Subject: Another 1970's (ish) lyrics quiz (COMPLETED)
Written By: gibbo on 03/14/11 at 5:26 am
Hi all.... Here are some songs that I liked in the 70's. Some of the songs may be covers...but I'm looking for the song and artist who had a big hit with the song in the 70's.
Being in Australia, it's possible that some of these songs may have actually been from 1969. :-\\ ... or conversely, they may have not been a hit in your country until 1980. Either way...they were 1970's hits on my radio!!! :) They should be pretty easy as there are no obscure songs in this list.
Because there are 80 songs I'll start you off with a Completed. Apologies in advance... as I will only be able to check back on a daily basis to advise if you're correct (or not) and tally the scores.
I'll also apologize for my taste in music in the 70's. There's a bit of everything... ;)
Okay....let the games begin! :)

Goodness me....So far all answers are correct. Unfortunately, I need to go to work now and won't have an opportunity to update scores for 10 or so hours (I have 3 weeks contract work).
Judging by the answers...I made it all too easy! ;D But I deliberately chose well known songs.... ;)
This quiz took me about 4 hours to put together (all done yesterday).

Lovely quiz Peter! That's a huge amount of work you got there. Which is why I take years to do a quiz of my own. I think I've done a total of two in all the years I've been here. lol
If you could see my youtube favorites list, it's chock-full of 70s goodness. I adore the decade of music, so hopefully I'll get one or two right here:
33. Slow Dancin' - Johnny Rivers

I haven't heard of Jim Capaldi's version. I loved Nazareth's hard edge to the song (with a great guitar). :)

Only 9 to go. At least 5 of these were big hits from popular artists/bands.
If I have to ... I'll add some more lyrics (before any hints are given)...

Oops...nearly missed this post. Sorry 'bout that!! Both correct ladybug. Springfield had a great debut album 9with a couple of hits) and then got all tied up in contract legalities and didn't have another hit until 1981 (??) with Jessie's Girl (and oh what a hit it was too).

Only one to go now.... and it was America's best selling band of the 70's... Their first Greatest Hits album (which contained this song) has sold over 29 million copies.

There's about ten songs or so that I've never heard of in this quiz. I'm guessing they never made it to our charts, but I could be wrong.
Either way, this just shows I should pay more attention to the lyrics. ;)

I was hoping that by choosing fairly big hits most of them had made it OS (to Europe). Even the Rick Springfield hit (based on your knowledge of' What Would the Children Think' ... in your audio quiz). :)
Can you give any hints on sites to visit to check Dutch TV shows and songs (and particularly hits from the US, UK etc that made it over there)? :)

You picked the right one. 'Speak To The Sky' did make bubbling-under section of our Top 40, whereas 'What Would The Children Think' didn't.
That's not to say I know/knew these songs... As I found out while making my 1972 quiz, there's a plethora of (good) songs that I've never heard before.
Can you give any hints on sites to visit to check Dutch TV shows and songs (and particularly hits from the US, UK etc that made it over there)? :)
Unfortunately, there's no easy-to-use site for Dutch music charts history (unlike US or UK). You'll have to buy the book "Hitdossier". The latest edition came with a CD which allowed you to download the entire contents of the book, along with a search engine and chart info not in the book, to your computer. It also provided you the opportunity for downloading updates, but I haven't used that option so far.
As for tv shows and series...man, that's even harder. There are some sites that I've used in the past for my "TV Tunes" audio quizzes to locate/download tv tunes, but I've forgotten which ones. And besides, I think most of them specialized in the 1970's only.
I don't think there's one site that has it all (i.e. a comprehensive listing of tv shows and series that aired in the Netherlands from the 1950's onward). You'll have to check each and every one individually, I'm afraid, and hope there's a Wiki entry for them.
