Subject: Z is for...Zugabe (Part 2: Fictitious Forty Mk III) [DONE - Paul Strikes Again!]

Written By: Henk on 03/09/09 at 4:18 pm

http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/2/17/785141/FictitiousFortyLogo2.jpg

As promised...here's some more Encores! This time it's letter F revisited.
In theory, the songs in this quiz could've made exactly one Top 40, because
song #01 in this quiz peaked at #40 in Dutch Top 40, song #02 peaked at #39 and so on.

Limit = OFF

As always: no cheating, please. Have fun!
:)

Hints!

02. Jazzy band, lead by trumpeter William Chiaiese. The entire band was killed in an airplane crash in 1974. This song got to #24 in US.

03. You know the band, even though she's not there. Do I have to repeat myself? Apparently so... ::)

10. A song about a medical condition some of us suffer from. It only made #44 in US.

11. This song about no specific feathered animal only just made Top 40 in UK.

23. With a song that made #14 in US, the band is a true OHW. They also recorded "The Train", "Chance Of Lovin' You" and "My Baby Loves Lovin'"
(and it's not the White Plains).

28. An artist that made the country charts dozens of times - but not with this song, oddly enough. His best known songs are (I guess) "Santa Looked a Lot Like Daddy",
"I've Got a Tiger By The Tail" and "Christmas Shopping". This song is about our national capitol.

31. His first names are John Collins, but he goes by his last name. I don't think this song (about the ambitions of a legendary platinum blonde) charted in UK or US.
In fact, I don't think he's had any hits anywhere (apart from this one)!

32. This band is really REALLY well known. I'm surprised nobody picked up their good vibrations (yet). The song, that hit #33 in UK and #61 in US,
      features some specific feathered friends.

34. Willie Nelson teaming up with an artist that's already in this quiz (well, his band is - see #3). The song, that did nothing in UK or US,
is about how everybody moved south of the border.

35. I'm sure Jason will get this one, so I'm not giving any clues.
:P

#8 is bugging us both as well.  Dai reckons it's another Fleetwood Mac track.
#37 Bob Marley

I know you weren't begging.

Aw heck... the singer was born in Detroit (from a British mother and a Yugoslavian father), but moved to England (Hull) when she was 13 years old. First and last name of her stage name start with the same letter. I think people consider her a OHW (though not with this song).

Aw poop.  :(

Dai reckons wrong. :( All I'm willing to tell you is that the artist is a male singer.

#37 Bob Marley

That's incorrect, although relatively close... ::)

Then #18 is the The Boy in the Bubble - always got those two mixed up because they came out around the same time  ::)

#15. As Philip & karen have noted, it sounds remarkably like 'Love Is A Many Splendored Thing' (someone could have sued!), but it's 'Behind A Painted Smile' - Isley Brothers

#16. 'Tunnel Of Love' - Fun Boy Three

Modified to guess at #17. I know the song is 'I Go To Pieces', the only version I know is by Peter & Gordon...
(Unless this is Peter & Gordon sounding somewhat different!)

You're right about the song, but it isn't Peter & Gordon. This particular version is rather obscure, I'm afraid - it only got to #66 in US and didn't make Top 40 in UK. I'm looking for a trio, one of the members is a Grammy and Dove Award winning singer/songwriter, now CEO of World Digital Media Group.

Okay, count this as a minor 'cheat' if you will, but I thumbed through the well-used US chart book sitting on my shelf...

Cotton, Lloyd & Christian as the artists?

...which was a new one on me, but it's quite a nice version, so I'll have to see if I can 'find' myself a copy!  :D

That's (partly) correct (it's actually "Romance" from the Gadfly Suite  :P), so I'll give you some credit for that.
It's not the answer I'm looking for, though. :-\\

The music (though not this specific rendition) was used as the theme music for a 1983 (UK) tv series starring Sam Neill, and as such made both UK and Dutch Top 40.

#23 Baby I Need Your Lovin' ?

No. :(

Again, no. :(

I'll give you half a point for the title (though in this case, it's simply called "The Coffee Song"). :)
I think you might know the artist as well - they had a hit with "Sunshine Day".

I've had no time to work on the clues. Maybe tomorrow...

"Sunshine Day" was Osibisa, you know I did think this one sounded like Osibisa, honest I did!

I'll take your word for it, Graham.

Hey Henk, the songs were familiar but the clues really helped, I think.  :-\\

#3...Say It Again....Santana?

#10....Allergies?

Let's see what I can clear up with a little assistance from the clues and the aforementioned book!  ;)

(Deep breath...)

#2. 'Get It On' - Chase (the song that caused the T.Rex song of the same name to be retitled 'Bang A Gong' in the US!)
#11. Title 'Bird Song'
#23. 'My Pledge Of Love' - Joe Jeffrey Group
#28. 'Amsterdam' - Buck Owens
#31. 'Norma Jean Wants To Be A Movie Star' - Cunningham
#32. Title 'Bluebirds Over The Mountain'
#34. Title 'Gone To Mexico' with Santana (again!)

...and if you're convinced Jason knows #35., then he's welcome to it!

Some dam' obscure ones there, Henk! But a marvellous quiz all the same!  :)

#35 doesn't ring any bells, but it's quite catchy.  It sounds a bit like Nick Kamen, but I could be wrong :-\\

Listening to Behind a Painted Smile by the Isley Brothers on Capital Gold right now, I recognised that intro from this quiz.

I hate to disappoint you, but...no. :( See below.

#32 The Beach Boys

Ah yes, that's right. :)

These two are correct, Kevin. :)

I'm impressed...really! Especially #31...You didn't have a lot to go on (really obscure artist!). I honestly don't know why it did so well in our charts. :-\\

You're a bit off on the title for #34 (it should be "They All Went To Mexico"), but I'll give it to you anyway. :)

No, you're not wrong: it IS Nick Kamen. :)

Hmmm...I thought I remembered you being a big fan of this song. :-\\ Not an international hit, btw.

That song got to #5 in our charts - but it's not the one I'm looking for.

This is going to be one of those complete obscure ones again. ;)

I only know 'Each Time You Break My Heart' and 'Loving You is Sweeter Than Ever'.  I know he had others, but I keep on forgetting to give them a listen.  Given the fact you said it wasn't an international hit, then a guess would be 'I Promised Myself'?

You guessed correctly, Jason! :)

And with that, this quiz is DONE.  :D

Here are the songs you've been struggling with most:

Get It On - Chase

Say It Again - Santana

Bird Song - Lene Lovich

My Pledge Of Love - Joe Jeffrey Group

Amsterdam - Buck Owens

Norma Jean Wants To Be A Movie Star - Cunningham

Bluebirds Over The Mountain - Beach Boys

They All Went To Mexico - Willie Nelson & Carlos Santana

I Promised Myself - Nick Kamen

I recognised the Bird Song when I watched the Youtube vid.  It has a distinctive 'bird call' part to it.
