Subject: V Is For... (Finally! New Audio Quiz! Answers Revealed)

Written By: Henk on 05/31/08 at 8:59 am

I know you've been craving for this... ::) Back on track with the alphabet series.
Couldn't think of a special theme so it's plain and simple:

Either the song or the artist starts with a V.

BTW...considering some of the songs I've picked, I could've gone for Vintage... ;D

Let's set the limit OFF. Good luck!  :)

Hints!

02. O, come on...You don't really need hints for this one, do you ...Jason?
05. Village People performing where movies are made.
09. These guys remind me of Erin's little boy. One of them died in a helicopter crash in 1990. Can you hear the clock..?
11. A guy that likes to shine silently, especially on February 14. Member of the E-Street Band.
25. I'm not surprised you didn't get this one. A rather obscure gospel choir from a specific part of NYC. The song is a triple denial (like a Destiny's Child song).
31. The singer has Spanish eyes.
36. The singer was once part of a duo (with Judy Clay) and later had a band of "hitters" backing him up, but this is one of his solo hits. You don't need to look after him.
37. Another Canadian, with a last name that is also a city in Massachusetts (US) and near Stonehenge, Wiltshire (UK). Song title is also a US State on the East coast.

Those three are spot-on, Janine. :)

Is it a coincidence that they're all three about girls...? ???

And might I say I'm rather surprised you got #3? I didn't think it was that popular in US.

Yes it is Mr. Lonely. :) The song was cleverly reused by Akon for his recent smash hit "Lonely".

I don't think there's anything wrong with liking Bobby Vinton, although maybe this particular song is a bit over the top.
I wondered why Akon's recent smash hit "Lonely" sounded familar.

Three for three, Paul. :)

I believe this was the only UK Top 40 hit for Billy Vaughn (much to my surprise, considering his body of work).
"Morgen" was a very popular tune in its days, and has been covered many a time, but it went rapidly out of style. I, for one, can't remember the last time I heard it. :-\\
And some youngsters may only know "Come On Let's Go" because of the Los Lobos version from 1987. (Hah! Those "youngsters" must be in their late 20's by now!)

Not quite...he managed a slightly bigger hit here with a genteel version of 'The Threepenny Opera' (before Bobby Darin did things to it!)

Of course, we had to have the obligatory 'translation', but amazingly, the original version by Ivo Robic also managed to prise open some wallets here!  :o

I could've used Ivo "Mr. Morgen" Robic's original, but neither the title nor the artist starts with a V. ;) Did you know he died in 2000? Well, I didn't.

We've had no less than 14 different versions of "Morgen" hitting our charts (including Ivo Robic and Dickie Valentine). :o

I had a feeling he wasn't well!

Unless there's any others I don't know about, he was the first Croatian (or Yugoslavian!) to have an international hit!

Pretty popular tune, eh?  ;)

It was only a minor hit here on record, but it did pretty well in sheet music sales!

Another three for three, Paul. :)

I read the William De Vaughn song was mistaken for a Curtis Mayfield record by some, when they first heard it.

Caterina Valente only had the one US Top 10 hit with this record...back in 1955! On this side of the pond she did fare quite better (I'm counting 15 Top 40 hits in The Netherlands)...

13 | Kiss Kiss - Holly Valance
32 | Vertigo - U2

Thems would all be correct, Jason. :) Bill Amesbury only got to #27 in our charts with this song. The more I hear it, the more it surprises me it wasn't a bigger hit.

Looks like it's time to wrap this one up. Here's the three you somehow missed...

11. A guy that likes to shine silently, especially on February 14. Member of the E-Street Band.
          Valentine - Nils Lofgren

25. I'm not surprised you didn't get this one. A rather obscure gospel choir from a specific part of NYC. The song is a triple denial (like a Destiny's Child song).
No No No - The Voices of East Harlem

36. The singer was once part of a duo (with Judy Clay) and later had a band of "hitters" backing him up, but this is one of his solo hits. You don't need to look after him.

I know, but when I win, I don't just wanna win, I wanna blow the competition out of the water ;D :D

Was Nils Lofgren popular in NL?  Here in Canada, Valentine made a small dent in the charts.  His biggest hit here was 'Night Fades Away' which just missed the Top 40 in 1981

"Popular" is probably too big a word - he only had 2 Top 40 hits. "Shine Silently" reached #21 in 1979, and "Valentine" made it to #16 in 1991. Inbetween those two, "Secrets In The Street" got stuck in bubbling under section (1985).
