Subject: 1980s British Electro-Pop Quiz - finished off
All these lyrics are taken from 1980s hits by British bands who at one time or other have used a synthesiser or drum machine....after glam rock and punk rock in the 1970s this was the next big cultural influence of my late teens and early 20s (and I'm proud of that?).
Limit 3 and no googling!

Hi Maddog!
Some of these look familiar but they're just not coming to mind.
I do, however, know this one for sure...
#8 is "I Ran (So Far Away)" by A Flock Of Seagulls. :)

Hi maddog...blimey! These take me back...!
#1. Echo & The Bunnymen - The Cutter (fantastic!)
#4. Messages - OMD
#10. Wishful Thinking - China Crisis
...admittedly, you've got me stumped with what #3's lyrics are about - but I can tell you the whole thing was originally recorded for the princely sum of two and a half quid...!

:o :o I think this is a first Paul - I'll refrain from triumphalism but I am also strangely disappointed to have stumped you at last! (although the fact that you know how much it cost to record indicates that you know the song and artist ;))

#5 Are Friends Electric - Tubeway Army
1978/ '79 from memory ! :D

BTW, #20 is from 1990 if that's throwing anyone off the scent...a World Cup year, hint hint ;)

18. In These Arms - Bon Jovi
(though I have no idea since when did they become British and electric)

Well, they're all easy if you know the answer, as they say ;)
I admit for some of the others I went for less well known hits but the artists are all pretty well known, with the possible exception of #17. Hints will follow if no-one gets any more.

I can't give you that one Rock Princess, although I'll take your word that these lyrics also appear in that song :)
The song I'm looking for featured the name of a famous American soul diva of the 1960s (still very much alive today)...
Subject: Re: 1980s British Electro-Pop Quiz
Based on that clue, I'll guess "Hey, Nineteen" by Steely Dan. (Just to prove that I'm not Googling on your quiz. ::) ;))

You have the right soul diva there Indy but once again Steely Dan don't actually qualify as British. I should have made it clear that the soul diva's name appears in the title of the song.

Correct Mordor! :)
This song featured on the soundtrack of the 80s movie "Pretty In Pink", which I caught the end of on cable TV the other night and which gave me the impetus to compile this quiz.

Hi karen
#16 is correct
#18 ...this is indeed the subtitle of the song (in brackets) but I can't really give it to you without the full title...just sing it through in your head and I'm sure it'll come to you :)

Correct Indy!
This gives me another chance to make my dubious claim to fame that I went to school with Marc Almond of Soft Cell, although he's a few years older than me. Also my dad and his mother were boyfriend & girlfriend in their teens....so, worryingly, in a parallel universe somewhere, I could be Marc Almond....

I believe #7 is "New Life" by Depeche Mode.

Limits orf? Right, what's left over?
#3. Being Boiled - Human League
Still haven't the foggiest what these lyrics are about! Browsing through 'em, I'll take an extremely wild stab at some kind of religious cult killings? Possibly no...
If anyone's not familiar with this song and wants a copy, beware - it's a very different 'League' to what you probably know and love...
#9. Pale Shelter - Tears For Fears
#19. Getting Away With It - Electronic

3 for 3 Paul, well done.
"Being Boiled" is apparently a protest song about the method by which raw silk is obtained from silkworm coccoons, which is by boiling them alive. "Sericulture" means just that. It's a thought provoking protest but not one you hear much about.

well as interest seems to be tailing off on this one karen, I'm giving it to you - the title was "Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin). Scritti Politti started out as a punk-indie band (with drum machine) before going "mainstream" in the mid 80s.
