Alrighty maddog...
#4. 'Road To Nowhere' - Talking Heads
#5. Almost the name of the quiz...'Trains And Boats And Planes' - either Burt Bacharach, Billy J Kramer...and I suppose Dionne must've done a version somewhere...

Probably no ugly bands out of this lot...will keep an eye out...

#12 is correct Gaylon, I don't know the song you've answered at #16 but it's not the one I had in mind.

Hi maddog :)
I am not sure if this is the answer you are looking for
#13 Mustang Sally- Wilson Pickett (also Buddy Guy does a good version of this song)
If this is correct...I believe that the lyrics are You're gonna be wipin' your weepin' eyes
#7 Pink Cadillac-Bruce Springsteen

Aha! I may have spotted who the 'ugly band' is...
But I'm up to my limit at any rate...so someone else may be able to worm it out...

Both correct Pandora, and yes, I believe you're right about those lyrics, it makes a lot more sense that way. I'll change it in the main quiz.

1. Elvis Presley - Mystery Train
17. The Clash - Train in Vain
Both correct Kenny :). I thought it would be you or Billy Florio who got #17 - where is Billy anyway?
And I've never really understood why #17 has that song title, the lyrics don't seem to go with the title.

Keep your powder dry for when the limit comes off Paul, I suspect this one may be familiar to Brits only...

And then my theory got completely blown out of the water soon after!
I thought it may have been 'The Commitments' (who also performed 'Mustang Sally' - not exactly oil paintings), but...
...it may be either of these...
#11. The excellent '747 (Strangers In The Night)' - Saxon
#15. 'Trans-Europe Express' - (by that bundle of fun) Kraftwerk
...close call, but I'll guess 'Saxon' get the ugly stick award ('guess' being the right word, as I've not seen many pics of 'em...perhaps that's why...)

LOL ;D!
I loved "The Commitments", and yes, the lead singer was certainly no pinup, but some of the girls were very attractive ;).
#11 and #15 are both correct. The earnest Brit rockers Saxon from the NWOBHM era were the ones I had in mind for the "ugly" award.
They're still going strong according to a bit of google-research I just did, with lead singer Biff Byford (second from left below) the prime candidate for lead singer least likely to feature on the bedroom wall of teenage girls....

Cor! That's ^ put me right off me tea, has that...!!
Still no joy with the last, but now we have a clue or two, I should be able to pull something out...there was a Mute feature in a past issue of 'Record Collector' which should reveal all - I've just got to find the thing...!
But if anyone wants to jump in beforehand, please do...
Back soon...(hopefully!)

The last one (#14) seems like it might be "Warm Leatherette" by the Normal (a rather strange record).

Puff...puff...pant...gasp...found it...it's...
'Warm Leatheret...' - oh, nally's beaten me to it...extremely well done...
One of those songs I've heard of, but not actually heard (if you see what I mean...) - I think, but can't be altogether sure, that Grace Jones covered it...
As for the book that inspired it...sorry! Lost me again! It's okay for you educated Northern folks, maddog - but us Southern jessies can't read...!!

Correct nally :)!!
It's strange but I love it. It was a double A side with a song called "TVOD", a satire on society's obsession with television.
"I don't need no...
TV screen...
I just stick the aerial...
into my skin...
and let the signals flood into my veins"

The book/movie associated with #14 is "Crash".
Correct Indy (welcome back by the way!).
The author was J.G.Ballard. The book (and song) is about a group of people who, and there's no delicate way of putting this, have a fetish about having sex with car crash victims. It's (apparently) a metaphor for society's fixation with technology and was made into a film in the 90s starring Holly Hunter and James Spader. I have to say I've never read the book or seen the film!
The song was written and performed by Daniel Miller, an early electro-pop pioneer and the owner of Mute records, the label on which Depeche Mode and Yazoo had their early hits.
