Subject: Some ideas, please

Written By: philbo on 11/17/04 at 7:38 am

This isn't a quiz for you guys... I'm putting together a quiz in which we usually have a music round, and my wife suggested that we play cover versions of famous songs and ask who originally released the song.  So I though I'd come here for some ideas ;)

Suggestions so far have been:
Britney's cover of I Love Rock n Roll (yes, I know...)
Madonna's American Pie (OK, so it gets worse)
...they don't *have* to be execrable remakes, just something a little different to the original.

Any thoughts?

Not sure if these would fit the bill, phil - they may be a trifle obscure, but here goes...

'Substitute' by Clout (not the Who song), was originally released by The Righteous Brothers

'Mickey' by Toni Basil was originally released (under a slightly different title - 'Kitty') by Racey

'Baby Can I Hold You' by Boy-Bland Boyzone was originally released by Tracy Chapman

...and 'I Love Rock And Roll' is a cover of a cover - that was originally done by long-forgotten glam group The Arrows in 1975...

The Gary Jules version of Mad World (tears for fears)

William Shatner's version of Pulp's Common People

Boyzone (?) Love me for a reason (originally the Osmonds)

The Tide is High by Sugababes (I think)

Hold on.. just to go off topic slightly.. do the club singer (like a chaz & Dave style) quiz.. do a song in the style of a club singer and then everyone has to guess what song it was.

Did you used to watch Shooting Stars with Reeves and Mortimer?  Amazingly I sometimes got the pub singer round right.  The trick is to listen with your eyes closed.  Works for the 'guess the intro' round on Never mind the bollocks Buzzcocks

The lounge room version of Wonderwall.

Some great ideas, folks :D - and thanks for the nod about The Arrows doing the original (I might give a bonus point for knowing that ;))

That would be kind of fun, but I'm not sure I've got time before Saturday...

Come to think of it, I think do have an I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue CD with Barry and Graham singing "Yesterday" in the style of Chas and Dave...

And I'll have to see if I can find Rolf Harris' "Stairway to Heaven"

You don't even need the Cd's mate.. do it yourself.. it's even better

Go OTT and start making like wookie noises and then claim it was something incredibly poignant and moving..

Emotion, originally sung by Samantha Sang, covered by Destiny's Child
Love Don't Live Here anymore, originally by Rose Royce, covered by Madonna

Ah! Shooting Stars...in actual fact, me and my cronies would sometimes re-create the 'club style' singer quiz when it got to a certain stage in drinking, which guaranteed no-one in the pub would come anywhere near us...!!

Which reminds me, we're all out on Saturday...God help the good folk of Chatham...!

Best of luck with the quiz, phil...

Hope you win! ;)

Oh, I'll get all the answers right...

...I should, anyway: I'm setting the questions ;)

I like the idea of Kylie's Locomotion, too.  I've also got "My Way" by the Sex Pistols... The aim is ½ point each for whoever's doing the cover version and who did the original.

Still can't find Rolf Harris's "Stairway to Heaven", but I think I may include Weird Al Yankovic's "Bohemian Polka"

Scary thought...
Picture yourself on the bridge on the Enterprize
With Lt. Uhura, and Scotty and Spock
Somebody beams up from the planet's surface
The man with the ginormous ..ego

Aargh!

Still can't find Rolf Harris's "Stairway to Heaven"

Here you go Philbo. It's about halfway down the page. ;)

You'll find some other 'interesting' covers there too. :)

Brilliant, mandamoo - many thanks indeed.  And my, that is a weird set of mp3s - did you go looking on my behalf, or did you already know about Ms Winchell's, er, "interesting" website?

No worries Philbo, you're most welcome  ;)

I actually found a sample of it a week or so ago and after reading here that you were looking for it, I thought I'd try my luck in finding the full version. Funny the things you stumble across ! :)

Thanks - the quiz was on Saturday, so it's gone now.  For the record, the ones I ended up using were:

"Unchained Melody" as sung by Gareth Gates
"My Way" as sung by Sid Vicious
"Stairway to Heaven" - Rolf Harris
"A Hard Days Night"- Peter Sellers
"I Love Rock 'n' Roll" - Britney "why is there no vomit smiley" Spears
"Baker Street" - Foo Fighters
"Bohemian Rhapsody" - the Weird Al "Bohemian Polka" version
"You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" - John Otway
"Knocking on Heaven's Door" - GNR
and last and most disturbing:
"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" - William Shatner

Interestingly enough, the only one that wasn't got was the Foo Fighters; and I got criticised for calling John Otway "local" - he comes from Aylesbury, about 15 miles down the road.

Did he used to have a partner Barrett?  I could never tell if it was Otway and Barrett or Ottoway and Barrett when my brothers told me their name.  Their favourite was the live version of 'Headbutt' (assuming it's the same guy)

Yes, that's the chap: and "Head butts" was the favourite of my class at school.  My children find it kind of funny, too :)
