Subject: Around the World 2 (Answers Revealed)
Written By: whistledog on 07/21/07 at 3:51 am
So here is the 2nd volume of my previous 'Around the World' quiz, and as usual, every song was a Top 40 hit in Canada. But this time, I thought I'd give you the scenic route. The previous edition took a very very long time to make, so while I was preparing this sequel, I thought it would be an interesting idea to introduce it bit by bit at a time, rather than make you wait until the whole thing is complete.
With each country I finish, I will add it in the quiz, which means the limit will increase each time, so you can answer some now or save some for later, but be sure not to exceed the limit. Check back often cause more countries (including multiple sections for some same countries) are still to come! Remember to specify each country (and volume where applicable) with your answers :)
Australia | Canada | Denmark | England (Volume 1) | England (Volume 2) | France | Germany | Ireland | Italy | Jamaica
Netherlands | New Zealand | Scotland | Spain | Sweden | United States (Volume 1) | United States (Volume 2)
THE LIMIT = 0
BM4ever = 5½ | CF = 3½ | DoctorFate = 10½ | Fuss = 2 | Henk = 25 | jaytee = 9 | loki = 1 | maddog = 8 | mooster = 9 | Paul = 9 | Philip Eno = 9 | Tam = 9 | WB05 = 17
EASY HINTS
Canada
01 | (UK #31, 1972). French singer from Quebec who had several English language hits, including this one which was his only UK hit
03 | (UK #46 | US #48, 1979). Instrumental disco artist with a vocal classic
10 | (US #32, 2000). Why is this singer filed under Canada when she was born in Belgium? She is an expatriate in Canada. This song fully qualified her for Canadian Content
Denmark
03 | (UK #21, 1995). Whigfield with the second part of the UK Double AA Side of 'Last Christmas'
04 | (UK #33, 1998). Despite their spanish sounding name and song title, they are from Denmark yes
England (Volume 1)
02 | (UK #9, 1998). Footy song featuring the voice talents of Ian McCulloch, Simon Fowler, Tommy Scott and Mel C
07 | (UK #60 | US #70, 1998). You might have no Great Expectations of this group, because they recorded this song in Stereo
England (Volume 2)
06 | Was not a hit in either the US or the UK. This song was released to the General Public as the title song from a film starring Kevin Bacon. It's got a good Beat
Germany
07 | (UK #81 | US #27, 1997). Real McCoy's last ever US/Canada hit
09 | 1996 song that was not a hit in either the US or the UK. You can get here by french kissing, or if you connect a ball with a bat
10 | (UK #44, 1996). This song is somewhat racy and authoratative
Ireland
05 | Also meaning no way. According to the charts, it was not a hit in in either the US or the UK :o
Italy
03 | 1997 song by Alexia that didn't top the chart. It was not a hit in the UK, but I am not sure about the USA
Jamaica
03 | Beatles cover song. It topped the UK chart in 1993
Netherlands
07 | Tiësto with a 2002 song that apparently wasn't a hit in the UK. If only I could remember the name of this song, I'd know where to put it
Scotland
06 | (US #7, 1984). I am shocked this one is still here. It was one of Sheena's most popular songs. It did not chart in the UK
United States (Volume 1)
02 | Brandy was a fine girl sitting on top of America. But eventually she fell and though her creators struggled, they never recovered :( Several years later, the pieces were reconstructed in new form and in 1977 were back in the US chart with this #33 hit that is somewhat of a long forgotten song

So after over a weeks worth of work, all the songs I was going to add to the quiz are now in there. 131 songs in total and an increased limit to 9
So for those of you with answers already, be sure you do not exceed the limit :)
This is now officially the hardest, longest and most challenging quiz I ever made :o

These are all correct! :) I knew you'd get Canada #9 ;)
Y'know, as I was researching songs for this quiz, I noticed some of these weren't Top 40 hits. Luckily Canada uses more than 1 chart to measure hits. I searched through 5 decades of hits over 8 different charts. It took so much work, I don't think there will be an Around the World 3 ;D

That is the original Redbone version. The difference is the remastered sound quality compared to an original Redbone vinyl LP :D

That is the original Redbone version. The difference is the remastered sound quality compared to an original Redbone vinyl LP :D
:)
Well, I've since had another listen. I knew Redbone had done the original. It was later covered by the Chantoozies, who had a hit again with it in Australia in 1987 .... reaching no.4. I found that to be an unnecessary pale imitation remake of the earlier Redbone classic .. and that's the one I was confusing it with. Have to say, on the snippet I heard ... I was convinced it wasn't the original. Remastering makes a big diff.! ;) :)

Okay Jason, I think I'm ready now!
(Fantastic quiz, btw!)
Canada #7. 'Rock And Roll (I Gave You The Best Years Of My Life)' - Terry Jacks
(This song seems to have had a cover version for every territory! Britain & Aus had Kevin Johnson and the States had Mac Davis)
England Volume 2 #2. 'That Was Then But This Is Now' - ABC
(The only song I know that has 'apple crumble' in the lyrics!)
France #4. 'Lambada' - Kaoma
Germany #2. 'Major Tom (Coming Home)' - Peter Schilling
Ireland #7. 'Dreams' - Corrs
#10. 'Missing You' - Chris De Burgh (almost, but not quite as bad as 'Lady In Red', but bad nonetheless! :P)
Netherlands #1. 'Radar Love' - Golden Earring
#5. It's definitely Starsound (or whatever they were called in Canada...I'd recognise that drum machine anywhere!), but this wasn't part of the 'Beatles Medley' which we had as a single...I know it was on the LP (as I've still got it! :D)
#6. 'Hocus Pocus' - Focus (Prog rock and yodelling...what a mix!)

Here's another six:
Australia
#1: Slow - Kylie Minogue
Canada
#10: I'm Alive - Celine Dion (one of her more bearable vocal excercises...)
Jamaica
#1: Iron Lion Zion - Bob Marley & the Wailers
#2: Reggae Night - Jimmy Cliff
#4: Here Comes the Hotstepper - Ini Kamoze
Scotland
#5: Say What You Want - Texas (not the remake version with the Wu Tang Clan, I think)

Unfortunately Phillip beat you to the Lambada :( He must take dance lessons or something :D
and for Netherlands #5, I'll give you the full point value since you said Medley. The title of the song is 'Medley II' by Stars on 45 which was the second part to the first Beatles medley. I believe this is 'Stars on 45 volume 2' by Starsound in the UK

Ropy indeed! :o
I like this video better...
The young boy and girl dancing in the video are called Chico Oliveira and Roberta de Freitas. They were 12 and 10 years old respectively at the time of this video. The young couple turned out to be so popular that they recorded an album together, and released several singles. (One of them, "Frente a Frente", managed to crawl to #37 in Dutch Top 40). Although neither the boy nor the girl was a singer, the album sold over 100,000 copies in France, I believe.
Needless to say both of them have long since merged into the faceless crowd - much like Kaoma, come to think of it.

Not quite...there was a 'Volume 2', but that was a medley of Abba songs...
All very confusing!
Very confusing indeed. Volume 1 must've combined the whole beatles medley ?
For North America, it went like this ...
- The Beatles Medley was split into a 'Medley I' and 'Medley II'. What's more confusing is the official title (as seen in print) of the first Medley was: 'Medley: Intro 'Venus' / Sugar Sugar / No Reply / I'll Be Back / Drive My Car / Do You Want to Know a Secret / We Can Work It Out / I Should Have Known Better / Nowhere Man / You're Going to Lose That Girl / Stars on 45'
- The ABBA Medley was called 'More Stars on 45'
- 'Stars on Stevie' was known here as 'Stars on 45 III (A Tribute to Stevie Wonder)'

Nope, just what you described in 'Medley I', but known simply as 'Stars On 45'...the flip was an anonymous instrumental!
The ABBA Medley was called 'More Stars on 45'
Our 'Volume 2'...
Our 'Volume 3' was a mish-mash of famous 'introductions'...
'Stars on Stevie' was known here as 'Stars on 45 III (A Tribute to Stevie Wonder)'
Known as 'Stars On Stevie' here...
And the last I heard of 'em was in 1983 when they produced a Glenn Miller/Andrews Sisters effort, under the name of the 'Star Sisters'...

And to add to the confusion...
"Stars on Stevie" was actually Volume IV in The Netherlands. :D :o
"Stars on 45" was the Beatles medley. Then came "More Stars", followed by "Stars on 45 Volume III". Don't ask me what songs were in those medleys (not after all these years...). After that, it was "Stars on Stevie", "The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World" (you can guess what that one was all about), "Stars on 45 Proudly Present: The Star Sisters" (a tribute to the Andrews Sisters), "Stars on Frankie" and last (and least) "The Clubhits".
Well, this certainly clarifies things...NOT!
Modified to add:
Did some research...
"More Stars" was the Abba medley, and "Stars on 45 Volume III" was a medley of famous intros.

I'm surprised it only got to that ^. I think it get's a bit 'wooly' when they talk about songs outside the top 40 as 'hits' .... even though technically they may be. Even outside the top 30 is a bit of a disappointment, I'd think. Top 20 .... now you're talking.
That Cockburn song got enough airplay that I'd've thought it had done better. Chart books are not easily available here like they are in the UK though, and I've failed to find an internet source re Aussie top 40 hits from the 60's onwards ... or anything remotely like that.
There was a song called 'Smiling Islands' back in the early 80's. Remember that one? The female voice was Stevie Nicks. The song got a load of airplay ... but I believe it may have been a minor hit too. Don't think it did too much elsewhere.

That 'Smiling Islands' song was by Robbie Patton with uncredited duet vocals by Stevie Nicks. I can tell you it reached #52 in America, and was not a chart hit at all in Canada. Even though she got uncredited vocals, I think it's one of her best songs! :)

Yes, I knew it was Robbie Patton ... but only 'cause a couple of months ago .. when I was transferring some tapes to mp3 ... I found it on one ...and had to research it to satisfy my curiosity. I think on that same tape were some other minor hits ... from that same year ..1983 ... like 'Midnight Blue' ... a minor hit as I later found for 'Louise Tucker'. Then I had a bit of a Jim Capaldi song 'That's love'. A lot of lost classics there in the sense they're rarely played today ...
It's great to no longer be at the mercy of radio stations to hear a song. After you've set up your hard drive/ visualisations too .. 8) 8) 8) you can now pretty much listen to what you want when you want ....
As for that chart site ... I've found that in the past. Too bad it starts at the point where my musical tastes found diminishing returns .. virtually the 90's onwards :(

Well, thanks for your efforts there Henk.... although I'm quite familiar with that book. I saw it at a library I'm a member of in the Reference section some years ago. At $83 or so, it's way out of the price I'd want to pay ... so I settle for consulting the Guinness British Hit Singles book, widely available in the UK, updated annually, and covers from 1952 to the present day .. although my edition stops at 2000 .. but that's no problem since there wouldn't be too much I'd rate since then!

:)
The Guinness British Hit Singles is up dated bi-annually, every two years, in the June of the odd numbered year. The edition I have is 2003 and I have been looking for the 2007 ediition, but is not in WHSmiths.

I don't think the 2007 edition would be out yet, Mr. Philip...the publisher's don't work that fast! ;)
The most recent edition is #19 (published last year with data up to the end of 2005)...it's a huge orange thing masquerading as a phone book! :P
And right near the bottom of page 464 of said book, I find this...
USA Volume 2 #4. 'Brazil' - Ritchie Family

This gives you 9 out of 9 Paul :)
I am surprised that one was still in the quiz. I was starting to think it wasn't as popular as I thought lol Shame it only got to #41 in the UK :(

You want six more, you get six more:
Denmark
#2: Played-a-live (The Bongo Song) - Safri Duo (the Year-end hit of 2001 over here!)
France
#3: Music Sounds Better With You - Stardust
Germany
#8: Stay - Sash feat. LaTrec
Netherlands
#8: Do What's Good For Me - 2 Unlimited
#9: Better Off Alone - DJ Jurgen feat. Alice Deejay
USA (II)
#5: It's Scatman John, but his songs sound sooooo much alike... I'm guessing it's Scatman's World.

All correct. The song isn't Scatman's World, but since Scatman is in the song title, I'll give it to you ;)
Were any of these the surprising ones ?

I've been through them all. Thought I'd know the Gilbert O'Sullivan song ... but it's one of his more obscure ones which I may have on his greatest hits compilation ... but the title? I'll take a wild stab at 'Happiness is me and you' ... with zero confidence ... and that'll be my parting effort.
Once again, well done on this quiz Jason ... and I got a cool song out of it too ..
(Major Tom ... Peter Schilling! 8) ).

Well, I was kinda surprised to hear "Do What's Good For Me" (instead of one of the more obvious 2 Unlimited songs), but there's still at least two left in this quiz that I didn't think made it outside Europe.

We might be needing some hints, Jason...Don't think I have another 7. :-\\
Anyway...
Denmark
#3: sounds like it has to be Ace of Base. Don't know what the song is, though.
Germany
#6: Lemon Tree - Fool's Garden (I'm surprised to see it has made it outside Europe)
Italy
#2: One and One - Robert Miles & Maria Naylor (one of your faves, if I'm not mistaken)
Netherlands
#3: It's Vengaboys, right? ??? And could it be Kiss (When the Sun Don't Shine)...? :-\\
#4: Give it Up - The Goodmen
#10: A Deeper Shade of Soul - Urban Dance Squad
...and that's it.
Canada #2 and #10 have been bugging me, though. I KNOW I know them, just can't think of the title. >:(

United States (Volume 2)

Netherlands:

#2: Jason Whistle dawg?

I'd love for somebody to get Denmark #4. I can remember hearing this song in the days of my youth (mid-to-late 90s, if that helps anyone), but I can't say what it's called or who does it. Must have been fairly popular around here, though.

'Lemon Tree' was indeed a surprise hit for Canada. I am actually still surprised it charted in Canada, as I don't believe it was popular in the States

Canada
02 | (UK #40, 2001). Featuring a funk legend. I am amazed no one knows this one. Better have a few drinks in Los Angeles to jog your memory
I told you I knew this one... ::)
Astounded - Bran Van 3000 with Curtis Mayfield
10 | (US #32, 2000). Why is this singer filed under Canada when she was born in Belgium? She is an expatriate in Canada. This song fully qualified her for Canadian Content
Ummm...Kate Ryan? ???
Denmark
03 | (UK #21, 1995). Paired in the UK with a cover of Wham!'s 'Last Christmas'. Better listen to this one Another Day, perhaps on a Saturday Night
That should make it Whigfield. Unfortunately, I don't think this was a single in The Netherlands (as we also got "Last Christmas").
05 | (UK #36 | US #51, 1998). Pop duo. Their name (in dot form) is also the title of a 70s satire sitcom featuring a butler
Now I know why I kept coming up with Shampoo... ;D
This Is How We Party - S.O.A.P.
England (Volume 1)
07 | (UK #60 | US #70, 1998). You might have no Great Expectations of this group, because they recorded this song in Stereo
For some reason I keep coming up with Hooverphonic. :-\\
England (Volume 2)
08 | (UK #11, 1987 | US #31, 1988) The follow-up to Shattered Dreams
Of course! :-I Don't Want To Be a Hero - Johnny Hates Jazz
Germany
07 | (UK #81 | US #27, 1997). Runaway with these guys but do it Another Night
That's either The Real McCoy or MC Sar & the Real McCoy...and I'm sure I've heard the song before.
Ireland
05 | Also meaning no way. According to the charts, it was not a hit in in either the US or the UK :o
Could it be "I'll Believe It When I See It"..? :-\\
Italy
03 | 1997 song that didn't top the chart. It was not a hit in the UK (unsure about the US). She had bigger success in the UK with the songs 'Uh La La La' and 'Gimme Love'
That must be Alexia. Unfortunately, "Uh La La La" is her only song I know.
Netherlands
07 | Top DJ. He had lots of hits in the UK, but this wasn't one of them. This music is a lethal industry I tell ya. If only I could remember
DJ Tiësto. Must be one of his more recent tunes...can't put a title on this one.
