Subject: The Eighties Top 40 (and Beyond) <Game Over>

Written By: whistledog on 08/24/08 at 1:35 pm

How well do you know Top 40 hits of the 80s?  I present to you 100 Top 40 hits (50 from the UK and 50 from America), plus a bonus section of 20 minor hits (10 from each the US and the UK).  Please enjoy :)

TOTAL LIMIT = 0

UK TOP 40 - 1 point each
UK TOP 100 - 2 points each

US TOP 40 - 1 point each
US TOP 100 - 2 points each

Remember to specify from which section you are answering, otherwise your guess won't count.  Points appear, with the # of songs answered in brackets.  The Limit is for # of songs, not points, so you could get a max of 10 points on 5 songs

ADDED BONUS:  While making this quiz, I made an error.  I thought US TOP 40 song 1 made the Top 40, but it did not, so therefore it only from that section is worth 2 points

#47. 'For America' - Red Box

You get 1 more guess because Top 100 #2 is incorrect I am afraid.  The others are correct which gives you 6 points

Jason - wonderful quiz and some wonderful memories once again, thanks so much for your efforts in producing these quizzes  :).

Some of my favourites here....

UK Top 10
#17 Ghosts - Japan
#19 Duel - Propaganda
#37 Big Apple - Kajagoogoo

UK Top 100
#6 Eighties - Killing Joke
#8 When Love Breaks Down - Prefab Sprout

"Eighties" was a big juke box favourite of mine in the Student Union bar, until it was removed at the request of pretty much everyone else because I played it too often  ::).
The guitar riff was also shamelessly ripped off  by Nirvana about 10 years later on "Come As You Are", although Killing Joke never saw a bean in royalites.

#13 Good Tradition - Tanita Tikaram
#29 Rise - PiL
#36 Feels Like Heaven - Fiction Factory
#40 Boxer Beat - JoBoxers

#11 was my favourite type of quiz question....had me racking my brains for days, trying to recall where I'd heard that "outro" before, then it came to me in a blinding flash of memory.
Thanks for that Jason ;)  8)!

5 for 5 Graham :)
The outro was the grabbing point of that song.  I couldn't resist using it 8)

Hello again...five more from my side of the puddle!

#2. 'Love's Great Adventure' - Ultravox
#8. (The sublimely-awful) 'Twist (Round And Round)' - Chill Fact-orr
#14. (The equally sublimely-awful) 'Burning Bridges (On And Off And On Again)' - Status Quo

I didn't think anyone was going to get #8 as it's very obscure (and extremely hard to find).  Not that bad of a song, but not that great either lol

5 for 5 Paul :)

I would never have known US #40 if I hadn't used it in one of my own quizzes. I can't remember I've ever heard it on the radio over here (probably because it got stuck in our bubbling under section).

Patrick Simmons is a member of the Doobie Brothers, and 'So Wrong' appeared on his 1983 debut album 'Arcade' which I have on cassette tape :D

'We Close Our Eyes' is a very good song.  The animated music video for it was directed by Godley and Creme and was exceptional! :)

Don't Look Down is correct, though the actual title is 'Don't Look Down (The Sequel)'.  It appears on their 1987 album 'Dancing on the Couch'.  The original version simply titled 'Don't Look Down' was a 1985 UK Top 40 hit appears on their self-titled debut album

Technically it is, but in this instance it's part of Wham's 'Club Fantastic Megamix', which was totally disowned by the pair!

Slightly off-topic, Jason...but 'Bourgie Bourgie' does not appear on any of the 'NOW' or 'Hits' collections (probably because it wasn't much of a hit!)

If you mean #57, then yes it is Glenn Shorrock with his only US solo hit :)

As for the other guess, as well as Henk and Paul's guesses, they are incorrect.  I should provide hints

HINTS:

UK #5 | A 1980 hit that reached #20 in the UK.  A few years ago, it was remixed and sampled by a group called The Conways who turned it into a popular club hit all over again

UK #50 | 1984 hit that reached #20 in the UK.  The song title is also the title of a long running US dance show

UK #51 | I'm a little surprised no one has gotten this one.  It has been a long popular club favourite that was written by Malcolm McLaren.  In 1997, it helped give Mariah Carey her 12th #1 hit in America

UK #54 | The follow-up single from this artist who is already somewhere in this quiz.  And as you can tell by this and the song already in this quiz, since he went "on his own", the music style is much different from that of the band he used to front

US #1 | A legendary instrumentalist from Brasil.  This song was the theme to a 1984 event, despite not appearing on it's soundtrack

US #2 | A long forgotten 1980 song by a long forgotten band.  Their only other chart single in America was a minor hit cover of the Walker Brothers' 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore' in 1981

US #7 | Pretty Poison also has a song with this title

US #11 | Does a jet airliner fly like an eagle?  Maybe not, but this 1981 hit is also the title of a 1983 movie and an album by Linda Ronstadt

US #19 | The name of this band is also the name of af ilm award given in Argentina.  This was their only hit

US #30 | US/Canada only hit for Kylie.  Mum's not the word in this case

US #31 | The only US Top 40 hit for this singer.  His last name describes the type of music he became known for writing, singing and producing

US #49 | The follow-up single to their 1981 hit 'Sweetheart'.  Watch out for those one, two punches

US #52 | A German band that many people think sound like Depeche Mode.  This was their first hit and only US charting single.  They are very hard to spot, but if you part the red sea, you still won't be able to see them lol

US #57 | Glenn Shorrock's only charting single in America as a solo artist.  From his 1983 album 'Villain of the Peace'

^ The hint is there.  I labelled it as UK #51 because I am a moron and forgot that it's actually UK #1 in the Top 100 lol

All those answers you gave are correct :)

HINTS:
US #52 | A German band that many people think sound like Depeche Mode.  This was their first hit and only US charting single.  They are very hard to spot, but if you part the red sea, you still won't be able to see them lol

Alphaville?

I only know Big In Japan by them.  :-\\
