Subject: Maddog's Round The World Quiz - Limit Off & Clues

Written By: maddog on 02/16/05 at 9:24 am

I guess this theme has been used before but here's my take on a lyrics quiz taken from songs with a country (or nationality) in their title.
For example, the song title might contain "Korea" or "Korean" (actually I couldn't think of any songs about Korea).

Limit 3 for now.

1. And the day was just beginning
Paul - Lost In France - Bonnie Tyler

2. Sleep for a while and speak no words
Paul - Australia - Manic Street Preachers

3. I'll give you a man who wants to rule the world
nally - China Girl - David Bowie

4. I often kiss you when there's no one else around
Doc Brown - Turning Japanese - The Vapors

5. Can't you hear the parade
Paul - Little Italy - Stephen Bishop

6. They like the punk and the metal band
Ceramics Fanatic - Walk Like An Egyptian -The Bangles

7. All my best things are in hock
AchtungBaby / ?? - Chinese Rocks - ??
Clue - probably the best known song by a band containing ex-New York Dolls

8. So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye?
CatWomanofV - Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

9. They say immigrants steal the hubcaps of the respected gentlemen
jaytee / Paul - Something About England - The Clash

10. Now he’s a razor in the wind
Paul - Spanish Stroll - Mink DeVille

11  She is awakened by the screams of rockets flying from nearby
Indy Gent- The Lebanon - Human League

12. They come from the cities and they come from the smaller towns
Gaylon - R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A. - John Mellenkamp

13.  Now I'm asking all of you - Help us save some lives
Gaylon - Bangladesh - George Harrison

14. So you been to school for a year or two and you know you've seen it all
Alcoholica - Holiday In Cambodia - The Dead Kennedys

15. So far from Japan, quite a long way from Cairo, lots of miles from Vietnam
AchtungBaby - Finland - Monty Python

16. How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer's deadly toy?
Ceramics Fanatic - Russians - Sting

17. I don't want to be a bus driver all my life
Paul - Barbados - Typically Tropical

18. At sixes and sevens with you
CatWomanofV - Don't Cry For Me Argentina - Evita soundtrack - Julie Covington, Madonna and others

19. Come and keep your comrade warm
Gaylon - Back In The USSR - The Beatles

20. Ata whakarongona
jaytee - God Defend New Zealand - national anthem of New Zealand

8. Bohemian Rhapsody-Queen
18. Don't cry for me Argentina (from Evita)-originally done by Patti LaPone but I am going to put Madonna (and I think Shirley Bassey also did a version of it, too).

Cat

Both correct Cat, I'll accept any version of Don't Cry For me Argentina - you're right there have been many versions.
Here in the UK, Julie Covington had a big hit with the song - 1977 I think. She's a great singer. Better than Madonna IMHO ;).

BTW, before anyone steps in, I realise that strictly speaking, Bohemia is not a country - I think it's a region of Romania now?
But I think it WAS a country sometime in the middle ages. Anyway, it's my quiz so there!

Hi Graham...good to see you back on the quizzes...

My three ports of call...

#1. 'Lost In France' - Bonnie Tyler

#10. The very excellent 'Spanish Stroll' - Mink Deville

#17. 'Barbados' - Typically Tropical (before them Vengaboys trashed it...!)

Hiya maddog!

#3: "China Girl" by David Bowie.

Correct nally!
Nice highlighting on the country name -  I thought about doing the same thing in the answers myself but then I ....err...couldn't be bothered  ::)!

Right, Doc!
No points on offer for anyone pointing out what the song is about (yes I think we all know already).

Hi Paul, all correct :)!
Whatever happened to Mink DeVille anyway? One great hit and then disappeared, as far as I could tell.

Hiya Graham

#20 has to be something Kiwi with a lyric like that - I keep thinking Split Enz/Crowded House but am drawing a blank :-\\

It is Kiwi Janine, although I was running out of inspiration at this point in compiling the quiz, so it's not a popular song in the normal sense.
You'll know this song if you've ever seen a Bledisloe Cup match  ;).

Well  then #20 must be the New Zealand national anthem!!  I think the only words I remember are "God bless New Zealand".  There was a bit of a uproar here last year because the Kiwi woman singing the Australian national anthem before one of the netball tests forgot the words. ::)

Strictly speaking, Alcoholica gets this by virtue of posting the answer first BUT I'm tempted to give it to Taoist because of Alcoholica's incorrect use of the apostrophe, a pet peeve of mine  >:( >:( >:(. Come on Alcoholica, this is a PLURAL not a POSSESSIVE!!!

Only kidding Alcoholica, you get the credit on condition that you promise never to do this to me again... ;)

It certainly is jaytee, it's actually called "God Defend New Zealand" and it always precedes what I believe is the greatest sight in World sport, that is the All Blacks performing the haka.
I have a soft spot for the All Blacks, and I'll tell you why. In this age of commercialism and the money men dominating everything, the All Blacks still refuse to put the sponsor's logo
on their revered black shirt. OK, there is an adidas logo but at least adidas MAKE the shirt. It's better than having some awful corporate logo like O2 or Vodafone across your national team's rugby shirt.

NO IT ISN'T!
Even the band will tell you it's not about that. A guy is stuck working at the office so much that he can't get out to see his girl, or even hit the bars for a good time. Just like all those foolish rat-racers in Tokyo. That's what it means, hence the line:
No sex no drugs no wine no women no fun no sin no YOU, no wonder it's dark! But with what most people think, no wonder they were a one-hit wonder!

There, I've said my piece, and now I'm trying to figure the rest of these out. This quiz is tough!

Doc

Love this subject.. i agree 100% this is why Real Madrid piss me off so much. This is going somewhere. They have sponsorship right and yet the spanish government still bails them out when they need cash.. barcelona will be forced to put sponsorship on there shirts because the Spanish government is making things difficult for them (catalan thing). Thus a great tradition will be gone.

The haka certainly is a spectacle.  Not so much a spectacle (more a debacle) when you see groups of pi$$ed men attempting it!

You're allowed to like the Allblacks but being an Aussie ... it's a love/hate relationship ... we love to hate 'em ;)

Got to agree with you, however, about the jerseys.  The Wallabies do look like walking advertisements :(

It is by The Clash, Janine, and it is a song containing "England" in the title but it's not that one....it's a song on the album "Sandinista!".

I was in the same boat as Janine on this, but with the BIG hint above I've worked out it's 'Something About England'...

Must try and brush up on my Clash at some point...!

#2. 'Australia' - Manic Street Preachers

#15 is correct, AchtungBaby, #7 is almost correct - the song is called "Chinese Rocks". The Ramones did cover it, I'll leave it open for the original artist (by the band formed by some former members of The New York Dolls).

Going by my (very) limited knowledge of New York geography, I'll throw caution to the wind and say that the title of #5. is 'Little Italy'...

But I've no idea if there's a song by that name, let alone who sings it...!!

Little Italy is correct Paul, the singer is a US singer/songwriter that I know you know, you and CF were going on and on (wink) about him in another thread recently....

Must be Stephen Bishop - truth be told, I've not heard this, so I'll be investigating further...
