Subject: ANZAC DAY QUIZ (RIP)
Written By: jaytee on 04/24/05 at 7:13 am
Tomorrow (25 April) Australians and New Zealanders commemorate Anzac Day. We remember those lost and who have fought for our countries. This is our ode:

Very touching piece of commemoration, Janine...
Strangely, we do not have a day for our 'vets'...a couple of minutes silence on Armistice Sunday is all we seem to be able to do these days...
#11. 'The Universal Soldier' - originally a Buffy St. Marie song, it's more commonly associated with Donovan...

#33. 'Give Peace A Chance' (if only...) - Plastic Ono Band

Sad to say I haven't, although I've seen plenty of doco's and footage from around the time of Vietnam and how the protest songs tied in...
'Fixing To Die' is very much a product of that time and some say that is doesn't stand up much these days...no denying that message, tho'...
Obviously I need glasses, as I'm allowed another answer...try this...
#34. 'Turn Turn Turn (To Everything There Is A Season)' - Pete Seeger ripping bits out of the Bible, but best-known in a version by The Byrds...

If you get the opportunity to see it, do. I suppose the Vietnam songs really get to me because so many of my brother's friends went. Sadly, my brother was killed in an accident before he got called up :\'(
And I've got to say I was shocked when you only answered 3!! Should have known you thought the limit was 3 ;)
#34 is correct. Pete Seeger did add a few bits and bobs to that bible reading!! That song's on my funeral playlist!!

Hi Janine - excellent quiz as always. I spotted a couple that I was surprised haven't already been nabbed:
#3 Life During Wartime - Talking Heads
#10 War - Edwin Starr
I saw the NZ Prime Minister speaking from Gallipoli on the BBC news last night. I have to admit I get personally affected by remembrance services, going back to my childhood when my Dad used to take us to the annual Remembrance Day service
(over here it's 11th November). My Dad was in the Navy during WWII, he was a radar officer on aircraft carriers in the Pacific.
He said little about his experiences but always made sure me & my brother & sister understood the debt we owed to those
who fought and died.
The local chapter of the Burma Star Association (veterans of the army campaign in SE Asia) always used to attend the service,
and the poem you quoted was always read out at the end as the standard bearer lowered his flag. It affects me every time I hear it, perhaps more so since my Dad died a couple of years ago. So now I go to the service each year with my own children.

Hello Graham - the two you answered are correct. :)
I watched the Dawn Service live from Gallipoli today.  The older I'm getting the more it affects me ???  Like you, after I lost my Dad who was in the jungles of New Guinea during WWII, it really chokes me up when I hear the Last Post and The Ode.  Dad never claimed his medals (don't know why).  He never spoke of any of his experiences except the odd comment here and there.  Anyway my kids want me to write to Canberra and claim his medals which I'm going to do in the next month or so.  My Mum was also in the army - different things can still upset her when they're mentioned.  I can't imagine what their lives were like ???

Not quite, it aired on one of the two American public television stations (viewer supported by pledges) that I pick up on cable here in Montreal. Sadly, it was back in the late 80s and I only saw a handful of episodes so I don't remember the oranges.
I liked Molly Ringwald in "Pretty In Pink" - I had a crush on Andrew McCarthy (he reminded me so much of my boyfriend I had at highschool).
"Pretty in Pink" was good and I liked the song as well. I remember the opening scene with her putting on a pair of flowery pants, my friend, who also liked Molly Ringwald, leaned over in the dark theatre and whispered, "I'd love to weed that garden." :o

22. American Dream Denial - System of a Down
(Psst, Holicman, the artist your are looking for sings with a group with whom Charlie Brown could relate.)
That's the one.
Good clue for Holicman regarding artist .... but do either of you know the song? ;) :D

Sure, it calls for the abolition of one of the things that we were most afraid of in the 80s.
(Another clue because I want Holicman or Gis to get this one.)

It's been a day now, so I'll go for it. The remaining song is Ban the Bomb by Ian Dury (fighting the urge to type Drury) and the Blockheads.

BTW, jaytee, before you close this up permanently, the artist for #14 is Sgt. Barry Sadler.
