Subject: London Calling...done!

Written By: Paul on 09/05/10 at 1:04 pm

Well, whod've thunk it? Me doing an audio quiz!  :D

Greetings, people...what follows is a mash-up of 36 'fairly' well-known tunes of yesterday, all of which follow a common theme...

The theme being they were all originally released in Britain on the legendary London record label.

Back in the day, the small US independent labels had no British outlet for their releases until Decca/London stepped in and obtained the licences and consequently, as rock and roll started to bite, the label ended up releasing some terrific stuff, a small fraction of which can be heard within the next eight minutes...

All you have to do is tell me what they are! Have fun! Limit of 5 to start off with...

(Don't be put off by the fact that some of these songs are 50+ years old...they should be pretty well-known enough!)

(And don't be put off by my crummy graphics...I lack imagination!)

I know a whole bunch of 'em! Let me pick five of the unanswered ones I figured out:

#10 = "Great Balls Of Fire" by Jerry Lee Lewis.
#12 = "Witch Doctor" by David Saville and the Chipmunks.
#21 = "Mack The Knife" by Bobby Darin.
#25 = "Shop Around" by The Miracles.
#28 = "Locomotion" by Little Eva.

You have got me thinking there!

That's what I like to hear, Mr. Philip!

Of course, no mistaking Little Richard at #3., but not the song I'm after...everything else correct, though!

Top marks for naming Tab Hunter...most people think this is Pat Boone - understandable, as both were pretty boys back in the day...

Difference being Pat could actually sing!

I know a whole bunch of 'em! Let me pick five of the unanswered ones I figured out:

And let me credit you with five correct answers, Jeff...

(Actually, #12. is just David Seville on his own - The Chipmunks came a little later...)

'Shop Around' while being the first big Motown hit in America, bombed completely in Britain, making this issue worth a small fortune!

Awesome quiz!  Love to hear this music again!

Thank you muchly, Patty...it certainly is top-drawer stuff!

You're a little off with the artist for #11. - it's certainly an instrumental group, but not the Ventures (who were more guitar driven)...other than that, top marks all round!  :)

I think I've got a half an answer left because I missed the artist on my first try at this quiz...so...

20. Ray Charles

Hiya Paul! Great quiz you got here. :)

Not an awful lot for me left to answer, but after giving it a good listen...

#22. Because They're Young - Duane Eddy
#32. I'm guessing the artist must be Walker Brothers. Can't think of anyone else.

Good grief! You lot have been busy!  :D

karen - good stuff! All correct apart from the artist for #18. (Mr. Eddy is in here somewhere though!)

Great quiz...though sadly, I'm rather late to arrive!  :-BTW, #15 sounds so familiar!  I know I have it in my CD collection, but I just can't place it!

Danoota will tell you what it is!  ;)

Jason...all correct with yours!

I can do most, because I remember when they came out  :)

And what a soundtrack you had to your youth, Danoota! Just pipped by karen to #16.

I 'cheated' a bit with #2. as this was never actually released as a single in Britain at the time (probably as it was too 'wild' for us!)
It did however appear on an 'extended play' record a couple of years later...but I couldn't leave it out, as it's such a fine record!

Right with the other half of #20., Patty...

And here's a change! Henk replying to one of my quizzes for once!  :D

Well done on picking out Duane Eddy (I said he was here somewhere!) as I didn't think anyone would get that!

Good (but incorrect) guess on the artist for #32. - they ARE fictional 'brothers' and they made mean and moody records, but they're not called Walker...

Came in really late here...yikes.
#1 sounds like Earth Angel.  The Penguins is the artist?
I have dial-up connection, so it takes about 45 minutes for your 8 minutes to play...Here I go.

Gonna guess #32 is Righteous Brothers.
Guess #27 is Bobby Vee.
Haven't heart those 2 yet, dialup is up to song #7 now  :D

1. Earth Angel - The Penquins

I cheated on the singers.  I have to admit, though I remember Earth Angel I have know idea about the Penguins

It's been used in the past as a tune by a radio station I used to listen to, but as it goes with instrumentals... you tend to forget the title. A good thing I used it in one of my own quizzes! :D

Gonna guess #32 is Righteous Brothers.

That's what I meant to say... ::)

Another guess for #18. I think the artist should be Eddie Cochran (instead of Duane Eddy).

Real sorry about the issues with your connection, Frank...I just assumed everyone was on broadband these days!  :-
1. Earth Angel - The Penquins

I shouldn't think anyone knows about The Penguins, as they were an archetypal one-hit wonder (with this!)

Sadly, Frank beat you to it, Danoota...but well remembered!

For reasons unknown, London thought that this genuine slice of doo-wop would sell in Britain...it didn't! Consequently, if you were lucky to find a copy today, it'd happily sell for upwards of £3,000!  :o

Gonna guess #32 is Righteous Brothers.
Guess #27 is Bobby Vee.

Well guessed, Frank!

Another guess for #18. I think the artist should be Eddie Cochran (instead of Duane Eddy).

Probably what got karen confused in the first place...right again!

There you go...and that concludes things!

Not bad, considering I thought that most people would be scratching their heads with a lot of these!

Thanks for playing and listening all!  :)

Great quiz..no need to change for me. If I had the $, I'd get high speed, but can afford the $3 a month dila-up much better right now.
