Subject: Super Seventies - Volume 1 <GAME OVER>
Written By: whistledog on 01/09/08 at 1:38 am
Long ago, I promised a 70s quiz, so here is Volume 1. As usual, all songs are based on Canadian charts. You may answer any song from either section as long as you don't exceed the total limit. As with previous quizzes I've done, Firefox may not be compatible, so IE is best reccomended. Provide the name of the sections with which you are answering. So without further adieu, take your pick :)
Top 40 hits (1 point per song)
Minor Hits (1 point per song)
Canadian Versions (You know these songs, but you may not know these versions, so all you need to do is provide the song title. 1 point per song.)
THE LIMIT = 6
Bf-fan = 4 | CF = 4 | Gaylon = 2 | gemini = ½ | Henk = 2½ | jaytee = 4½ | karen = 4½ | ninny = 4½ | maddog = 4 | ninny = 1 | Paul = 6 | Philip Eno = 4½
TOP 40 - HINTS
17 | Canadian singer (by Citizenship) with a song about a place where he once lived in Australia. Reached US #113 in 1973 and was also a hit in Australia. The singer is now a filmmaker
30 | One hit wonder by a trio of studio musicians. Vocals by a singer named Denise Montana. Reached US #82 in 1978
CANADIAN VERSIONS - HINTS
Remember: You don't need to know the artist, just the song
01 | Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and was originally, in 1964, the second US Top 40 hit for The Rolling Stones
04 | The song in the clip is the original. A cover version by England Dan and John Ford Coley reached US #49 in 1978
07 | Originally a US #6 hit for The Intruders in 1968
08 | Surprised no one's gotten this one. Original version was a US #1 hit by Rhythm Heritage and served as the opening for a short-lived Robert Urich TV series

I'll (hopefully) clear up a few...
Top 40 Hits
#3. Artist is Atlanta Rhythm Section (a couple of the members used to be in Classics IV who did the original)
Minor Hits
#1. 'Life In Tokyo' (which was also a minor hit in Britain, though not until 1982!)
#3. 'Lamplight' - David Essex
#4. Artist is Randy Edelman
#7. Artist is The Strawbs
#8. 'Now That We've Found Love' - Third World

Just noticed graham's answer to this...
#7 Part of the Union - Hudson Ford
I'd be tempted to say give him partial credit, as Richard Hudson & John Ford were the prime movers behind this song...this was so far removed from The Strawbs' usual 'folk' sound as you could get (and it upset their 'older' fans terribly!)

All correct Paul :)
I was surprised 'Life in Tokyo' even charted in Canada. I'd always known Japan to be not successful in North America, then I see that in the chart. It was their onlt hit single here, though they did have a few hit albums, most notably 'Gentlemen Take Polaroids' which just scraped the Canadian Top 40 :o

I was tempted to give him half a point but I thought it might be unfair as Hudson and Ford recorded it with the Strawbs. It's close but no cigar lol

I'd been working on this quiz for many months now. A little bit here and a little bit there. I hadn't used my FileDen account in so long, nor had I made a quiz in so long, I had to start from scratch, and I almost forgot how to make an audio quiz LOL
You got that answer correct! :)

Dang, I always get Hudson Ford and The Strawbs mixed up!
As I have one guess left though, I'll go for #9 in the Canadian Versions which is "Lying In The Arms Of Mary", a hit in the UK for The Sutherland Brothers and Quiver.
I can't remember who had a hit in the US & Canada with the same song although I recall it has been discussed on this forum in the past, with some heated debate about which was the original version!

It is Arms of Mary yes. The Sutherland Brothers and Quiver original never charted in Canada, so Vancouver group Chilliwack took it into the Top 40
#10 Canadain version Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)-Holly Cole?
It's not Holly Cole which is OK because all that was required was the song title. 1 point for you :)
Canadian #2 It Might as well Rain Until September
A correct answer which technically put you over the limit by half a point, but not to worry because my quizzes are quick. The limit has been increased by 2 :)
