Subject: My Very First Audio Quiz...! (WRAPPED UP - by me of course...)
Written By: FaultyDog on 04/22/06 at 2:36 am
Yes folks, I've jumped on the bandwagon and created my very first
1960s, 1970s and 1980s AUDIO QUIZ!
I had much fun creating this thing, although I don't think I deserve full credit. Most of these songs (44 to be exact) were already used by one of my former colleagues in a quiz he made some 20 years ago (on a cassette tape). I only saved the answers to his quiz, so I may have used different clippings for the questions. Don't feel embarrassed if you don't know the songs - I only knew 18.5 out of those 44 (but that was back then... ::)).
This being said, I think it's time for you to have a go.
Have fun, and please no cheating.
Scores so far:
7.0 whistledog
6.5 jaytee
6.0 Windbreaker05
4.0 loki 13 / mooster / Paul
2.0 Gaylon
1.5 Badfingerfan
1.0 darkbreed / Sister Morphine
0.5 maddog / Trimac20
HINTS! HINTS! HINTS!
03. British new wave band (John Watts, Steve Skolnick, Steve Liddle and David Graham).
05. This was the only (Dutch and UK) Top 40 entry for this band of three in 1969. One of the members was Adrian Gurvitz.
09. As you might have guessed, this is a piece of classical music brought to you by Jethro Tull.
18. Maybe when he's old and wise he will know what becomes of the broken hearted.
25. Three members of the Shadows.
33. Artist identified as Roxy Music. They urge you on performing a certain kind of new dance.
42. UK band, lead singer Gary Wright. They never had a UK Top 40 hit, but this song reached #13 in Dutch Top 40.
44. OK, so this is the one I put in for good measure (to make it 15 songs from each decade). This may have charted only in The Netherlands and Germany, I'm not sure. The title is the German (and Dutch) word for "Horny".

It's not inconvenient for me, but I know I, when I first saw this quiz, clicked the ones that didn't already have answers under them first so I could get my reply in, so it might be inconvenient for people who come in to take the quiz now... not sure if that makes sense? It doesn't matter what the clip names are (sometimes I just give mine all the same name ;)) but the way the links and the answers match up is kinda important. Sorry if I'm not explaining this well and I don't mean to make it sound like this is a major problem... I stand by my first comment of "great quiz!"

In my party years as a rebllious teen, I remember my older friends playing good harmonica blues music and John mayall was one of the best and I recognized it immediately. I wish I knew some of the others. ??? also to add/modify my post, i don't know much Zappa, maybe the titles to 2 songs, and I will throw in a guess for#7 Mud Shark by Frank Zappa if that is indeed a song title of his. A good guess, but not the right answer. Does it help when I tell you this is where the "yowsa yowsa yowsa" comes from...? ???
As for the others that are left: I'm surprised nobody has recognized #20 yet. It was a big hit in UK (#2 in 1982) and The Netherlands (#1) and I'm sure it was just as big elsewhere in the world too.

There's no Eric Clapton in that song. The artists are better known for being in a guitar band that did accompaniments (with a UK singer) and some very famous instrumental tunes.

The EP 'Love Over Gold' that it appears on was a Platinum seller here in Canada in 1982. Some trivia: In the US, it was not popular at all, but eventually it dod sell gold in 1986 after the popularity of the 'Brothers in Arms' album

Hi Henk
The Pink Floyd song at #1 is "Arnold Layne" (and his strange hobby was collecting clothes ;)).

07. "Yowsa! Yowsa! Yowsa!"
Dancin' Fool
09. As you might have guessed, this is a piece of classical music brought to you by a band named after the inventor of the sowing machine.
Jethro Tull?
18. Maybe when he's old and wise he will know what becomes of the broken hearted.
Jimmy Ruffin?

The first two (halves) are correct, but it's not Jimmy Ruffin I'm looking for.

Henk, when I try to hear the audio, I get a page that says this. :(

Strange... the "Music" folder is set to public, so there shouldn't be any problem. :-\\
Could it be you're using a non-private computer (at work, in school, in a library)...? ??? Those are most likely set to deny you access to this kind of sites. There's nothing I can do about that, I'm afraid...

Time's up, and with no more replies to check here's the final answers:
03. British new wave band (John Watts, Steve Skolnick, Steve Liddle and David Graham).
Marliese - Fischer Z
05. This was the only (Dutch and UK) Top 40 entry for this band of three in 1969. One of the members was Adrian Gurvitz.
Race With The Devil - Gun
09. As you might have guessed, this is a piece of classical music brought to you by Jethro Tull.
Bourree - Jethro Tull
18. Maybe when he's old and wise he will know what becomes of the broken hearted.
I Don't Believe In Miracles - Colin Blunstone
25. Three members of the Shadows.
Faithfull - Marvin, Welch & Farrar
33. Artist identified as Roxy Music. They urge you on performing a certain kind of new dance.
Do The Strand - Roxy Music
42. UK band, lead singer Gary Wright. They never had a UK Top 40 hit, but this song reached #13 in Dutch Top 40.
That Was Only Yesterday - Spooky Tooth
44. OK, so this is the one I put in for good measure (to make it 15 songs from each decade). This may have charted only in The Netherlands and Germany, I'm not sure. The title is the German (and Dutch) word for "Horny".
Geil - Bruce & Bongo (and just for the record: it's not about sex)
If it's any consolation: when I was asked to answer these questions in the mid 1980s, I had no answer to #5, 9, 18, 25, 33 and 42 too. ;)
