Amazingly, all classics which should have done better...(in case anyone's interested, 'Fifty-Four' in the Chic song refers to the legendary Studio 54 disco in New York - closed 1980...)

And, of course, all correct...!

(Ahem! Not quite! Find out why a little later on, when Kenny puts us both to shame!)

Dead Or Alive's 'Spin' was one of the earliest collaborations of Messrs Stock, Aitken & Waterman - who became the scourge of the British record industry later in the 80's...mostly with Australian soap stars!

You're spot on with all five, Lanie...!

Hi jaytee - two thirds correct (#2 & #23), #27 is incorrect - it's a tad older than Rod's song, but just as well known...

Not only did 'Honey' make #2 in 1968, but almost seven years later when re-issued, it made #2 again! Proving that if we British aren't sentimental, we certainly are mad...!

Two-thirds there, maddog - #3 is not right (although there is a reference to 'seventeen' in SD's lyric) - to be fair, it's a bit of a vague-ish line, so I'll include the following line...it shouldn't be too difficult to work out from there...

Now there's an image I'm trying very hard to get rid of...!

Correct for owning up to 'Captan Beaky', maddog...I'll give karen all due credit for the 'inspiration'...

Correct again, Lesley with 'Racey'...(Okay, it was a terrible clue!) - a band who I know next to nothing about apart from they were the originators of a song called 'Kitty', which was re-hashed a couple of years later with a gender change (became 'Mickey'), and got thrown at Toni Basil who done rather well with it...

I'll let #6 fester for a while (i.e., can't think of any more clues!) - you never know, someone may resurrect it several years from now...!

Subject: Re: UK Top 40 Rundown...1 left & clued!

Written By: maddog167 on 03/03/04 at 11:44 a.m.

OK, down to #6...the only thing that your clue brings to mind, Paul, is Secret Affair with "Time For Action". However I can't remember any of the lyrics apart from "This is the time, the time for action (yeah)" so whether the stuff about turning women into heaving wrecks is in there I've no idea!

But wait....a divine flash of inspiration has hit me from who knows where ;)!

#6 - is it "I Am The Beat" by (The?) Look!?

Subject: Re: UK Top 40 Rundown...1 left & clued!

Written By: maddog167 on 03/04/04 at 08:51 a.m.

Just as an aside, your clue refers to the UK Mod revival of the late 70s / early 80s, which brings to mind my experiences of the Wigan Scooter Club descending on Southport (my home town) during August Bank Holiday, I guess it must have been 1980.

I was a heavy rock fan in my teens, or at least I had long greasy hair and an embroidered denim jacket. I used to frequent a nightclub / underage drinking den called the Midnight Lounge where AC/DC, The Scorpions, Rush, UFO, Led Zeppelin etc. was the playlist of choice. However I stood out a bit 'cos the embroidered band names on my jacket included The Clash and Talking Heads. Plus, I didn't have a motorbike!

When the mods came to town over that Bank Holiday weekend it was like a PG rated version of Quadrophenia. Lots of posturing and chasing around town between the invading Mods and local "rockers" with no actual violence, at least not that I saw. I remember being chased down the promenade by a group of large mods who desisted only when my mate put on his parka which had "The Who" embroidered on the back....ahh, happy days!

Subject: Re: UK Top 40 Rundown...1 left & clued!

Written By: Paul_UK on 03/04/04 at 03:00 p.m.

Memories indeed! It was a crazy ol' time, the start of that decade, with a myriad of 'styles' all jostling for acceptance - for example (and I'm going back to secondary school here!) we had kids who were either Mod revivalists, Ska freaks, the 'heavy rock' crowd and the most reviled of the lot...the Soul Boy!

I vividly remember one kid painting a whole slew of 'Two Tone' logos on his pristine leather jacket with Tipp-Ex...!

Once again, all posturing...I don't think any 'gang' warfare broke out...we still had the threat of the cane in them days!

And this divine inspiration's a wonderful thing...absolutely correct on #6!

Which brings it to a close...thanks everyone!
