Subject: ABCs on 45 - An Audio Quiz (GAME OVER)
Written By: whistledog on 07/06/09 at 6:54 pm
I finally did another music quiz :D
45 songs, 15 each in 3 categories:
1-15 is A: American artists with hits of the 80s
16-30 is B: Songs in the British Top 40 during the 80s
31-45 is C: Canadian artists with hits that made it outside of Canada
NOTE: In the actual quiz, songs 40-45 all say Clip 40. I'm too lazy to fix that (takes alot of work), so when answering make sure you provide the correct song number LOL
THE LIMIT IS GONE

Wow... These are harder than they appear. Some sound (vaguely) familiar, but I can't place them right now.
It's a good thing I gave you karma beforehand. ;D
I did recognize these three:

Hi Jason - thanks for posting another excellent quiz :).
As a Brit who's over 40, I have to go with songs 16 - 30. I did try the Canadian section but only recognised two artists with songs I'm not familiar with!
#17 John Wayne is Big Leggy - Hayzee Fantasee
#18 Mirror Mirror - Dollar
#24 Cath - The Bluebells
#17 was the song that originally brought me onto this forum all those years ago. I was searching for the lyrics which, when you hear what they're all about, are quite shocking!

Indeed about #17. The Duke himself (had he still been alive) would not've approved LOL It's an odd song, but very catchy!

7. Moonlighting Theme - Al Jarreau
10. That Ain't Love - REO Speedwagon
13. The One You Love - Glenn Frey
These are all correct! I'm always surprised when people know of #10. When it comes to REO Speedwagon, that one often seems to be left out of the mix. Still one of my faves, an absolutely beautiful song!

Did you also know that Wonder Dog was Simon Cowell? Whenever Simon tells someone their music is horrible, he should stop and gaze into his own past :D It's actually not a bad song, but it's not the best either lol
The song itself was created by a German guy called Harry Thumann, but it was Simon himself doing TV appearances in the doggy suit (well, I suppose you gotta start somewhere in this business!)
It's reported he sometimes succumbs to 'dark moods and miserable thoughts'...well, wouldn't you in a costume like that? :D

Both of these are correct. Gordon's version topped at #24 in the US, while Byron's version soared to #4. The odd part is that both versions were bigger in the US than Canada, where Gordon just scraped the Top 40, and Byron fell just outside the Top 40
Tex Ritter also did a reading of it, which became a very minor hit in America, but unlike the two predecessors, Tex's version did not qualify for Canadian Content

(That, and because I am anxious to start work on my next audio quiz)
06 | Surprised no one knows the title of this one. From 1986, it was a Top 40 hit in both the US and UK.
09 | A 1980 US Top 40 hit, the biggest for this Cleveland based band.
16 | The tragic Billy MacKenzie. To me, this was still his best
20 | A 1989 hit. Not a good song for Marie Antoinette
22 | A 1984 hit by a former lead singer of a short-lived early 80s pop group with a name only a barber would love. Reached #25 in the UK.
31 | The title and artist are named after the principal instrument in the song. It reached US #57 in 1973
32 | The middle of a work week. This was a US Top 40 hit in 1973
35 | Is this one Canadian? What do you think? It was a Top 20 hit in the Netherlands in 2008 and also reached #47 in the UK this year.
39 | This one reached #14 in the UK just this year. One half of the artist sometimes wears a giant red rat like custome when he performs
40 | This one reached #32 in Australia in 1979 and was a one hit wonder there. It also reached US #56 that same year.
41 | This one reached US #48 and UK #46, both in 1979. The artist has an italian name
43 | This one entered the US chart in 1979 and peaked at US #48 in 1980. The follow up to 'Music Box Dancer'. Want to pick some pickled peppers?
44 | The final US hit for this "foghorn' band. One Fine morning when I wake up, I see this song at #53 in the US chart in 1973

It is Wednesday yes. I am unsure if Wednesday (later known as Wenzday) were known outside of North America. Despite a small handful of hits in Canada, 'Last Kiss' was their sole US Top 40. Their only other stateside hit was a cover of 'Teen Angel' which reached US #79 in 1974

LOL I just rechecked my facts, and it turns out that 'Head On' by the Jesus and Mary Chain only made #57 in the UK.
I wonder why I thought it was in the UK Top 40? I know .. because it appears on the UK 2xLP Compilation (I have the Double Cassette version) called 'Monster Hits' that came out in late 1989

Don't know where you got your information, but that song only made #5 in bubbling under section of Dutch Top 40. So clearly not a Top 20 hit.

Hmm. The Dutch Top 40 isn't the only Dutch chart, so it might've been one of the other charts they were talking about. But that is hard to check.

It could have been a misprint, but when I saw it at #17, I knew it had to have been a Top 40 hit somewhere. A dance song that catchy should've taken Europe by storm
