Subject: Z is for...Zugabe! [Remaining Answers Revealed]

Written By: Henk on 02/06/09 at 2:56 pm

http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/2/17/785141/ZisforZugabeLogo.jpg

And now we've finally come to the letter Z. Z stands for Zugabe Tsoe:gah:buh].
That's German, 'cause there's not many words in English starting with Z.
But what does it mean...? Oh, you're smart, you'll figure it out. ;)

Limit = OFF to start with.
Bonus Points if you can name the original artists for songs in section C.

Now off you go... ::)

I totally forgot it was a cover song, which is strange since it appeared on "Labour of Love II", their 2nd all covers album.  I actually don't know who originally sang it, but I anxiously await the answer 8)

Oh and I assume you realized I made a typo on Aztec Camera ;)

was UB40s version of Groovin' popular in NL?  I know it was a minor chart single in the US and it finally made it's first ever compilation appearance on UB40's 2008 'Greatest Hits' album

Not including mini-compilation releases prior to 1984, 'Greatest Hits' marked their 4th best of album, which to me seemed pointless as they should have just done a 'Greatest Hits - Volume III' to include all their hits after 1995 (Which was when 'Greatest Hits - Volume II' was released).  Oh well, being the UB40 fan that I am, I must own all their CDs, no matter how pointless they may be lol

Since all the other D songs contain Day in the title perhaps #68 is by somebody Day.  The only singer I know is Darren Day

UB 40 had a total of 32 Top 40 hits, including 19 Top 10 hits. Of those 19, five went all the way to #1.
Groovin' only got to #18, so not really a big hit for the boys, but still it was more popular than the original version (that did absolutely nothing over here).

'Tis indeed the Sisters of Mercy. Song title includes the (result of the) chemical process that erodes metals. Most commonly, it's referred to as rust.

As for D66...it was a UK #14 and US #40 hit for the group in 1980 - but then they had a change of heart... ;)

Close enough. :) It's actually This Corrosion. Sadly not a Top 40 hit in UK or US.

I hate to disappoint you once again, Karen...but it's not Doris Day. :( I'm looking for a male singer, who shares his first name with one of the long time (UK) members of this board. Not around as much as he used to be, but still well respected and much loved.

Well thanks for the clue Henk....

D66 is Lover's Holiday by Change.

I used to love Change back in the day - wasn't Luther Vandross part of this group?

I must have had a sort of split personality in the late 70s and early 80s. I was a big fan of The Clash and Talking Heads, also heavy rock bands like AC/DC, Motorhead and Rush, yet I still loved the music of groups like Change, Chic and Earth, Wind and Fire. Thinking back, it explains why I used to get in arguments with my friends who were exclusively in one camp or the other.

Correct, Graham.  :) And you're right about Luther Vandross as well - he did vocals for Change on various of their 1970s songs.

An impressive score there, Paul... I counted nine correct answers in total, plus two bonus points.  :)

OK, so I uncluded some 1950's songs this time... :P Not entirely fair, because hardly any of us was around back then and you don't get to hear these songs on the radio anymore (let alone tv).

The artist for D67...If I told you the artist in question has a singing daughter by the name of Nikka, would that help you in any way? ::)

As for D59...I admit, the cover version of the song presumably only hit the charts in my country (yes, we're odd like that). It's a Jamaican duo, and one half had an international hit with "Sideshow".
People should really be paying more attention to my previous posts...especially in this thread.

Subject: Re: Z is for...Zugabe! [Remaining Answers Revealed]

Written By: Henk on 02/16/09 at 3:47 pm

I've decided to reveal the remaining answers. It's not very likely anyone will come up with the correct answers (neither spontaneously nor with massive hints).

So here they are:

B45: Like Flames - Berlin

C41: I Don't Want To Go On Without You - Nazareth (original artist: The Drifters)
Yes, quite obscure, that one... Neither version was a hit anywhere. The Moody Blues' cover of the same song got to #33 in UK.

C46: This is the Bob James version. Well, it only got to #88 in US, so I don't blame you...

C49: The original artist are Young Rascals

D43: This Is The Day - The The

D45: Come On Dance, Dance - Saturday Night Band

D52: The song title is May Each Day. Still got to #19 in UK...

D67: The artist is Don Costa.
His daughter Nikka had an international hit at the age of 8(!) with (Out Here) On My Own. The video shows her
        accompanied by her father.

And to solve the final mystery: "Zugabe" is the German word for "Encore". In case you hadn't noticed already, the themes for the questions in this quiz are the same as the ones I used for my alphabet series, letters A to D. (i.e.: A is for...songs or artists starting with letter A; B is for...Bands; C is for...Covers; and D is for...Day).

So Babel Fish knows nothing.  It told me Zugabe meant addition.  I supposed encore sort of is in addition to the main performance but that wasn't my initial interpretation of it.  I kept looking for something clever to do with how you'd numbered them!

It can also mean "addition", "bonus" or even "allowance", as I've noticed. I wasn't fully aware of that.
"Zugabe" (as in "Encore") just seemed the perfect theme for this music quiz.

And now that I've done an encore for letters A to D... maybe there's more to come? ::) Yes, there is. Stay tuned for more encores/Zugaben.

(Let me tell you beforehand though, that I'll be skipping some letters, because there's just no more songs that fit the theme)

I probably should have known that The The track :(
I have their 2 Disc Greatest Hits album, but I haven't really listened to it well enough to recognize the songs at a quick listen
