Subject: Songs That Peaked At #15 (In Holland) - Lyrics Quiz! [LAST ANSWERS GIVEN]

Written By: Henk on 11/23/10 at 3:31 am

So I've been rummaging and ransacking the Dutch Top 40 archives again,
looking for a new subject...and I came up with this:
songs that peaked at #15 in Dutch charts (between 1965 and 1995).
Let's see if you can name them all... Limit is OFF to start with.

Have fun, and as always: no cheating, please. :)

Hints!
05. A UK #4 hit for this band that had international hits with Lazy Sunday and Itchycoo Park.
06. This song about celestial bodies dates from 1991. The band is just crimson.
08. I fear this song wasn’t released as a single in UK or US. It also dates from 1991.The band are on the dole. No wonder they’re crying.
09. No one? I’m surprised. The female singer has scored a long string of international hits (starting in the 1980’s), and this is one of them (UK #5, US #3).
But perhaps I should’ve kept that to myself.
11. Song didn’t chart in UK and US, but I still think you oughta know it. Think Woodstock.
12. Another one that failed to chart in UK and US, so I’m not surprised you don’t know. The ladies in question wanted to see a robin fly .
14. Surprisingly, not a hit in UK or US for this male duo (who were not in love when they still were in a foursome). They sing about a small part of home of God and the saints.
16. Three Australian (but British born) brothers with a 1972 song that stalled at #34 in US. It didn’t chart in UK. According to the song, they’re not dead.
17. Famous duet that’s been covered by many. Tina Turner & Rod Stewart come to mind, but this is the original version.
19. A rather obscure song from 1968 by a duo, best known for the songs that they wrote for The Monkees.
20. American ‘crooner’, who can’t take his eyes off you. This song is from a famous 1972 movie starring Al Pacino and Marlon Brando.
23. It would surprise me if any of you actually knew this song. It’s one of those songs that we (i.e. the Dutch) seem to have a liking for.
The song dates form 1985 and (nearly) shares its title with a 1991 Salt-n-Pepa hit. The singer’s only other claim to fame was titled You Can Do It (1979).
25. Another artist that rose to fame on Woodstock. The song (about Rita Coolidge) peaked at #10 in UK and #69 in US.
27. This 1992 song hit #11 in UK and #28 in US. The band appear to be asleep, while behind the wheel.
30. This singer had another hit with “Criticize” in the same year (1987), and yes: Alex IS his name.
33. A UK #8 hit for a band best known for Wild Thing.
35. Wow, this really is a shocker. I thought this one would be gone in no time.
They were Australian, until their breakup in 1968, and they lived in their own little bubble.
36. A 1973 song that did poorly in US but hit #8 in UK. The song title appears to be inspired by a famous line from a 1972 mob movie (see also #20).
37. The original version of a song covered by Undercover in 1992. The singer also wrote a song that was later used as the theme song to a popular sitcom
(starring Bea Arthur and Estelle Getty a.o.)
38. I have this song on instant replay. It might relight my fire.
41. Norwegian trio with a melodic and haunting song that peaked at #5 in UK, but failed to chart in US. There’s no end to the lengths they’ll go.
42. By far the best known British band from the 1970’s and 1980’s. Lead singer died of aids. This song peaked at #14 in UK and #42 in US.
43. Yes, it’s Jona Lewie.
47. Not a very well known song, I’m afraid. The singer died in 1980 and wondered how one can hang on to a dream.
This tune, however, dates from 1970 and stalled at #50 in US.
48. The sole international claim to fame by a Canadian singer, who seems to be commuting in US.
49. This 1984 big band hit was produced by August Darnell, and features the Big Apple.
54. A 1992 hit for a singer who rose to fame with a cover of a Prince song. This song is about the consequences of good fortune.
55. When I say War, you say But the singer had other hits, like this one. He’s still a long way from home, though not nearly as far as the Pretenders were.
56. Not a hit in UK or US for this UK born singer who lives in US. He wonders if she’s really going out with the other guy.Joe Jackson]
This song is NOT about fake females.
57. The singer is known to spread Controversy, but has managed to score a long string of hits nonetheless. This one dates from 1988.
59. A song about a blackout. It failed to make a dent in US charts (only reaching #104), and did nothing in UK.
The artists had other hits, most noticeably Disco Inferno.

I'll guess from the clue for #14. It has to be one of the ex 10cc duo's. I'll go with ...

Godley & Creme - Little Piece of Heaven

#16 is The Bee Gees (someone else will have to guess the song though  :-\\)

#56 Real Men

12 - Silver Convention

38 - Dan Hartman.  I know it isn't 'I Can Dream About You', so given the clues and using process of elimination, a guess would be 'We Are the Young', a song I don't know that well

#56 - It's Different for Girls?

#49 - Kid Creole and the Coconuts?

#55 - Edwin Starr?  If so, a guess would be H.A.P.P.Y. Radio

It's no surprise I missed that Patsy Gallant one.  I am not as lyrically familiar with it as I should be, and I even have it on a CANCON 70's CD I listen to at work.

I'll guess from the clue for #14. It has to be one of the ex 10cc duo's. I'll go with ...

Godley & Creme - Little Piece of Heaven

#16 is The Bee Gees (someone else will have to guess the song though  :-\\)

#56 Real Men

All correct, Peter! :) Song title for #16 is only one word. ;)

12 - Silver Convention

38 - Dan Hartman.  I know it isn't 'I Can Dream About You', so given the clues and using process of elimination, a guess would be 'We Are the Young', a song I don't know that well

That would be a yes.

#56 - It's Different for Girls?

Peter just came up with the right answer.

#49 - Kid Creole and the Coconuts?

Good guess, but no. :(

#55 - Edwin Starr?  If so, a guess would be H.A.P.P.Y. Radio

Edwin Starr is correct, but the song title isn't. It's a distance.

Well, you can't know 'em all.

Going by the clue; gibbo already gave the band, but the only song I think will fit.

#16...Alive?

I've given you one day extra to reply, but it seems you're all out of answers... so here:

08. I fear this song wasn’t released as a single in UK or US. It also dates from 1991.The band are on the dole. No wonder they’re crying.
Tears From My Eyes - UB 40

12. Another one that failed to chart in UK and US, so I’m not surprised you don’t know. The ladies in question wanted to see a robin fly.
Always Another Girl - Silver Convention

19. A rather obscure song from 1968 by a duo, best known for the songs that they wrote for The Monkees.
Alice Long (You're Still My Favourite Girlfriend) - Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart

Let's Talk (About Sex) - Al Hudson & One Way

27. This 1992 song hit #11 in UK and #28 in US. The band appear to be asleep, while behind the wheel.
          Drive - R.E.M.

47. Not a very well known song, I’m afraid. The singer died in 1980 and wondered how one can hang on to a dream.
This tune, however, dates from 1970 and stalled at #50 in US.
Simple Song Of Freedom - Tim Hardin

49. This 1984 big band hit was produced by August Darnell, and features the Big Apple.
A Night In New York - Elbow Bones & The Racketeers

54. A 1992 hit for a singer who rose to fame with a cover of a Prince song. This song is about the consequences of good fortune.
Success Has Made A Failure Of Our Home - Sinéad O'Connor

55. When I say War, you say ... But the singer had other hits, like this one. He’s still a long way from home, though not nearly as far as the Pretenders were.
          25 Miles - Edwin Starr

57. The singer is known to spread Controversy, but has managed to score a long string of hits nonetheless. This one dates from 1988.
          Glam Slam - Prince

The most of these were rather challenging for me, which is why I couldn't figure out a good number of them. As for the 'given' answers...

I did know one of those songs, but just not all the words to it.
