Subject: Sounds Like A Melody - The 80s (Volume 1) <Patty is the Winner!>
Written By: whistledog on 06/07/08 at 8:58 pm
What if I asked you to identify a song based on an instrumental portion only. Could you do it? It's the 80s edition of 'Sounds Like A Melody'. In this edition, it's all Saxophones, which I know has been done before, so it should be rather easy LOL
As usual with most of my quizzes, all songs were hits in Canada, as well Tracks 1-35 were also hits in the US and/or UK chart
But wait, what about #36? As a BONUS, #36 is worth 2 points (but only counts as a regular guess within the limit). Why is it worth 2 points? Because you probably won't know it, but here's a little hint: On more than 1 occasion, I have mentioned it somewhere as a song that to me, has the greatest sax solo of all time

This is indeed correct! That was the post I was hoping someone would notice LOL
Diamond in the Rough was a one album wonder from Canada. 'Ain't Good Lovin' only reached #48 in Canada, but it was a popular radio favourite and has what I believe to be the best use of a saxophone in any song ever!
For anyone who is interested, here's what the full song sounds like: http://www.veoh.com/videos/v989758deThRsDP

Down to the wire, my quizzes are quick, so here's some hints to make those answers stick ...
3 | A 1980 song and the first US Top 40 hit for this popular Cleveland native's self-titled group. Despite several further big and small hits in America, this song was their only mainstream hit in Canada
13 | The final US Top 40 hit during this 'Quarter to Three' singer's brief 80s comeback
19 | The final US Top 40 hit of the 80s for this Canadian singer who never became bigger than Bryan Adams like he had hoped. It reached #2 in Canada and US #38
20 | This tasty Canadian group just missed the UK Top 40 in 1984 with this song which also made a minor impact in America. Despite many hits in their homeland, this was their 2nd and final UK hit and their only chart appearance in America
22 | Nirvana had a different song with this title, but for this former J. Geils Band singer, the video had you jumping!
33 | A sad song by a British seaside duo. A Top 20 hit in the UK, US and Canada in 1989. I've used this in several quizzes of the past and no one got it then LOL

20 | Black Stations/White Stations - M+M (Martha + the Muffins)
33 | Cry - Waterfront
Now as I mentioned before, there is a final bonus question that is worth 5 points

WOW! That just gave you 5 points. That is correct! :)
Springsteen cajoled Bonds into making a comeback, thus his comeback albums 'Dedication' (1981) and 'On the Line' (1982) were produced by Springsteen and backed by The E-Street Band. Clarence Clemons is the sax player in the E-Street Band

Well, I would've guesses Clarence Clemons as well - but having no clues on the other songs he appears in, it didn't feel right to me towards others who might know to snatch those two points.
