - Millie Jackson

28. One of the last chart entries for this legendary band that spent a record 307 straight weeks on the Billboard charts
in 1967 - 1972 period. This song is set at an airport.
The Runway - The Grass Roots

32. Artist: see #6. This song just missed the Top 10 in US. Title is similar to a popular Huey Lewis song.
Power Of Love - Joe Simon

35. These guys had numerous hits, including Fight The Power, Love The One You're With and It's Your Thing.
This wasn't as successful, reaching only #24.
Pop That Thang - Isley Brothers

46. He likes to move on up. The song (that peaked at #4 in US!!) was rerecorded by the same artist in 1990,
      featuring Ice-T.
          Superfly - Curtis Mayfield

50. A circus act by a guy who also performed Lady Blue.
          Tight Rope - Leon Russell

53. Maybe we should kiss and say goodbye, but remember that all we have is the here and now.
One Life To Live - The Manhattans

Nice work Henk.  I obviously had a less mature taste in music (when I was 12). But ... at least I can say I didn't know any of the unsolved tunes.

Dang, I should have read the #11 hint more closely.  I knew Honey Cone did 'Want Ads', but can't say as I know 'The Day I Found Myself'.  Nice song though

I also know all these artists, but not with these songs.  Good quiz though.  I love a  good challenge.

There are two things I best know Millie Jackson for:  'Act of War' with Elton John, and that album she did where the cover shows her sitting on a toilet taking a sh*t
