Subject: Cryptic: Who am I? FINISHED!
Written By: Green Lantern on 06/02/07 at 4:09 am
Can you guess the band/artist I'm thinking of? The amount of words in their/the band's name
is supplied, and a small clue....expect a few bad puns here ... (that 'sound' like the artist).
Well, I reckon you've had long enough, and maybe my logic/clues were too strange. So I've decided to just provide the answers ...
1. Somebody who might've written a bad letter? <- 1st name (or who's been bad, and written the letter)Yet the surname... it sounds like they
might be happy to get their just desserts. Their cat approves too ... 2 words, particularly big in the 80's. Female Cyndy Lauper (Sin D Law-purr) Solved by Green Lantern]
2. Paul Simon neglected to tell us this guy like a good wine. Particularly, from France.
Although a number one hit in Britain, which ties in with 'Southern Comfort' (wine? 'southern
comfort? 'let's get smashed!') has lyrics that gives us the artist's surname. Particularly
big in the 70's, in the UK. 2 words Solved: Henk, Alvin Stardust
3. Their name suggests an aggressive (drastic) way to tackle overweight pop stars.Perhaps they worked
in the same place as Martha & the Muffins?. 70's, 2 words.
Staple Singers (stomach stapling, and 'my job is very boring I'm an office clerk' in 'Echo Beach' ... staples in offices).
Solved by Green Lantern
4.They don't sound too active, or amused either. 70's band, 4 words
The other half of 'somethin stupid' ... might reckon their moniker was pinched. What? You'd like a bit longer? Sounds like their 1st big hit!
Chairman of the board (chair-men of the bored, and Frank Sinatra's nickname): Solved by Green Lantern
5.Perhaps one month they'll ring? (well, sounds like .... and that's the 1st name). The surname suggests the car needs to be inspected to (how could you do that?)
Michael Jackson (MAY-call Jack (car-jack) son (reverse of spring .... off-spring=son) Solved by Green Lantern
check if the 'spring' is off ...(you might have to use 'reverse' logic here). 2 words. Huge. (We're talking mega).
6.Sounds like a Spanish gent. who needs to go on a diet. Maybe the lavatory is a good place
to start? Huge, even after the diet ... 2 words. Solved. 'Elton John' ... Windbreaker05
7.Never mind flogging a horse... this bird sounds like a total waste of time. In fact, it's time is up, in a twisted way, though it doesn't intend to go quietly (or humbly). But finally, where do they live? 2 words, 80s & 90's. (What's missing from the intro? That's part of the sound).
Crowded House (Dead crow ... twisted means reverse ... crow-dead house) Solved by Green Lantern
8.Unlike some of the others here, this lot definitely need to go OFF the diet. Some
correspondence required? Just one will be enough. 2 words, big in the 70's.
Boney M ('skin n bone ... correspondence = letter .. just one ... a letter of the alphabet).
Solved by Green Lantern
9. This girls' guy spends too much time practising a Neil Diamond song, that they live it, (by not being out there DOING it).
Big in the 60's, just snuck into the 70's. 2 words
Herman's Hermits (HER man is 'this girls' guy ... the N.D. song I alluded to was 'Solitary man' ). Solved by Green Lantern
10.May their 'heebee jeebies' / worries etc rest in peace. Certainly that's how they intend to tackle them, and the number involved ...
its' just slightly less than a handful. 3 words,BIG in the 80's , the odd 90's hit too.
Tears for Fears (rest in peace ... abbreviated to 'RIP' ... a synonym of rip is tear .. pronounced differently ... slightly less than a handful 5 digits on a hand becomes 4 (for) .. worries/heebee jeebies = fears)
Solved by Green Lantern
11.Sounds like they sort of managed a medal at Salt Lake City, and that they HAD to win!
(what events were held there a few years back? There's part of the name).
Heyday was the 80's. 2 words
Bronski Beat (Bronze medal 'sort of' means partial word here, at the winter olympics you'll find skiing ... and they were out to win (beat) )
Solved by Green Lantern
12.They sound like they intend to signal their religion in a colorful way.Inspired in a
terrific 'Steely' way ...2 words. 80's & 90's. Solved: 'Deacon Blue' ... Whistledog
13. Sounds like they're trying to recall when the event happened, but have a stutter....
They don't get much bigger. 2 words. Solved by Windbreaker 05: Duran Duran
14.Sounds like they specialise in keeping our 'finny friends' happy. The lead singer sounds
like he's happy in that element too. 2 words, particularly big in the 70s & 80s. (Well, he may not live IN the water, but he finds a means to go across it ...).
Roxy Music (Rock-SEA music ... Bryan FERRY): Solved by Green Lantern
15.Well by now you've been introduced to my jokey way of thinking. It's not all fresh. May I
introduce you to a stale one. Hello, that sounds like the group I have in mind. Part of the
singer's name makes me think of a departed Hollywood actor, (but reversed).Huge (in every
sense, the lead singer...), 70's and beyond .... 2 words.
Meat Loaf (Meet (introduce) loaf (stale?) ... also, his name is Marvin Lee Aday (Lee Marvin): Solved by Green Lantern
Final Scores:
Green Lantern: 11pts (I declare Green Lantern the champeen! :D :D
Windbreaker05: 2pts
Henk: 1pt
Whistledog: 1pt
(Now that's got to be a new twist ... winning your own quiz!)
;D

12 | Deacon Blue (who sadly never broke the charts at all in North America. I have several of their albums and love them!)

Thanks for your comments Windbreaker05, and Whistledog. I'm wondering why it took me so long, given that in hindsight, this seems to be something I'd be good at ... 'cryptic crosswords', or whatever ...
Anyhow, you're both spot on, and the warped thinking was something along the lines...
Spanish ...'El' ...'Ton' = heavy .... the 'John'...
Deacon Blue ...'Deacon' ... sounds like 'Beacon' (signal) .... a 'Deacon' works in churches, ... and of course, Blue .. Also, they got their name from the great .... dare I say, awesome even .. 'Steely Dan' song, 'Deacon Blues'.
So that might help with some of the others too (the 'logic' ..).
Good Luck all. :)

Cool idea for a quiz. :) I likey.
I think #2 must be Alvin Stardust ("You can call me Al" + French word for wine = vin + 1970s...)

Cheers Henk, and well done. Your display of logic ... well worked out. As for the surname, the line 'we are STARDUST, we are golden' appears in the lyrics of the UK #1 'Woodstock' by Matthews Southern Comfort, in the year 1970 (and a great song it is too!).

Hey again!
I think 13 is Duran Duran
I worried about that clue ... perhaps not 'strictly' a stutter, but you got it ... the implied repetition of 'd ..d ..during??' (during-during -> duran duran)...I was thinking I might had to add stuff relating to bees or something (drone drone). Another point to the mighty Windreaker05, the current leader, and the limit is now 4 (probably removed 24hrs from now). :)

Hmmm...sorry we've somewhat let you down on this one. :-were a bit too hard (for me, anyway). :-\\
Well, first times are always the hardest. I hope you're not feeling discouraged.

Well, thanks for your kind words (above) Henk. Guess I do feel a little bit disappointed/discouraged that after initial thumbs -up that people just dropped away from this one. Was hoping for at least a few wild guesses. Anyhow, now that people can see my train of thought, they might feel more encouraged too to have a go if I do another. Next time, I might make it just an 8 question quiz.
Anyhow, you did well, since I'm sure English is not your 1st language, and even for those whose it is ... I guess my line of thought is maybe a bit too idiosyncratic (or some big word like that .... ;) ).
:)

Sorry, haven't been in to check in much. It was a great quiz but I do have trouble with cryptic crosswords. Much fun, though! Looking forward to the follow-up.
