Subject: Manchester Quiz - Done!

Written By: maddog167 on 03/31/04 at 00:57 a.m.

These lyrics are all taken from songs by artists who have an association with the city of Manchester, England, where I've lived for the last 18 years.

Some of the artists were born and bred here, others only passed through. Some of the songs are reasonably obscure and may be only recognisable to UK board members. I'd be particularly surprised if #1, #10 and #15 are known outside the UK, but you never know....

Artist and song title please, limit 4 for now.

1.      He looked like an extra from Yang Shang Po
Paul UK's mate, Paul - Kung Fu International - John Cooper Clarke

2.      I can't see much of a future unless we find out what's to blame
Lesley - Ever Fallen In Love With Someone (You Shouldn't Have Fallen In Love With)? - The Buzzcocks

3.      A pair of 45's made me open my eyes, my temperature started to rise
jaytee - Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress - The Hollies

4.      Strangled by the wishes of pater
Ceramics Fanatic - Holding Back The Years - Simply Red

5.      It's a shame these slugs ain't real
Paul UK - Rubber Bullets - 10cc

6.      Is it my imagination or have I finally found something worth living for?
Bobo - Cigarettes And Alcohol - Oasis

7.      Oh, my child, you’ll never know just what you mean to me
FussBudgetVanPelt - Jive Talkin' - Bee Gees

8.      Jesus was Batman? No, no, no - that was Bruce Wayne
early 90s hit for the follow on band from #16, song title was also a film starring Clint Eastwood & Donald Sutherland
Indy Gent - Kelly's Heroes - Black Grape

9.      Drawn by the undertow, My life is out of control
Lanie - Sit Down - James

10.      Bang your head on the wall

11.      And you go home and you cry and you want to die
Lanie - How Soon Is Now? - The Smiths

12.      The Marquis de Sade don't wear no boots like these

15.      All he sees is the back of chairs, in the mirror a lack of hairs
Lesley - Bingo Master's Breakout - The Fall

16.      Gonna stamp out your fire, he can change your desire
jaytee / Indy Gent - (He's Gonna) Step On (You Again) - Happy Mondays

17.      I've been standing in the rain just to get wet on purpose
Paul UK - Getting Away With It - Electronic

Hiya jaytee!

#3 is correct and #16 is the correct song. You've given the orginal artist though (John Kongos), who I don't think had any Manchester connection. The song was covered in the early 90s by a Manchester (well, Salford actually) group....

Morning Lesley :)

4 for 4, excellent! I thought #15 might be too obscure and  need a clue or two, so well done.

Maybe I'll have a stab at a Yorkshire quiz next if I can bring myself to make that mental leap across the Pennines ;).

Well, the girls are on fire this morning, that's another 2 down, including a typically joyful song to uplift the spirits from Morrissey at #11 (not!).

Hi maddog...

Was looking for a bit of Bernard Cribbins in here, but no luck...

Here's four...

#5. Rubber Bullets - 10cc (owners of Strawberry Studios up there, which is where Neil Sedaka recorded a lot of his 'comeback' material...)...leads me nicely to...

#19. Wedding Bells - Godley & Creme...50% of the above group, probably better known for their video production work...

#14. Blue Monday - New Order (still our best-selling 12-inch record)...and that brings me nicely to...

#17. Getting Away With It - Electronic (Bernie from New Order in the roll-call along with Johnny Marr & Neil Tennant 'mongst others...good song...)

My English teacher at school used to give 12 out of 10 marks for submitted homework that surpassed all expectations...so 12/10 for you here Paul!

And Bernard Cribbins, son of Oldham (I think) - how could I have forgotten him!?

The Gibb family resided for a short time in Manchester during the boys' childhood before taking the incomprehensible step of leaving this beautiful city and moving on to live in the Isle of Man, Australia, New York, Los Angeles and Miami.
What were they thinking of!?

Yes, I think it's mostly the tough ones that are left, except for this one (which I knew you'd get 'cos you've spotted exactly the same lyric in one of my quizzes a few weeks ago ;)!)

Hey there mandamoo :D - that's correct, thanks for reviving the quiz! Limit is now off if anyone else wants to finish it up, although I think I may have to add some hints for the remaining songs.

Can assist with half of the clear-up, maddog...

I showed this quiz to a fellow inmate co-worker last Friday, who almost immediately grabbed two...so they're his answers rather than mine (although I have heard of the artists)...

His name is Paul as well (which leads me to think that anyone blessed with this name is some kind of anorak...!)

Anyways...

#1. Kung-Fu International - John Cooper Clarke
...the man as quoted in your text - a 'punk poet' being the best way to describe him...I only have the 'Gimmix!' single...I'm sure I saw him doing a breakfast cereal commercial (of all things!)

#10. Heads Down No-Nonsense Mindless Boogie - Alberto Y Lost Trios Paranoias
...who he describes as 'an utter bunch of lunatics who must have played every known student union gig in their heyday' - done a thing called 'Snuff Rock' before this, as I remember...

And, come along...only a couple more for 'four-figure' status...!

Hiya Paul - both correct!
I recently bought John Cooper Clarke's "greatest hits" CD in a record shop sale, I've been playing it in the car and it was the inspiration for this quiz. JCC did indeed do the "Sugar Puffs" commercial in the 80s, dancing around with the Honey Monster, what was he thinking? (about the money, I guess  ::))

(Oh, and I just noticed you're right, Clarke does have an 'e' at the end...)

And yes, the Albertos were a comedy/punk/rock band of the late 70s, sort of Manchester's answer to The Tubes...this was their only hit single, a parody of Status Quo.
