Subject: U is for...Up and Under [...and Over!]

Written By: Henk on 02/02/08 at 9:45 am

http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/2/17/785141/UpAndUnderNewLogo.jpg

Here we go again!! :D Time to bring out a new quiz in my alphabet series.

Another fairly easy and straightforward one, this is...
All song titles include "up" or "under", as a word or as part of a word.
Most songs were (big) hits in UK, but there may be 3 or 4 obscure ones.

Limit = Off. Have fun!  :)

Hints!

15. A UK #26 hit for this Swedish super group, who are being assaulted.

16. Strictly speaking, this one shouldn't be in this quiz - but since I've seen the title often misspelt...
This US female trio, who already had an affair with doctor love, are now questioning their marital vows. But you know, what God has joined...

29. An obscure songs from a rather obscure band, formed in the Midwest in 1976.
Band name: take the movie that features song #6 and chop off the last 4 letters.
Song title refers to where you'll end up if you've had too much to drink (hint: includes some piece of furniture).

31. Only in UK... ::)...A #12 hit song by Jonathan King, in one of his many guises.

32. Cheers! Now let's head for Sacramento...

33. This song only reached #40 in UK. Apparently, there's a lot going on between the sheets...

38. A UK #28 and a Candanian #11 from 1997. Band's name suggest they've made it big in adult film industry. Song title spells trouble...

46. The vocalists on many of Barry White's recordings, with a song originally performed by Felice Taylor.
The vocalists are best known for their 1972 hit "Walkin' In The Rain With The One I Love".

48. British r&b singer, who formed a band with the Dynamic Sounds (1963-1965) prior to going solo. One of the band's better known songs was titled "Kelly".

50. This Southafrican band, who had a 1978 hit with "Substitute", are being attacked, according to the song title.

You had me stumped there... I had never even heard of Eddie Waring.  So I had to google search to find out what you meant. "It's an up and under" is one of Mr. Waring's catchphrases, I understand?  ???

Rugby is really not a big sport over here - hardly gets any coverage. I'm not particularly fond of it, either, so I don't mind.
Had I known about Mr. Waring, though...I most certainly would have used his catchphrase.

8 | Underneath Your Clothes - Shakira

I'm still hoping FileCabin is gonna come back...Well, it is up and running, but you can't upload music files anymore...Every time I try it it says "section comming soon" *

There was also FileLodge, the one that Bobby used to swear by.  It has also fallen the same way.  FileDen is our last hope, and I hope it don't fall the same way.  Once you make an audio quiz, going back to making a lyrics quiz just isn't the same

That's okay Henk. I've only just given my name recently. It's Peter by the way.  I only discovered this quiz yesterday and there's not much left to get! I recognized Smokies sound and then saw Philip's response (confirming my own thought). I then checked all Smokie's songs and there were only two with the word 'up' in them. I guessed the right one. Never heard it in Australia (and I was a Smokie fan). Cheers

Three for three, Paul. :)

I was looking for Freddie & the Dreamers for #45, and I must say that I had my doubts about this version being their rendition. Nevertheless, it was labelled as such... :-\\ Same thing that happened to me a while ago, with "I Like To Teach The World To Sing", if I'm not mistaken. Some groups (especially 60s groups) have a habit of re-recording their earlier works, so it may have been a 'kosher' label, even if the performance wasn't!

I really should stop using songs that I'm not familiar with.

Close enough...it's "Underneath The Blanket Go" but you get half the point anyway. :)

You guessed right, Karen! :) Half a point for the title. Can you remember what guise he used for this song? ???

If Karen does not mind, it was St Cecilia.

Sorry, that video is loading incredibly slow... I'll give it a try later.

"Under The Table" isn't a bad song either. I'm suprised the band didn't make it bigger.

Last knockings...and from the clues I'll guess at...

#32. Artist is Middle Of The Road (No idea of the song, if it ain't 'Chirpy', I don't wanna know!)

#46. Artist is Love Unlimited, I'll guess at 'Under The Influence Of Love' as the title (as I know they had an album out by that name)

#48. Artist is Wayne Gibson (I actually did know this!) which charted in Britain a good ten years after its original release...

#50. Artist is Clout (see #32., but replace 'Chirpy' with 'Substitute'!)

All answers are correct, Paul. :)

I figured you'd know Wayne Gibson (even without the clues)... If I'm not mistaken, though, he originally recorded the song in 1966 but it didn't chart until 1974.

Both Middle Of The Road and Clout were surprisingly popular over here..
MOTR were the first group since the Beatles to score three consecutive #1 hits over here. :o They had 8 Top 40 hits in total, 7 of which made Top 10...and yes, this was one of those 7.
Clout had 4 Top 40 hits (including this song). Apart from the #2 hit "Substitute" they also hit Top 10 with "Save Me" in 1979.

Ouch! I'm glad one of us is showing a better understanding of math!  :-Both Middle Of The Road and Clout were surprisingly popular over here..

Yes, I knew they had a following of sorts in most of Europe...it was their original stomping ground!

Only five hits here (three of which were probably your #1s)...after that, I'm having trouble!  :-Clout had 4 Top 40 hits (including this song). Apart from the #2 hit "Substitute" they also hit Top 10 with "Save Me" in 1979.

Just 'Substitute' here (which was originally recorded by the Righteous Brothers of all people, but I'm sure that's not gonna get me extra points!  ;))

You don't get points, but I must admit that I wasn't aware it was a cover version. :-[

Shocking: according to this website, it wasn't even Clout playing the instruments on the song... :o (see last paragraph)

It's been my pleasure, Philip. :) I might need some time to come up with a good idea for letter V, though... I'll think of something. ;)
