Subject: Whistle While You Work [Time for the Final Whistle]

Written By: Henk on 09/02/07 at 3:47 pm

http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/2/17/785141/WhistleLogo.jpg

Here's a new audio quiz for you. :) All song clippings contain whistling or a whistle.
The idea was handed to me by Kevin (loki 13) . He also provided quite a few of the song titles.

Now before I whistle this thing off...Limit = OFF
And some of the clippings are rather...short. ::)

Good luck and enjoy! 8)

Some Helpful Hints...I Hope!
#15: Almost a OHW from Jamaica, real name Anthony Henry. The song hit #22 in UK, but did nothing in US. Singer also teamed up with the Gunners in 1993.

#17: The artist also wrote music for the "I Spy" series, as well as the themes for "Dick Van Dyke Show", "That Girl", "The Mod Squad" and "Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer". Song title's got something to do with herring, trout, salmon and the like.

#25: Agreed, this is not the most popular/memorable tune by a band that starred in their own tv series. The song (about a wide, treeless plain of the arctic region, covered in starchy food from the roots of the cassava plant) hit #34 in US.

#37: Composer of film music with a broad legacy. This theme was originally used for a 1968 movie, but regained popularity when used by Quentin Tarantino in 2003 (in a movie starring Uma Thurman). Composer in question worked with Alfred Hitchcock (on "Vertigo", "Psycho" and "Marnie", to name but a few).

You've nailed those, Jason - although I can't give you full points for #17. I'm looking for the actual title of the tune, and a performer to go with it of course.

Thanks Graham. :) Your four answers are all correct. There's actually a second artist performing on #29, but I'm not sure if he was credited.

In all honesty, I couldn't give you the "unofficial" lyrics to that song - although I vaguely recall something about a failed painter from Germany and his testicles...?  ::)

It's not the artist I was looking for, and I'm not quite sure he/his band actually performed that specific tune either, Philip. I've done a little research but have come up empty so far. :-\\

On the Soundtack to The Bridge on the River Kwai as quoted on imdb:

"Colonel Bogey March"
Music by Kenneth Alford
Whistled by Alec Guinness and British POW's
Accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Malcolm Arnold

I can't possibly reject that answer, can I? ;)

The version I used for this quiz was by the Boston Pops Orchestra, but I think they all sound the same (well, they should, anyway).

Boston Pops Orchestra, that would be the conductor as John Williams, now the film composer.

All are correct, Jason. :) But as I see it, you still have 1.25 left...So if you have an artist for #38... ::)

42. Bungle in the Jungle - Jethro Tull

That's right, Gaylon. I was kinda surprised to see that it made #12 in US.

?15. Don't Worry, Be Happy - Bobby McFerrin?

No, but a good guess though.

30.  Tighten Up - Archie Bell and the Drells

A US #1, and a real giveaway with that....I thought it would've been gone much sooner.

With only a handful left, I might as well remove the limit completely and offer you some hints.

It's extremely hard to believe that Pat Boone is approaching three-quarters of a century age-wise!  :o

He looks better than me at nearly twice my age!

Here ya go! :)

#45: I knew this one was gonna be hard, if not impossible, though the artist isn't completely unknown. He had a US #7 hit ("Vaya Con Dios")  and a US #8 (with "Amukiriki"). This particular song didn't chart anywhere, so I might as well give you the title: "Walking and Whistling Blues".

Well, for the record...

I do remember Tippa Irie as a 'name', but would never have got that song in a million years...

'The Andy Griffith Show' I've never seen!

If it ain't 'Daydream Believer' (or something of that ilk from The Monkees), then I haven't got a chance...

I've never seen 'Kill Bill'...

But there you are! Fantastic quiz nonetheless, Henk!  :)

That's nothing to be ashamed of. Heck, it's probably so much the better! ;D

Well, neither have I. "The Andy Griffith Show Theme" was one of the songs that kept popping up while researching, so that's why I used it. "Twisted Nerve" was/is available as a ringtone over here, so I've seen/heard that one many a-time.

If it ain't 'Daydream Believer' (or something of that ilk from The Monkees), then I haven't got a chance...

"Tapioca Tundra" wasn't one of their biggest hits (not sure, but it might have been their last). Nevertheless...if you have a chance, you should give it a listen. I feel the song is underrated/ignored by general public.

But there you are! Fantastic quiz nonetheless, Henk!  :)

Thanks Paul. :) Be sure to tune in on my next quiz...
