Subject: O is for....One Hit Wonders (in Dutch Top 40) [No More Wonders]

Written By: Henk on 04/16/07 at 2:22 pm

And so...purely by coincidence...both Jason and me did a OHW quiz.

Of course, this one's Dutch, and I don't think there's any doublures (too bad for you! :P)

Some songs in this quiz are easy, and others, well...aren't (LOL!) ;D

You know what to do...so come on, have a go! Unlimited guesses...

Good luck and have fun. :)

PS: I've accidentally put two acts in this quiz that don't belong here, strictly speaking.
One of the two is #23 (Asia). Band member Steve Howe also was
a member of Yes (when they scored a #32 hit with Roundabout)
The other one is #40 (Black Sabbath). Lead singer Ozzy Osbourne scored
two Top 40 hits as a solo artist.

Three bonus points go to Windbreaker05 and karen.
::)

Scores so far:
7.0 + 3.0 Windbreaker05
8.5 Paul
5.5 whistledog
2.03.0 karen
4.0 maddog
3.0 Philip Eno
2.0 Midas
1.0 Gaylon

Hints and stuff!
07. The artist is Peter Brown, but what's the song?
08. Not a lot to go on for this artist/song...It hit #6 in US Club Play Charts. Band name is comprised of a last name and an appendix, very much like Shirley & Co.
13. An obscure UK duo (Simon Fellowes and Simon Gilham) with an unknown song, but I put it in anyway! ;D It peaked at #77 in UK. Their song "Get Out Of London" was featured in the Olsen twins movie "Winning London".
14. The singer (real name: John Colbert) was the lead singer of the Soul Children before starting a solo career.
18. Singer's real name is Eric Goulden. He was born in Newhaven, UK. Other songs that you might know: "Whole Wide World" (covered by quite a few artists), and "Broken Doll" (his biggest chart success, although even that one didn't reach UK Top 40).
21. A song by David Hasselhoff.
24. This song by Climax Blues Band hit #47 in US.
25. Another obscure duo (Murray Monro and John Molloy). Not very productive. They also released a song called "Into Trouble With The Noise Of Art".
30. Nobody recognize this one? It peaked at #41 in US. The singer had already had a hit in 1955 with "Those Lonely Lonely Nights" before changing his style to the more downright dirty. You might know "Superman Hero".
32. German trio, claiming to originate from the former Soviet Union. Both the band name and the song title are clues in that direction.
34. Obscure, I admit...but you never know! It's an American foursome (Auvil Gilchrist, Daniel Terry, Roland Nembhard and Don Howard) with a song about something that we are all in dire need of (not love or money).
35. A OHW in UK, too, peaking over there at #7 in 1993. It's an Italian duo. The song contains a synth riff sample of Simple Minds'  "New Gold Dream".
42. A song by Alex Harvey.
43. A not very famous Irish septet, lead by Leslie Dowdall. Their single "Take My Hand" was co-written by Sinéad O'Connor. Other songs include "All I Wanted" and "Don't Fear Me Now".
45. Singer's real name is Paul Goodchild. He had some minor success in US clubs, with "Come With Me" and "One More Shott".

Great quiz, Henk! Thanks for it.

I don't know very many of these and a few of mine have been taken, but I think I can squeeze out four.

19. Tired of Toein' the Line - Rocky Burnette
27. Tiptoe Thru the Tulips With Me - Tiny Tim
40. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
44. All the Love in the World - Consortium

And I will guess that #23 is one of the ones that isn't actually a one hit wonder.

It's a fun song
I'm pretty much a sucker though for any song that isn't a hit over here, and Street Dance is one of them lol

Hiya, Henk!

Well, I downloaded Windows Media Player and was finally able to play your clips...but man! are they slow!  :o

It would've taken me hours to go through all of them...so after about listening to about 15, this is all I was able to come up with... :-\\

39. sounds like Simple MInds, but I don't know the song...
40. Paranoid (?) - Ozzy Osbourne

Hi again, Henk...

Slim pickings for me this time around, I'm afraid... :-\\

#26. 'Bad Habits' - Jenny Burton (not a huge hit in Britain, but very successful in the clubs...I always tried to 'mix' it with Jocelyn Brown's 'Somebody Else's Guy'...not very well, I might add!)

#33. 'Lady Of The Dawn' - Mike Batt (one of those records which was played a lot here, but disappeared under the chart radar!)

I'm gonna try for the other 'odd one out'...

#31. 'Johnny Reggae' - Piglets

...I'm working on the assumption that Jonathan King has had hits in The Netherlands and although he didn't sing lead on this, the backing vocals are his and it's genuinely 'accepted' as mostly his own work...

Probably wrong, but interesting nonetheless!  :)

Correct!  :)

#33. 'Lady Of The Dawn' - Mike Batt (one of those records which was played a lot here, but disappeared under the chart radar!)

Also correct!  :) Mike Batt...now there's a musical genius. Of course you know he wrote songs like  "Bright Eyes" (Paul Simon), "9 Million Bicycles" (Katie Melua), "I Feel Like Buddy Holly" (Alvin Stardust) and "If The Lights Go Out" (Hollies) ? ???
And he also worked with Andrew Lloyd Webber on the musical "The Phantom Of The Opera" ...?

But I think his most appreciated work is the music to the tv series "The Wombles"! ;D

You know...you're both right. :) Karen is right in assuming Black Sabbath is the other "odd one out", and Paul is right in thinking Ozzy Osbourne has had "a hit or two" in The Netherlands. In fact, it is exactly that: two hits as a solo artist. "No More Tears" hit #16 in 1992, and "Dreamer" hit #19 in 2003.

Okay, I'm really pulling out the stops now...mind you, the clues helped!  ;)

#4. The title is 'Law Of The Land' (which charted here in a version by The Temptations)
(Undisputed Truth are also a OHW in Britain, with yet another song! 'You + Me = Love')

#9. One I should have got? Mmm...I suppose I should have!
'It Takes Two To Tango' - Richard Myhill

#37. Title is 'A Little Bit Further Away'...a (very minor) OHW here too

#39. Another one I should have got? No pressure on me here!  :D
I don't actually recall listening to this one, but the title is 'The Motive (Living Without You)'

Well, why didn't you say so in the first place?!?  ;D :D ;)

All answers are spot-on, Paul. :)

Good to know Kokomo made the UK charts (if only by the skin of their teeth). I've always found it an enjoyable tune, and it actually surprised me to find out it wasn't a hit elsewhere.

Madness were no OHW in The Netherlands (they hit Top 40 seven times), so it's not them. :( Nice try, though. :)

The remaining ones are too obscure, obviously....

07. The artist is Peter Brown, but what's the song?
        That's Love In Our Hearts

08. Not a lot to go on for this artist/song...It hit #6 in US Club Play Charts. Band name is comprised of a last name and an appendix, very much like Shirley & Co.
Rock Your World (Joho Joho) - Weeks & Co(mpany)

13. An obscure UK duo (Simon Fellowes and Simon Gilham) with an unknown song, but I put it in anyway! ;D It peaked at #77 in UK. Their song "Get Out Of London" was featured in the Olsen twins movie "Winning London".
        Steamhammer Sam - Intaferon

14. The singer (real name: John Colbert) was the lead singer of the Soul Children before starting a solo career.
        That's J. Blackfoot

18. Singer's real name is Eric Goulden. He was born in Newhaven, UK. Other songs that you might know: "Whole Wide World" (covered by quite a few artists), and "Broken Doll" (his biggest chart success, although even that one didn't reach UK Top 40).
Hit 'n' Miss Judy - Wreckless Eric

21. A song by David Hasselhoff.
        That's Looking For Freedom

24. This song by Climax Blues Band hit #47 in US.
        That's Gotta Have More Love

25. Another obscure duo (Murray Monro and John Molloy). Not very productive. They also released a song called "Into Trouble With The Noise Of Art".
        The duo is called Mainframe

30. Nobody recognize this one? It peaked at #41 in US. The singer had already had a hit in 1955 with "Those Lonely Lonely Nights" before changing his style to the more downright dirty. You might know "Superman Hero".
A Real Mother For Ya - Johnny "Guitar" Watson

32. German trio, claiming to originate from the former Soviet Union. Both the band name and the song title are clues in that direction.
        Made In Russia - C.C.C.P.

34. Obscure, I admit...but you never know! It's an American foursome (Auvil Gilchrist, Daniel Terry, Roland Nembhard and Don Howard) with a song about something that we are all in dire need of (not love or money).
        Time - Stone

35. A OHW in UK, too, peaking over there at #7 in 1993. It's an Italian duo. The song contains a synth riff sample of Simple Minds'  "New Gold Dream".
        Open Your Mind - Usura

42. A song by Alex Harvey.
That's To Make My Life Beautiful

43. A not very famous Irish septet, lead by Leslie Dowdall. Their single "Take My Hand" was co-written by Sinéad O'Connor. Other songs include "All I Wanted" and "Don't Fear Me Now".
Seven Into The Sea - In Tua Nua

45. Singer's real name is Paul Goodchild. He had some minor success in US clubs, with "Come With Me" and "One More Shott".
Can't Stop Running - Space Monkey

I'll see if I can make the next quiz a little easier.

I can't say as I know any of those songs :(
I know OF the group Intaferon though.  One of the members Simon F had somewhat of a popular video hit in Canada with a song called "I Want You Back" in 1986

I knew beforehand that a few would possibly be left unanswered, but you never know...Paul and/or Patrick (Midas) might just come up with a few obscure ones. Sadly, that didn't happen this time. :\'(

Of course, David Hasselhoff is a misunderstood genius in his own country (when it comes to his singing career)...  :D ;D ;)

It is odd how Hasselhoff has never had a hit song in the US (or Canada).  Both Knight Rider and Baywatch were huge, and I believe he also sang a few songs for the Baywatch soundtrack

I believe that David Hasselhoff did pantomime last Christmas in the UK

I've heard of Wreckless Eric but can't recall any of his music.  Probably my eldest brother had some of his stuff
