Subject: One Hit Wonders of the 1970s - done!

Written By: maddog167 on 08/29/03 at 04:15 p.m.

All of these lyrics are taken from songs by artists who only ever had one chart entry in the UK charts, and they're all from the 1970s.

A quick bit of research showed me that most of these were also hits in the USA, although not necessarily one-hit wonders.

Some real old standards and lyric quiz regulars in here...limit 4.

Limit off, plus some further lyrics to those that haven't been guessed yet

Hi everyone - thanks for the answers, I'm a bit pressed for time this morning so apologies that I can't reply individually.

All the answers so far are correct, taking into account CF's correction on the artist for #21. Keep those answer's coming!

Well, the clue is in the lyric jaytee...in fact the word "neanderthal" appears in every single line of the song!

Also, everyone, we need the artist who sang #8, correctly identified by jaytee as "Beach Baby".

I used to love that song...

Both correct Indy :).

I believe that #3 is a rare example of a one-hit wonder occurring on both sides of the Atlantic but with 2 different artists for the same song. In the UK, this song was the only ever chart entry for the Hotshots.

For all I know, the Hotshots and the Royal Guardsmen could be one and the same group, just some peculiar UK law may have prevented them using the name "Royal Guardsmen" - does anyone know the story behind this?

Both different groups, maddog - The Royal Guardsmen (US group) were the first on the scene with the song in early 1967 (which charted on both sides of the pond) - the long-forgotten Hotshots (UK group) charted with the cover over here in summer 1973...rather strangely, my Hotshots copy appears on a "Greatest Hits Of Reggae" compilation...reggae being the one thing I wouldn't describe this version as...

And whilst I've got my anorak on...

#1. Gimme Dat Ding - The Pipkins (ouch!)
#5. Hey There Lonely Girl - Eddie Holman
#11. Uptown Top Ranking - Althia & Donna (and 'ting!)

You're correct Mordor!

The even more worrying thing is that my Guinness Book of Hit Singles lists this as "Disco Duck Part One"! As if someone (presumably Rick Dees) thought it was good enough to carry on in the studio and lay down Part Two as well. Possibly even parts 3, 4 and 5 for all I know. Doesn't really bear thinking about for too long....

Be in misery no more, jaytee...

The song is 'Neanderthal Man' (so you were almost right! - maddog, give jaytee at least half!) by a Manc trio known as Hotlegs...after this hit they added a fourth member (noted songwriter Graham Gouldman) and achieved further, and this time sustained, success as 10CC...
